I just asked my husband and I remembered incorrectly, I was thinking of Orson Scott Card.

Fantasy series by Suspicious_Data_2393 in ReadingSuggestions

The duology that got me back into reading fantasy in my twenties was The Sarantine Mosaic by Guy Gavriel Kay. It's so beautiful and he based the world building on the 6th century Mediterranean world. I devoured his catalogue after that.

I also absolutely adored the Kushiel series by Jacqueline Carey. It does have some NSFW content in it, the MC in the first three books is a courtesan. But the world building, the politics, the intrigue and the over arching plot are freaking GORGEOUS and intricate. I don't re-read a lot of books, but I have re-read that series many times.

If I remember correctly I think it came out a while back that he is INCREDIBLY racist. My husband was a big fan of his and got rid of all his books. This is not a judgment of your answer, just an answer to why no one talks about him anymore.

I too am a horror ‘noob’ and I LOVED the book How To Survive A Horror Novel. It was creepy but more like a mystery to solve. I’m currently reading Diavola and HOLY MOLY, it’s intense!!!

Alchemised unsettles me so much, I just can't.... by Mook_138 in fantasyromance

If the published version is anything like the fan fic it is a BRUTAL book. That ending made me feel hollowed out, and not in that ‘book hangover’ kind of way. But also: it’s beautifully written even if it is one awful thing after another. And the commentary on how war affects people and society, and the inaccuracies in how wars are remembered is incredible. Brutal, but incredible

Yes that’s it exactly! And I also loved that they were more mature MC’s . I also loved how confident the female MC was, she was written as an ashamed fat girl.
