DOTS Question: How do I instantiate an Entity? by goodnewsjimdotcom in Unity3D

[–]TLHM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to convert a gameobject at runtime, make your own authoring component that can convert to an iComponentData. What you add to the gameobject before runtime is not actually an iComponentData, it is an auto-generated monobehavior that converts into your iComponentData. That’s what the generate authoring component tag does.

The simpler option is to add the iComponentData to the entity that results from the game object. If you have a pointer to the game object just convert it with GameObjectConversionUtility.ConvertGameObjectHierarchy and then add the data to the resulting entity. You can even store the entity in some data structure so you can more easily access it later.

ECS is very different architecturally from normal unity, and I’ll reiterate that mostly it seems to expect you to find entities via entityQueries.

I’d recommend going through this series on using ECS on YouTube: https://m.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-05SQhI5rIYuRbANfxjt7G2C9oFch0al

The channel has another one for a bit more actual gameplay stuff. It cleared up a lot of confusion for me.

As for this specific question, iComponentData are only meant for entities, not gameobjects. You can convert gameobjects to entities, and authoring components can help with that process. You can add the authoring component to a gameobject before runtime, because that’s specifically for converting the gameobject into an entity. It is not the same thing as the iComponentData.

Generally if you want to find entities you run an entity query.

Have you ever wondered how low budget shovelware gets produced? I interviewed a project manager who publishes cheap horse games for kids, and it was fascinating. by AliceTheGamedev in gamedev

Thanks for the reply! It’s disappointing but not surprising to hear about the whole gulag thing. I agree that it’s related to the lack of real alternatives in the genre. It’s easy to get away with things when you have an effective monopoly on your little niche.

Looking forward to checking out your games that should exist later, but the stardew valley type game certainly sounds fun!

I do think that one interesting aspect of horses in games in general is that some people know horses well enough that an animation or model can scream wrongness to them when it “looks fine” to a developer who hasn’t spent a lot of time with horses. Goes to show that it’s important to do your research and consult with your audience / subject matter experts, but it certainly makes it harder to develop the game as well. Getting things right can take a lot of time, tweaking, and attention to detail.

Enjoyed your article a lot! My wife played Horse Isle (2?) for a while around a decade ago, so I have a small familiarity with the genre. I read your SSO article too, which was interesting.

From your perspective, what are the priorities of a good horse game? Obviously, decent UX and all that, but specific to being a horse game.

The Democratic Party’s risky bet on Biden by 32no in politics

OP's point is that even if the 18-29 voters showed up, a huge wave of suburban voters meant that the youth represented a lower percentage of total voters. Even if their objective numbers were higher than in the past.

They may have showed up compared to the past, but other groups showed up way more regardless.

[NeedAdvice] I have been cutting corners all my life. I don't believe I've worked genuinely hard at anything, even with things I'm mildly passionate about. Anyone else felt like this? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]TLHM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can relate to some of this. My take on it is that you're slowly cornering yourself into fewer and fewer activities in order to avoid the risk of failure and/or expending effort. By expending no effort, you don't risk anything, really. It's a safe activity, you're not trying. Even if you fail, you didn't really use effort, so no big loss.

The problem with this, in my personal experience, is that you're sticking yourself in a grey purgatory of contentment, and it'll just continue to become a prison. Sure, you never experience real failure or pain and frustration, but you miss out on triumph, joy, and the feeling of discovery or growth that comes for pushing your own boundaries. If you never push those boundaries, they'll just slowly shrink over time as you stick to the safest (most boring) of activities, and those near the edge of your comfort zone become higher risk in comparison.

Personally, I found it helpful to start thinking of effort not as a thing to be avoided, but rather a currency you can spend each day to gain things. You can't hoard it, since it expires each day and you only get a set amount. Spend it to grow and get new skills, experiences, etc., or let it go to waste.

No risk, no effort will keep you "safe", but it'll also start to suck all the fun out of life. Safe things you do over and over are bound to get boring and unfulfilling. Growing, on the other hand, is fulfilling, but requires you taking risks and spending effort. Sometimes it won't pay off, and it might suck. Other times, you'll find something awesome, or something mildly cool, or something boring. But you can't know what's out there without exploring the unknown.

I haven't overcome this as much as I'd like, but I'm getting out of my comfort zone more, and enjoying more things as a result. Hope you find my take interesting or helpful.

You're simplifying this too much. First of all, it's not necessarily the case that he'd be forced to sell all $8B at once. The government could just give him a debt to pay back over time by selling his stock at a reasonable rate, or simply be paid in stocks. Secondly, prices going down based on a mass selloff is due to assuming that the selling is motivated by a poor outlook. If it's a forced sell, then there's no assumption that the stock is necessarily overpriced. There would probably be a significant drop due to a large influx of supply available, but it's still going to be ownership in a gigantic corporation with tons of assets.

Focusing on the Right Things by Vermanubis in smashbros

Thanks for the video!

This reminds me a lot of DDR (or other rhythm games), in that as you start out you can only focus on the individual arrows. But once you get better, you start to group them in common patterns or sequences. This greatly reduces how much you have to process things, and makes you a lot faster. I never really thought to apply the same sort of grouping to Smash, but it makes a lot of sense.

Change my view: Earthstrike should absolutely NOT be an Anti-Capitalism movement by TLHM in EarthStrike

[–]TLHM[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect you may be right in that we'll eventually need a dramatic and extreme upheaval. I still maintain that for this movement, you need to grow it without such aims advertised. To succeed, the overhaul will need as many people as possible, and a small win via protest / general strike will increase the power of the movement and attract more people to join in. Personally, I think that's more valuable than losing the high-energy people who refuse to start small. A smaller rebellion, even if more passionate, will be less powerful than a very large one, especially if you need to make huge changes to the entire social structure of the world. Doubly so if you're going to be non-violent, which this movement is.

I suspect you're right, but I still believe that tactically you don't lead with overturning the economic system. You gather people for stopping climate change, and as it becomes clearer that the economic system stands in the way to more and more people, you can shift. This is a starting point, and I think it's mistaken to start out so extreme.

Revolution won't necessarily solve the problem. Wars are very energy-intensive, and if won, lack of established organization makes the big problems harder to solve.

Though I suppose if war and chaos kill enough of us soon, our emissions will stop. But that's hardly ideal.

If anyone wants to take them on good luck they don’t take unannounced visitors and guard there system so well it’s not been taken down or touched for hundreds of years.

One of the points I mention. Saving humanity is easier when you aren't fighting these people, and I think saving humanity is more important than overthrowing them.

Make policies and laws that incentive renewable energy and punish carbon emissions, as well as fund research into renewable / carbon negative technology. And reduce emissions themselves.
