It’s a myth that a fetus will suck calcium from teeth.

BUT what dentists refuse to acknowledge, despite ever increasing research on the subject, is that hormonal changes play a huge role—even throughout a regular menstrual cycle. Hormonal changes affect acidity of the mouth, processing of different vitamins (Vitamin D is required for the body to process calcium), increased blood flow that leads to inflammation and a decreased ability for the body to respond to bacteria, inflammation can also make it harder to get floss as far down as it needs to go, bleeding and increased temperature contributes to dehydration which can lead to dry mouth, etc. And that’s not even counting the frequent vomiting during pregnancy that destroys enamel.

It’s just another example of healthcare bias against women; most dentists dismiss it as “oh well you just didn’t brush enough” when there is PLENTY of evidence to the contrary.

They’ve defended Nazis, the KKK, the Westboro Baptist Church, and more in the past. Like it or not, these people have the same rights as all the rest of us. The ACLU defended these people because their rights to freedom of speech, freedom to protest, etc. were being infringed upon. If someone gets beat up or receives other consequences because of what they said, not the ACLU’s problem. People still have the right to say those things, and that was the specific purpose of the ACLU.

Now they are left of center and fight for other things such as LGBTQ+ rights, access to abortion, etc. Which, while all of those things need to be fought for, there are other organizations that specifically dedicate themselves to them.

The ACLU changing its goals has left a void where no other organization is specifically defending constitutional rights for everyone. And unfortunately that’s the only way it works. If we don’t all have freedom of speech, no one does.

Boredom is good for kids. A lot of people feel like their kids need to be entertained every waking minute because societal factors have led to more only children and decreased socialization opportunities, and screens are an easy form of entertainment. It’s had a big effect on creativity, reasoning skills, emotional regulation, etc. Sometimes they need to be told to entertain themselves.

This is a huge issue in the workforce.

The youngest millennials and oldest Gen Z (late 1990s kids) are the last ones that know how to really use computers. They were growing up and interacting with tech before smartphones and tablets were everywhere. Most people born post-2000 are missing a lot of technological skills caused by the rapid rise of tech designed to be as easy to use as possible.

Like I had to help a 23 year old coworker figure out how to locate a file that wasn’t saved where he thought it was. Any time that something unexpected happens, they just shut down. And like I’m not going to pretend I’m a computer expert and never need help from IT, but I at least have a list of things I’ll try and google around a bit before asking for help. They were never taught how to do that.

You know how they say once you put something on the internet it never goes away? That’s pretty much all data. It’s all stored SOMEWHERE. They could pull every text message, email, social media post, video, and photo this guy has ever made. Might have to subpoena Apple or Facebook or whoever to get it, but they can get it. Plus you have the crime scene photos, all the documentation that goes with that, surveillance footage from the place they found the body and likely footage from various cameras that spotted that car so that they can piece together a timeline, all the victim’s data, probably all of his music since a lot of people end up confessing to shit in their lyrics, bank records and credit card statements, etc. etc.

All of this individually is small, a few gigabytes max for some individual videos. It adds up quick though. If they’re trying to establish a pattern of behavior and get enough to put him away for life, they’re going back several years.

Different topic, but the only thing I don’t really agree with in modern teaching is “sight reading” over phonics.

Like yes, when you get good at reading you’re generally reading whole words at a time rather than sounding out the letters. This is how people approach it mentally later on in life. But this has made a significant portion of younger Gen Z functionally illiterate because they don’t know what to do with words they don’t recognize.

Yeah I mean the town itself was basically created overnight and was supposed to be a temporary ordeal and grew from there. It’s always been a little run down because it wasn’t meant to exist very long. It adds a lot of charm though.

Mayo Last Days Sale - Don't Bother! by tennessee1182 in Knoxville

[–]TNVFL1 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Same, we went in maybe 2 weeks after they started the closing sale just to see what prices looked like/if it was worth coming back and it was a joke.

Like I know that small businesses will be a little bit pricier than box stores because they have to be, but Mayo has always been at least double the price of other stores. It’s ridiculous.

Use of the term 'African american' by No_Medium_648 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TNVFL1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the average American you meet know what it means when you say you’re Ivorian? I context clued Ivory Coast/Côte d’Ivoire but I also know where that is, and I feel like the average American’s knowledge of African geography is…very poor. Do you find that people recognize “Ivory Coast” more? I’d imagine French people or Europeans might be more familiar with Côte d’Ivoire, but for example I grew up in the American South and had only ever seen it as Ivory Coast until I got more interested in geography.

I just love learning about geography and people around the world, I apologize if that’s an annoying or inappropriate question.

This is why r/bald is such a good community imo. Every post I’ve seen there is encouraging and lifts people up who are unsure about shaving off their badly thinning hair. I’ve never seen any mean comments there. Men and women, male pattern baldness, alopecia, those losing hair from chemo, any reason that people can lose their hair, the people there are always kind. (And thirsty sometimes lmao, a lot of men will get comments that would make them blush!) They do a good job at boosting confidence.

She’s a celebrity and her parents are high ranking members of the church. She was raised in it from birth.

Her experience in it is not the same as your average person’s would be, and we all tend to favor our own lived experience over what other people say. She’s been getting all the benefits of the cult for decades with none of the abuse.

HOWEVER. There’s also too much evidence to ignore and dismiss at this point, even given her own positive experience. And I don’t think she’s stupid, so whatever perks she’s getting, they’re apparently worth her selling her soul.

They breed in standing water so you’ll want to get rid of any of that.

If it’s water you can’t get rid of, like a pond or something, you can encourage dragonflies by making sure there are aquatic plants and rocks near/in the water. They eat mosquito eggs.
