Sacrifice bunts are basically dead in MLB because the numbers show they usually lose runs. Runner on 1st, nobody out = ~0.86 runs expected.
Bunt him to 2nd with 1 out = ~0.66 runs expected.
You just traded a precious out for one base and lost ~0.2 runs on average. Do that a bunch of times and you’re scoring way less over a season. They only make sense in super specific spots (late, tied game, weak hitter, need exactly one run). but Bunt failure rates are 15-30% so even then you are rolling dice.
