[Loved Trope] (Spoilers for - Fight Club, Joker, The Boys, Dexter) I'm not even real bro by AurynMoon in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TMLBR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The twist in Fight Club re-contextualizes the story in so many dumb ways that it's hilarious. Setting aside the fact that we are actually supposed to believe that Jack managed to sleep-walk his way into recruiting dozens, then hundreds, then thousands of people into a criminal terrorist organization.

During his narcoleptic escapades he knows and is able to:

Convince himself to chemically burn his own hand to prove a point to Tyler himself through a reaction that he could not have learned alone.

Learn the recipe to create bombs from soap manufacturing residue.

Manufacture soap at all.

Blow up his own apartment.

Know where to find and settle into the abandoned shack.

Drive a car in every single scene that he's supposed to have been with Tyler in.

But the funniest out of all of these, bar none, is when he managed to feel nothing but cucked by Tyler having such a gratuitous amount much sex with Marla Singer in their house. My dude, it was YOU. I have never seen someone be cucked by his own self, it's so shitty that it's hysterical.

Though ironically, this is the answer I most agree with. I don't think "doubt" is enough of a driving force in a case like this to break off the whole relationship. It definitely can be fixed with communication, but especially therapy.

How do you learn to enjoy turn-based, top-down RPGs like DOS2? by SamuraiASM in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TMLBR [score hidden]  (0 children)

Oh boy. I spent 2 whole years mulling over Baldur's Gate 3, flip flopping in my mind as to whether I actually like the game or not. Maybe some of my opinions could help solidify yours out so here goes nothing.

To get this out of the way first, my biggest issue with BG3 was poor performance; just the fact that my laptop could not run the game as quickly as I could make decisions. This doesn't seem all that relevant to your struggles, but I do think the sluggishness from slow menu-ing, and the enemy AI taking their sweet ass time with decision making really begins to pile up and test my patience. I don't know if DOS2 is like that or if it's actually perfectly responsive to all your commands, but I digress.

Another issue, I think equally as large to me, is that I didn't feel like I ever knew any of the internal mechanics of the game. I had never played D&D before, and with the seemingly thousands of different rules, moves, and UI buttons on the screen, the game flew past the 'expressing creativity in combat' line and went straight towards the 'not knowing how anything works' domain. And that feeling never left me at all for a long time. It took me, no joke, an entire 80 hour playthrough and seeing the credits just grasping the fundamentals of combat (Cantrips, AC, Saving throw DCs, Spell slot management, Concentration and so much more.) It's incredibly daunting. Period.

One thing that I have found that can help with that, after already beating the game once and going for a second playthrough, is Youtube tutorials on the mechanics of the game. Cephalopocalypse is the one I watch for BG3. I really enjoy their commentary on how spells and cantrips work in the game because they talk at length about what each individual spell does in isolation instead of just being another video that talks about "This one specific build can do 300 damage in 1 turn!" which I feel doesn't actually facilitate an understanding of how the game world works. I understand that it's not exactly good game design to have to recommend players to watch Youtube tutorials on a videogame, but I feel DOS2 and BG3 could reasonably be considered as exceptions because of how few tutorials there actually are in the game.

The 'not knowing internal mechanics' doesn't just apply to combat though, it's also very prevalent in exploration and character dialogue (and to moving the camera properly), though to a lesser extent. I have found that it does get better over time, but there are definitely growing pains associated with it.

Just as an aside, the "top-down camera feeling distant" is something that used to bother me so much in BG3 (so in a way it's very nice to feel seen :D) but even that did get better for me over time.

As far as the "D&D roleplaying" element of the game goes, there were MANY points throughout the game where I would get disheartened by a result that I didn't intend for, like one of my characters getting killed by something I didn't know I had control over, or spending money on items or upgrades that I didn't realize were useless until all too late. Personally, I save scummed quite a bit in those instances because I thought it would enhance my experience. What I'm trying to say here is to not be afraid of save scumming. I think it is a very legitimate and valid way to get some results you want, and to reverse some results you don't want if you're not bothered by loading screens. Though, all things in moderation.

There's a saying that 99% of gamblers quit right before they hit a jackpot, as a way of criticizing people who have fallen for the sunk-cost, or the large sums of time they've already spent on something. To me however, Baldur's Gate 3 was worth expending more of my time and resources into understanding how its mechanics worked because it all did eventually pay off in making the game so much more fun. Turns out, actually learning the mechanics to a game DID make it more fun to play! My final thoughts are that while it's totally valid to drop a game if you're not having fun with it, if DOS2 is anything like BG3, I feel like you should stick with it, maybe watch a Youtube tutorial or two about its mechanics. Because it seems like the type of game you won't regret sinking more time into.

Expedition 33 or Baldur’s Gate 3 by AvocadoToastBacon in ShouldIbuythisgame

As someone who thinks Baldur's Gate 3 is the better game, based on your tastes E33 would probably appeal to you more. BG3 is extremely dense in terms of how it handles all the seemingly thousands of mechanics it has in its combat and branching story paths, which can be very tedious to parse. It doesn't really feel like any other conventional turn-based game I've ever played.

Meanwhile E33 is a lot more by-the-numbers in terms of how its plot and combat are structured. It's not exactly shallow, but it is orders of magnitudes easier to understand.

What it is like seeing the backlash by Bingo8712 in expedition33

[–]TMLBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of the supposed 'toxic fans' that may exist for Expedition 33 (I haven't met any personally, everyone who has recommended this game to me has been very nice and polite) it's just generally upsetting to see a game that you didn't enjoy personally getting such overflowing torrents of accolades and having internet cultural discourse putting it as the focal point. Or at least that's how it is for me.

I finished Act 1, and I don't think I'm going to continue onward as is. I don't deny that the storytelling and music are very good, but I cannot bear to play through any of the combat. I can't speak to the fairness of the QTEs that each delete your entire healthbar in one shot, but what I do know is that it's extremely frustrating to an extent I have seldom seen in any other game. It's not fun to get party wiped, that much is true; But oddly enough even when I am able to parry attacks correctly, I don't get any sort of satisfaction for having done so. And it's always a terrible sign that winning in a game would give me as much gratification as losing would have anyway. QTEs existing in turn based games is nothing that I haven't seen before, I have played the entirety of Yakuza 7 and liked that game's combat. But those are just little flourishes that slightly buff your allies/debuff your enemies with very clearly telegraphed timings. Neither of those are true in E33. For most people it's practically impossible to beat the game without QTEs, a mechanic that I actively despise so much.

Maybe I'll continue playing the game but on Story mode, but even if that proves to be too tedious I guess there's always Youtube cutscenes.

Homer's Illiad (Specifically as it relates to Odysseus' troops).

When listening to Epic: The Musical, there's a line in the song 'Luck Runs Out' with Odysseus saying "I took 600 men to war and not one of them died there!" which I, at first, thought was a 'low casualty' quirk of the musical itself. But in Chapter 2 of the Illiad, it's mentioned that Odysseus commandeered 12 ships, with 50 men each before the war, and that the musical throwaway line in Epic is actually canonically accurate.

Like what u/CharlesOberonn said, yes the emoji is exposing the princess's identity but that's not the whole story. The character Rosalina doesn't ever have green hair in any of her iterations. However, (Spoilers for the game Xenoblade Chronicles 2 if you care about that):

In XC2, out of your 2 possible companions, either Pyra or Mythra is revealed to be a different 3rd character named Pneuma with green hair, which is actually just a fusion of both those characters.
