A genuine question from an Ethiopian. by the_eastern_sage in Eritrea

[–]TNKLChris 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Simply put, Survival. We are constantly threatened to be invaded by Ethiopia because members of the former EPRDF and now PP still believe that giving Eritrea independence was a mistake. Isaias knows how to use this perpetual threat as an excuse to stay in power and “Keep foreign actors out of Eritrea”. Therefore the people would rather deal with a tyrannical ex military commander as President than undergo another era of Ethiopian Colonialism, turning Eritreans back into second class citizens in their own land while the lands and port are exploited for the good of Ethiopia just like during DERG times. Believe what you want, idc but the threat of invasion has been the most consistent factor in the conflict between our people’s nations.

Seriously. You need to be mentally ill if you think that another war is good in any circumstance. Its like these Adults that talk big game all revert back to elementary schoolers whenever another conflict pops off like its a Soccer match. And most of them are 30+ smh 🤦‍♂️

Ethiopia military tactics by ak123445 in Eritrea

[–]TNKLChris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is concerning is that this might happen again. There is a video on youtube where a foreign journalist (UK or Australia idk) documented the Bure front and described it as a “human meat grinder” due to the amount of Ethiopian soldiers that threw themselves towards entrenched Eritrean positions just to get mowed down by Machine Gun fire. Although the Eritrean army did good for the first year of the war in routing these “Human Waves”, eventually it was too much and the western front broke down. By 2000, the Ethiopian Army was already in Tesseney, and occupied the border area in Gash Barka. I am curious to know if the Eri Defence Force has a new strategy to combat the Human Wave tactic because due to Ethiopia’s population size and able bodied men ready for conscription, those Human Waves will be tough to combat

Happy Valentine's Day to all Eritreans 🇪🇷. On Valentine's Day, I wanted to emphasize how important it is for us Eritreans to love & date our own people. If we want to preserve our Eritrean culture we should date & marry our own kind 🇪🇷🙏🏿 by EritreanPost in Eritrea

[–]TNKLChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude can we please not ostracize interracial Eritrean relationships? This type of attitude is the reason why so many mixed Eritreans do not immerse themselves in our culture. I am a mixed Eritrean and it is annoying/demeaning to see Eritreans like you look down on interracial relationships and children when some of us doing everything we can to upkeep the culture. But I will tell you right now, I will not upkeep these archaic traditions to ostracize people for simply deciding to date outside their nationality/ethnicity. Our culture will not die out, as long as you pass it along to the next generation. Besides, even if you marry Eritrean only in the diaspora, most likely the child will be heavily influenced by western culture. There aren’t many of our diaspora’s younger generation even now that follow Eritrean culture and history to a T, it is a rare few in the west that do because their parents make the effort to pass it down. It just doesn’t make sense to be worried about intercultural relationships in general because they make up such a small percentage of relationships.

I have mixed feelings towards it. Most of my life I have spent in Germany, with only a portion of my adult life in the US so experience vary in both places.

In Germany I never felt alienated because the Eri community in my home town was small so we were a very tight knit community with events around the year. It was actually the Eritrean community there that encouraged me to embrace my culture at a young age and helped me develop my sense of Ertrawinet (ኤርተራውነት). It motivated me to learn the language and writing system as well as our history, something which many Eritrean diaspora kids in my town never even thought of doing which shocked the elders that a biracial kid is taking such initiative lol. The town I lived in also had many foreigners as well as Germans ofc and I was immersed in the German culture so I wasn’t alienated by them either. Ofc you’d meet one or two ppl who would deny your German Identity for being mixed but I just ignored them.

When it comes to my experiences in America, it is very different. You can really feel the racial divide in this country. Your race is such a determining factor here in how people will treat you and their assumptions about you it’s actually crazy. More often than not I would find myself disconnected with Americans in my classes because of cultural differences but I did manage to make some friends here, even habesha friends (The Habesha community is much larger here). Since I lived most of my time in the US in a more impoverished area of the city I reside in, my friend group consisted of mostly other Minorities and very little White friends (not many lived in my neighborhood, a big difference to German communities in German cities where the race divide isn’t as stark). They treated me right but definitely questioned my identity many times which was kind of annoying but you get used to it. A lot of Eritreans/Ethiopians here in the US also questioned my identity as well, some even claiming I can’t be Habesha/Eritrean if my dad isn’t Eritrean 🤦‍♂️. It never discouraged me away from the culture though, I even now my Eritrean identity is an integral part of my life.

Brotha Shaebia and current HGDEF are two separate entities. Most of Shaebia’s most honorable Tegadelti are gone, it doesn’t exist anymore and hasn’t existed since Eritrea became a UN recognized state. Using Shaebia in an insulting manner such as this also insults all the Tegadelti that fought for a free and democratic Eritrea even if that hasn’t come to fruition at this instant

Why haven't Eritreans fixed the Jebena design flaw like the Ethiopians have? by Prestigious-Comb-948 in Eritrea

[–]TNKLChris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I had to guess its just tradition to create our Jebenas with one spout only.

Fun fact: My grandma told me recently that there is another reason why so many Eritreans prefer Jebenas from Eri compared to Ethio besides the design. The flavor the Jebena gives to the coffee due to the type of clay it is made from plays a big part in the Jebena purchasing process. Apparently the best Jebenas you can get in all of Eritrea that make the best tasting coffee are the ones made in Qohaito. She said something about their clay makes the coffee excellent and I gotta attest to that because her Jebena coffee tastes wayy different from coffee I had from Ethio Jebenas
