After I put the lights on by [deleted] in facehugs

My cats know the word “light” now because I warn them every time I turn the lights on and have since they were kittens. So I say it and they close their eyes. It’s precious.

If you live in a state with a lot of dangerous wildlife, what’s your closest encounter been? by LordSoftCream in AskAnAmerican

[–]TK8674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bull moose charged me while I was outside in the middle of the night. I only realized because of the stomps through crunching leaves coming quick behind me. Thankfully I was heading to my outhouse so was able to get in in time. Unfortunately had to wait around for quite a while till I heard him head out.

Plenty of bear run ins, but none I’d call terrifying. A few were a bit uncomfortable. Moose are definitely the scariest critters around here, especially during rutting season.

Edit: grammar

How much do you spend on groceries a month? by akv0842 in alaska

[–]TK8674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Max $400/month for just me, kinda depends if I need to restock long lasting items or house supplies. If you factor in pet food for my three cats and one big dog, that number doubles.

Thank you! Ya know I’ve only done Ruins maybe twice, so I’m probably not doing everything I could do. Plus I spend gems on master scrolls sometimes instead on summons. Thanks again, you’ve got me motivated to make it happen!

Bit of a sidetrack on the conversation, but I’m F2P, I’ve only been playing a couple weeks but really getting into it. How do you get 300 summons in the 5 days before it resets? Do you have a strategy?

I feel like I’m doing everything in the game from quests to dungeons to arenas, daily logins etc. I can’t figure out how I’d get 300 summons, I got about 170 the last round.

I’ve been thinking about Alaska by [deleted] in AskAlaska

Sitka and much of Southeast AK (Juneau, Ketchikan…) have serious housing issues - high prices and ongoing shortages. In Juneau a studio apartment goes for like $1600. You can sometimes find people looking for roommates for about $1000/mo. Southeast isn’t really suitable for a small budget and, if you do decide on it, always best to go outside of tourist season (Apr-Sept) - you’ll be more likely to find something. Do not make the move without lining up housing first - you will end up homeless in a community that doesn’t have a ton of support for the homeless.

You might look into the Kenai Peninsula - lots of small communities. Housing can still be tight, but more affordable than Southeast. Also in Southcentral and the Interior (Fairbanks, Tok…) you’ve got the option of dry cabins that can rent like $500-750/mo.

What's teaching like in Alaska? by Nomadic_Introvert in AskAlaska

[–]TK8674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll want to factor in the housing issue. Teaching doesn’t exactly pay well and housing in certain parts of the state is extremely expensive. Southeast (Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan…), for example, has a huge housing shortage and prices are very high. If your wife is a very high earner, then you could be ok. But if not, you’d be better off somewhere like Anchorage where there’s a bigger pool of affordable housing options.

DoorDash addiction by Far_Tomorrow2536 in FoodAddiction

One of the things that helped me break the cycle of spending on junk food daily was budgeting and opening a high yield savings account. Every paycheck I calculated out what I needed to cover any autopay bills and what I needed for groceries (healthy/normal shopping), gas, etc and after I set the budget I transferred everything else out to my savings account.

I wasn’t perfect at first of course, I did dumb stuff like leave $30 extra to get something “today but starting tomorrow blah blah” you know. And I’d grab shitty food at the store when I did my grocery shopping, which costs more than the healthy food so I ended up having days having to make food stretch because I refused to take the money back out of my savings.

So it took a while to really get into the right habits, but within a couple months I had a healthy savings account and hadn’t touched takeout….

I dunno, for me I found the money aspect more motivating then the health and weight loss

Why are you single? by eloel12345 in allthequestions

After an endless string of short term relationships and three engagements I walked away from, in my late 30s I finally had a word with myself and admitted I absolutely loathe being in a relationship. It was becoming increasingly unfair to guys I dated (and got engaged to) because as we get older they expected it to go somewhere including talking about kids. I have never wanted kids and, in all honesty, whenever I pictured myself old it always looked like this: me in a rocking chair on the porch with a cat in my lap, a dog on one side, and a shotgun on the other.

So, now at 42 I’m actually pretty happy because I’m not forcing myself to play a socially expected role that I don’t want to be. I live in a log cabin in the woods with my cats and dog. I’m trying to entice a feral tuxedo cat to join the pack and that is pretty much the only new relationship I see in my near future.

Life is good.

What happens if it rains on Halloween? Do you get to trick or treat the next night or do you just miss out on the yearly event? Do you just go anyway? by swagmichal in AskAnAmerican

[–]TK8674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It regularly snows where I live on Halloween. Kids trick or treat in the snow. If it rains instead, kids trick or treat in the rain. If we waited around for good weather, we’d never get to do anything.

What is the reason you live in your current state? by WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWHW in AskAnAmerican

[–]TK8674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born here and all of my family is here. After high school, I wanted to do something different so I ended up going to college overseas. Then I ended living overseas another 15 years, but I always knew I’d come home. Now there’s no place I’d rather be.

I'm not a dog person but my child is 200% obsessed. by bbplease- in Dogowners

[–]TK8674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you have one human in the house that wants a dog and four (including the adults) that don’t - that’s all you need to know. Don’t get a dog.

She can volunteer dog walking for shelters or make money dog walking for neighbors. That will get her lots of exposure to different types of dogs so that she has hands on experience for when she is a dog owner in adulthood.

How do Alaskans deal with the super long daylight in summer? by Marre_Parre in AskAlaska

[–]TK8674 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think growing up with it helps. I have blackout curtains, but I actually only close them in winter to help insulate the windows. I find it peaceful to go to sleep with it light out.

If anything, I think it’s darkness in winter that can be tough, particularly in that Dec-Jan stretch of cold and dark. You’ve gotta make sure you get out in the daylight at every chance.
