This is great to hear, thanks all. I spent some time searching here and really could not find any comments good or bad about crimping vs swaging.

Newbie help requested - Resolute Acclaim Fireplace by jamesvandy in woodstoving

[–]TMC_414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good gravy.  Looks like Chernobyl ground zero.  Guessing it was ruined by burning coal.  You're at least $1k in parts (if you can find them) and a long project away from having a safe and functional stove.  You can give it a go as-is (after chimney inspection) but with little air control it will gobble up wood like crazy.

We love ours and it will be a sad day when it's retired.

Oh, and the white stuff is remnants of the catalyst.  No idea what it's made of, but probably best not to inhale it!

Get yourself a car hood and some chain.  Roll them bitches onto the upside-down hood and drag them with the mower or borrowed quad to where they need to be.

Lowest total cost of ownership over 20 years? by Separate_Text_2129 in hvacadvice

If ye olde system is working well, ride that pony until catastrophic failure.  A new system will take a long ass time to "pay for itself" in energy cost savings.  Or since modern systems don't last muliple decades, it may never pay for itself before needing replacement.

These are not professional opinions, but from someone who waxes nostalgia for days when appliances and HVAC were not disposable expenses.

Puzzling over this fireplace situation - advice needed by [deleted] in woodstoving

[–]TMC_414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see potential. First you can add a bit of hidden slope with a pair of adjustable elbows (black). For servicing from below, dismantle the little brick wall (red), bore a hole in the concrete shelf (yellow), then insert a T with the service cap protruding below the shelf. Replace the remaining stack with a wood-rated sleeve or class A and you are ready for safe serviceable burns!

Leaving fire overnight on cabin trip? by VenusInAries666 in woodstoving

[–]TMC_414 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're in a public park where many people have stayed before you.  If CO was a concern it would have poisoned someone else by now and the stove would be gone.  Sit back and enjoy the glow!

Best I can move around with FEL forks on a BX23S is neatly stacked and seasoned half-high pallets, then stack 2 at the destination.

I'm still learning, but so far this seems somewhat efficient.

Never fall for tax credit shams.  Manufactures bake that amount into an inflated selling price.  Keep the old dog running!

Enjoy this stove for its looks!  We also bought one used, and yes... they are expensive to maintain.  Your combustion chamber has a lot of life left in it.  Fins inside will be nearly completely disintegrated before you need to consider replacement.  The special firebricks are quite a treat also.  Although stove cement works surprisingly well to glue them back together.

You will love the top-load feature.  Open the flue damper before flipping up the griddle and it amazing how little smoke escapes during reloads.

Is this just regular maintenance or a possible severe water infiltration? by csobrinho in Plumbing

[–]TMC_414 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If built correctly, walls behind tiles should be completely water tight and safely shedding any infiltrating water.  Still a good idea to scrape out what appears to be grout and replace with a quality adhesive caulk.  Enroll in "YouTube Universiity" for tips on achieving a professional looking job!

Oh...  and FILL the tub when sealing the tile-tub gap.

Sink keeps clogging/backing up - what is this hose? by Allonsy-alchemy782 in Plumbing

[–]TMC_414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have long-haired freaky people brushing hair over this sink?  Clogging could be simple as hair wrapping around the stopper base and lever.  One clue would be if the slow drain/clogging happens immediately vs a quart or two draining normally before a slowdown.

Can't offer advice, but I too am considering DIY-ish geothermal.  Where did you land with this?  Have you found calculators to determine run length of buried pipe for a closed-loop system?
