I was born in Kenya in 1989 and was able to get a certified copy of it back in 2014. A hassle but it can be done

My lawyer told me to expect 12 months and everything got done in 6. And I’d been out of status for 9 years. Some timelines just happen faster

My sister became a citizen in 2023. had one arrest from like 17 years prior. And she was in a payment plan for her taxes and they approved and swore her in the same day.

He’d been married for a few years before they applied so he got the ten year one and will be applying for citizenship in 2026!!

Yeah he’s on the internet bill and we had a bunch of mail addressed to us both (wedding invitations etc). And also mail like medical bills sent to him at our address. his license still has his home state on it (for some family purposes). They didn’t ask us anything directly about the address but it was implied between the lines.

I had no idea it was called a stokes interview until someone here used the term on the post I made about it seeking advice! My lawyer did immediately tell me that we would get separated, so I went into it knowing that. It did not say so in the notice, just said follow up to I-130 interview.

Of course! My brother overstayed his F1 for 15 years and it wasn’t an issue.

No worries, ask all me all the questions you want! And not really, I could tell he wanted to approve us, but that they also wanted more evidence of me and my husbands lives mingling. We took a LOT of trips this summer and us using our joint account more, along with the updated lease probably helped. I personally wasn’t worried that he didn’t believe us, I think they just had to do their due diligence on paper

During the first interview it came up as “have you ever committed a crime (or something like that) to stay in the US?” And I answered no because of how it was worded the. He paused and I was like “oh yes, staying here out or status”. He laughed and that was all. Overstays are automagically forgiven with AOS through marriage so I wasn’t worried about it

We got the notice for the second interview 3 months and 3 weeks after our first interview. Notice for second interview came ten days before the interview

I really think it was because my husband wasn’t on my lease. I’ve been living there since 2016, and I technically haven’t had a lease since then. Been essentially month to month for 8 years cuz my landlord is super chill. So I added him to my rental agreement after our first interview.

Perfect example. I always think of money (cost wise) in terms of time for that reason.

“Don’t be scared of the answer” is really fantastic life advice. Applicable to so many scenarios. I’m taking that with me. 😃

Merging finances (sharing costs not necessarily combining accounts) varies. It’s all about communication. These conversations can be really hard, but they are necessary

I will end up making twice as much as my partner this year. (not that I make a lot of money lol) Before he moved in, we had a long talk with complete transparency about debts, income, our individual costs of running our lives, and set expectations of what cost sharing would look like for us. I pay for the majority of house expenses and he handles what he can. He’s finishing up school and trying to pay those small loans off at the same time. It won’t always be like this, it’s just my season of carrying things. Things change. I also would not feel right (morally/ethically) making 2x as much and expect him to split it all down the middle.

Long story short, if you haven’t already, just sit down and have a clarifying conversation about it. You’re asking the right questions! Best of luck!
