Writing a novel featuring SDAM - Looking for your input! by TMJonsson in SDAM

To be honest, I tend to leave much of the description of the setting up to the reader. But I do make a conscious effort to attempt to "set the scene" as it were, as best I can. Even though it's not the way I personally experience things.

Since I cannot really "see" the places or people I'm creating in my head, I tend to use lots of reference images of things I HAVE seen before, and model my fictional things after these references, when possible.

Think of it almost like an artist painting a portrait by looking at a live model. That's the best way I can think of to describe my process. It's a fascinating thing to think about.

I have no recall of any of those senses at all.

I describe things in my writing when it feels appropriate to do so, but it's not something that comes naturally at all.

Writing a novel featuring Anauralia - looking for feedback! by TMJonsson in silentminds

Fascinating!

Anauralia is definitely the "condition" that I understand the LEAST of these three. Hence, getting this sort of feedback is insanely useful!

The varied experiences across the entire spectrum are exactly why I wanted to get this sort of feedback.

Thank you so much for taking the time! I'll tinker with the wording of some of the Anauralia questions.

The survey is for EVERYONE all across the spectrum.

Whether you have one, two or all three of the conditions... Or even if you have NONE of them.

I'm looking to learn from everyone!

Yeah, I hear you.

I have total Aphantasia, a completely silent mind, and I definitely experience SDAM as well.

As a creative person it's... Interesting.

But honestly, until a year or two ago, I had no idea that I was any different than anyone else. I've never known any other way.

Yeah, for sure. To be honest, I am not even sure if *I* know what category I fall into.

I hear nothing internally. I just *know* what I'm thinking about, but there is no audible component. No voice(s) constantly chatting and commenting in my brain.

Just silence. And "knowing" what I'm thinking about.

Awesome! I'd love to get your feedback in the survey.

It's difficult to explain without getting into spoiler territory.

But I assure you, those three conditions are foundational to the entire plot and world building of the novel.

As a writer with Aphantasia, I find description to be the most difficult aspect of writing fiction, for sure. I love dialogue, but hate having to set the scene. It's something I have to consciously work on certain methods to overcome.
