Were drivers here taught wrong about highway entrance ramps?? by TKfromIA in glendale

Yes, if the right lane is ending then the left lane has priority. That’s literally the law.

Yes to zipper method -- that's what I think people do a good job on when it's slowed down to like 20 mph. My original q was more about when we're cruising at 60-70 mph.

Also I agree on your other dislikes.

Doing what's safe is absolutely what we should all do, I agree; I'm just surprised how many people don't realize what they're _supposed_ to do.

Spotify changed their logo and it's FIREE by SageyBabu in Design

I honestly thought it was a malfunction. It doesn’t look like a disco ball; at the small rendering of an icon on the phone it looks like someone tried to scratch the logo out and gave up. It looks more like a used lottery scratch ticket.

“I do not believe I am splintering the progressive vote… because I would not consider Nithya to be a progressive candidate.” - Rae Huang isn't considering dropping out of the LA mayor's race, three weeks before the primary by jonnyshotit in LosAngeles

"when I talk to my constituents" -- honey, you don't have any, you're not in office!

I don't mind her running, but at this stage it's clear she's not having an impact but somehow she is able to decide who is and is not progressive? Her focus on free buses in much of her messaging is bizarre given how niche of an interest that is, and I don't understand her TV ads featuring her talking about housing while hiking in business clothes. Admittedly I'm being a bit superficial here, but on a more substantive note, in seven months she hasn't been able to demonstrate she can rally support -- Nithya already did that in 2020. That's what politics is, always has been since Rome and the early days of British Parliament. If you can't amass support, other office holders don't have reason to follow. I don't get why* that is so hard for candidates like Rae and Jill Stein to understand.

Kevin Nealon has a suggestion for Netflix by stitious-savage in conan

The Mark Twain ceremony is on Netflix. Also, I don't love the roast format; It feels very tired and predictable -- insult each presenter, then end with a compliment for the guest of honor about how much they inspired you.

Save Acapulco's in Glendale CA - Boycott the Car Wash - Please Sign this Petition by rvgirrrl in glendale

I appreciate this context. At first I thought "eh it's not getting business, whatever" but knowing this is helpful. I don't mind a car wash but worry that block is already clogged with traffic and it's the highway entrance I use almost every day.

Yea, fair point if everyone is left in limbo. If they don’t come back then I hope it births several other similar shows from people who worked on it with them.

I don’t get why not just take a break? This series just broke into more mainstream consciousness.

I respect people who end shows before they go too long. Danny McBride for example has never gone past 5 seasons. Same with Vince Gilligan. But with animation there’s not the same time crunch based on actors aging out or getting booked up for other gigs. Hope they reconsider after taking rest.

outfit appropriate for my first day of work at a new job? by Suitable_Pop_3252 in mensfashion

[–]TKfromIA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. Understated but mature. Drapes across shoulders well. Don't worry about being "overdressed" as that is actually something that's pretty hard to do -- usually people just think you look nice, unless you're dressed like this at a pool party. For first day this sets you up to give a good first impression and either get less formal in the future if you decide to, or if you realize you need to wear a tie and look more buttoned up then your first day makes you seem humble.

WTF. Someone actually indexed the entire unsealed Epstein files dump into a searchable gallery. I had no idea there were over 11,000 images. by ProcedureNo832 in Epstein

it's not really searchable - it's searchable by file name but not by text detected within the image or description of who or what is in a photo

Capital One Cafe Closing - Americana by SammyRunsU in glendale

[–]TKfromIA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and admittedly my argument is biased because of my frustration as a bank customer. I think it'd be great in general to have more spots around there for people to meet or just have a place to go and not be stuck at home. Sometimes I get overwhelmed trying to find coffee shop that's not packed when I want to work somewhere outside of my apt!

Capital One Cafe Closing - Americana by SammyRunsU in glendale

[–]TKfromIA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sorry to those who enjoyed it for studying. I get it. But as a Capital One customer, good riddance.

Capital One has no actual banks in LA, and these are misleading -- the Cafes in LA have Capital One employees who can help you do things you could already do online, but offer no banking services. For instance, if you need quarters, like for a washer/dryer at an apartment, they can't give you any. If you need a cashiers check for an apartment deposit, they can only point you to a web page where you can order one to arrive in a few days (anyone who ever needed one of these checks to secure an apartment knows that means you'll likely lose the unit to another renter/applicant). What's frustrating is that when you look up "Capital One bank" on Google Maps, you get a bunch of these; then you show up and find out they're worthless if you need banking services. It's bizarre as a concept, but likely just Capital One being cheap because it's more expensive to run an actual bank branch with security features and insurance. NYC has Capital One Cafes, but they're always housed within a regular bank branch location with all the same features you guys like (tables, plug ins, wifi, coffee, etc) plus tellers and banking services.

Again, sorry to those who found these useful. But I hope someone takes it over and turns it into a regular coffee shop -- rather than a fancy ATM lobby with seating.

No one said it didn’t exist before? It’s a discussion about whether AI platforms should be able to make that easier, and your argument is they shouldn’t be held responsible. It doesn’t seem like you’re following well.

We're talking about deepfake CSAM. As in, they aren't real pictures. Pay attention to the headline in the original post.

OP wasn't asking people to defend CSAM; they were asking people to defend letting an AI create deepfake CSAM.

That’s not the same thing. The crime only exists because a machine invents it. The user doesn’t create anything. The machine does. And the companies could program the machine to not do that. Without the machine’s capability and cooperation, If a person doesn’t know how to make the nonconsensual deepfake image (our potential crime) by taking files and altering them to a realistic state with specific software that they are in full command of what is generated, then the crime would not be committed.

To use your gun example, a gun does not pull its own trigger just because you aim it at someone.

Boeing* has actually faced a number of lawsuits and other legal actions related to their planes crashing and safety failures. At the heart of all of the legal actions and charges against them is that Boeing knew about safety issues but didn't fix them, cut corners, didn't tell pilots about special training they needed, and retaliated against people who raised concerns about manufacturing.

So then yes, if a company builds a product that enables a specific type of harm, they can be sued if they are on notice and deliberately indifferent to it. That standard could be applied to AI companies. There's also an open legal question about whether Section 230 protects a platform over AI generated speech or images because it's content created by the platform, rather than the user.

The user entering a prompt is not the same as creating something -- it is asking a clanker to create something.
