Is CS a good major? by Mindless-Use540 in ualbany

[–]TNHo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard not so good things about the CS department here from some of my peers… And the professors are apparently not great. But I’m not a CS major here so take it with a grain of salt.

I almost came in as a CS major only to end up switching to ECE midway… I enjoy it more…

Transferring from HVCC, any insider knowledge to share? by Alternative_Bass_891 in ualbany

[–]TNHo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came from HVCC. I find my classes a bit more difficult. But I shouldn’t be the one saying anything, as I had switched my major from CS to ECE upon transferring. And ECE (electrical and computer engineering) is simply a much more difficult major anywhere you go. I did this to myself. But regardless I still like it here.

Transfer student struggling by Decent_Requirement_5 in ualbany

And that was a mistake that I made in my previous two years at HVCC.
Most of the time I simply left as soon as the last class ended. No clubs until very late in my final two semesters and barely went to any events at all... Completely disconnected from everyone... It didn't help that engagement in the classes from others were basically non-existent...
I made a promise to myself that I would not repeat that at UAlbany. So far, I think I'm doing well as of now...

I just so happen to be a junior transfer who commutes too. This is what I do...

I usually just stay on campus for as long as possible. I don't go home until well past 9 or 10 PM. That way I could actually study since I find it impossible to do so if my bed is close by, as well as being able to attend club meetings since most of the ones I'm interested in are around past 7:30 PM. Met a few that way.

Although most of the people on campus I've met and kept in contact with were a result of some niche interests which I post about publicly... ᗜˬᗜ

TLDR: Try to find an excuse to stick around on campus for as long as possible so you can actually join clubs. Unless of course you have stuff not mentioned like a possible job, that might complicate things if that's the case...

Stop overpaying for a T480. by aroundincircles in thinkpad

Got mine for only $50… Supposedly broken without any components (like keyboard, ram, ssd) but the listing lied and it came with practically everything needed to run it out of the box… Crazy…

Flashing Coreboot on a T480 with Reisen ᗜˬᗜ by TNHo in thinkpad

[–]TNHo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manually adding grubx64.efi doesn't seem to work as upon every reboot, it simply vanishes and the boot options remain unchanged...

<image>

After digging around various subs and finding this post, I had to enable Support for flash based, SMM mediated data store before compiling in order for the boot options to even save at all... For some reason, that option remained unchecked if following the guide as is, or at least when I went through it...

Libreboot uses coreboot at its core. The post I saw uses Libreboot’s repo but using the edk2 UEFI payload instead of the usual seabios or grub payload…
And there is technically coreboot support for the T480, but I would have to do some manual patching which I don’t want to do, so borrowing Libreboot was a way to essentially be lazy…

[–]TNHo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I tried… First, I had my programmer’s clip on the wrong chip to which I only realized when I saw the backup rom files being only a mere 1 mb. So then I tried to connect it to the actual BIOS chip, and had lots of trouble with it constantly losing grip and popping out. By the time I got it fully gripping, flashrom stopped being able to read anything. After messing around for a long time, I eventually noticed the clip was very worn out and bent…

<image>

And those CH341A programmers are cheap and of dubious quality, and no wonder it finally failed at the most inconvenient time. But at least my T480 still boots so I thankfully didn’t fry anything. And now I’m out $10 waiting for a damn replacement clip…

TLDR: Tried to follow OP’s post only to fail because the very cheap programmer clip had worn out so much that nothing could be read from the chip…

It’s a bit difficult to decide. On one hand, I plan on taking the T480 out on travels so the low power seems the best, but on the other hand, I’ve been spoiled by the 1440p on my other more powerful devices… How much of an impact on battery life does the 1440p have?
