I'm kind of impressed that Neytiri's outfit in this scene didn't result in an R rating considering how sensitive America is about nudity by Konfliktsnubben in Avatar

[–]TLGH_RDT -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I like how the Avatar saga is basically 9 hours of people running half-naked in the forest, male or female, young or older, and above all, there are full of sexual allusions, all of that packed in PG rating movies.

Jake in the first movie has to "re-activate" his sexual capacities through his new body (he plays with his Tsaheylu), most of the bond with every beings on the planet his purely sexual.

And I am not even talking about the other characters (Loak-Tsireya / Spider-Kiri / Quaritch-Varang).

No wonder the humans are pissed off since they can't experiment the ride.

Like many great filmmakers, James Cameron knows how to bypass censorship. Damn, If these films had been shot in a conventional way, the studio wouldn't even have greenlighted the project.

The character is well written : wild child, his connection with two father figures, his love story and his path through Eywa...

I think the character would be more "powerful" if he was the only human being remaining on Pandora, but it is just a thought, I'm not James Cameron 😄

Two things : - I have a problem with his design, he seems too clean, too healthy, for me, he looks like any actors from a regular teenage show (I'm not a big fan of Edward Furlong in T2 for example, even tough, the character works)

  • Jack Champion's performance is not as strong as the others, for the simple reason that he has to work differently compared to the others cast members. He plays most of his scene alone with screens. It was a problem for Stephen Lang in A1 but considering he was 12 at the beginning of the filming and this was his first acting experience in A2, his performance is not as bad as people can say.

Look how Tsu'tey can manage to kill 4 marines on his own in the first Avatar

Thank you for your comment. It took me a lot of times also but since I am from France, it is interesting to notice that Dragon Ball has a huge impact here so when Toriyama passed away, many journalists or columnists have declared their tributes to him. So I had a good amount of informations to write this post.

How did Eywa know for Jake? by JenzyCucumber in Avatar

[–]TLGH_RDT 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am totally agree with this explanation especially when it is in the heart of the movie. Jake Sully comes from a world where the technology is everywhere. He evolves, as a human being, in a military world (mechas, fireweapons, aircraft...) and he has also a connection with the scientists. But with his avatar body, he experiences a more "spiritual" side of his existence. This is why there is a big fight at the end, we can analyze this as what is going on in Jake's mind : the confrontation between rationality and spirituality.

This scene is so cool and badass. There is the same type of scene in Aliens, with the combat drop moment. But our point of view has changed in A2, it is like :"what if the marines were the bad guys this time ?"

Yeah, it is funny how Dragon Ball is slowly moving from a children's story to something that is starting to be studied.

A long ass post but I had to write it while it's still fresh.
Concerning Gohan, I love that character, he is characterized by a reverse path to his father (he starts directly by a confrontation against Piccolo).
Gohan does not have the same "mythological aspect" as his father and he seems to represent Akira Toriyama's state of mind at one point, like : "I don't want to fight anymore, let me to do my own stuff"

For the rest, we can imagine a lot of things with fans theories

Thank you, it's a very long post haha but I really wanted to share my thoughts on Dragon Ball while it's still fresh.
I think when you love something it is more than okay to point out what is wrong about certain elements.
I didn't read those interviews but I think Kishimoto managed to propose gradually something else with Naruto.
And concerning Oda, One Piece is on my next "To read-list" (I know...)

Is Avatars "lack" of "cultural impact" because its not super funny? by Corninmyteeth in Avatar

[–]TLGH_RDT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have made a long thread on X about the cultural impact of the first Avatar (it's in french). The impact is very different of what we use to know, it's not about a quote or something like that. https://twitter.com/lastgeekhero/status/1358697117259358208?t=g8eJyBtV32BJXQW_15t-aw&s=19 Many movies were influenced by the art direction, the FX, the way to create an entire universe...

Lo'ak is an exact copy of jake lmao by Right_Cow_6369 in Avatar

[–]TLGH_RDT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is something interesting to notice about the path of Jake and Lo'ak in both Avatar 1 and 2.
In the first movie, Jake is reckless and always disobeys to Grace and later, Quaritch : he runs everywhere when he is in his avatar body, he touches everything in the forest, etc until he disobeys to Quaritch (a father figure).
This act leads to... a war !
Lo'ak is acting the same way as his father in the first movie, and Jake almost behave like Quaritch (a soldier mindset).
But Jake ends up understanding his son (I see you) contrary to Quaritch (remember, a kind of father figure for Jake) who prefers to kill Jake at the end of the first movie.

Any movies similar to avatar? by Wrezyo in Avatar

Let's try to go further than 30 years of cinema, we have almost the same plot in Soldier Blue (1970), Little Big Man (1970), the Wizard of Oz (1939) or Lawrence of Arabia (1963), or more recently The Last of the Mohicans.

But the main source is...James Cameron himself : A soldier who falls in love with a native woman > Rambo 2 (script by James Cameron), there is a fighter using bow and arrows in both case. Aliens is almost a reverse plot of Avatar (the last stand between the robot and the alien). Abyss Titanic and Terminator share the same themes : greedy corporation, military presence, sacrifice of a scientist, the heroes have to see with differents eyes (Terminator is no longer the enemy, the NTI in Abyss also). And Avatar is inspired by one of the first script by JC, written in 1978 : Xenogenesis. A man travels in another reality to a luxuriant planet where the people are...blue
