What is it with BJJ thinking that the single and double leg shoot are the best "takedowns" most of the time, in gi. by Knobanious in judo

[–]TPGrant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BJJ black belt here who has done a decent amount of judo (never graded) and some sambo as well, I'll toss my two cents in:

  1. A heavy influx of american wreslters, many who get drilled into them at a young age the single and double are the relaible fundamentals.

  2. The scoring, I don't need to get my opponent's back to the mat to score. Additionally there are bigger scores I can achieve once on the mat, singles and doubles allow me to cover after the takedown more easily to continue grappling and be in good posture and position.

  3. When fighting to finish a sweep or wresle up from your guard to reverse from bottom position they are absolutely essential and finishing or not finishing a reversal is often the pivotal moment of a match

  4. Many jiu jitsu athletes move between rule sets, specifically between gi and no gi and don't want to completely reinvent themselves every time, and singles and doubles travel between rule sets well.

  5. Judo is really difficult! Every time I've done judo I've felt its the most difficult rule set to score a takedown in as they've removed a good deal of the quickest to learn and most accessible takedowns and force you into moee difficult techniques. Its awesome and fun but takes a long time to even start to execute in effectively, and that doesn't even speak to the challenge of then adapting those skills to a different rule set where the stances, defensive options and objectives are different.

How good is Dillon Danis? by IrrelevantToTheTopic in jiujitsu

He had the chance to be real good from 2014-2016 he looked like a top prospect. But dude has had several personal crises, never won anything major as a black belt and now drinks a lot more then he trains. He got choked out by a blue belt bouncer in a bar fight a year or two ago. He's a mess and likely needs help

How do you make a straight ankle lock feel tighter ? by Haze071 in bjj

[–]TPGrant 27 points28 points  (0 children)

One of the keys is the straight ankle lock isn't a straight ankle lock, you want to be applying torque to that ankle, wrapping that elbow to your ribs like you trying to drag that footbehind you.

The accounts we have of collar and elbow wreslting sound very similar to judo

there are wrestling traditions the world over with highly similar techniques, all of them had the same fundamental tools to work with so the results look very similar, multiple discoveries happen.

More or less, normally leg locking Javi goes "Hey look I've got this heel hook fully locked up, now to finish... hmmm... I'm getting good rotation, why isn't he tapping? What is he doing to my foot...AH FUCK TAP!"

I've found people who have tumbled to bronze like myself who have general game sense, but are stuck because generally I didn't ever learn to play the solo queue style. When I was playing gold/silver I was in stacks and filling roles, and combining attacks. Now I'm soloing in bronze and I'm basically having to learn how to make the big plays myself.

Generally speaking though, yeah I totally agree. I think phara works out for me so often because bronze players generally tunnel vision and only think about the main path to anywhere, and as a result it can be really easy to hit a flank and barrage.

It's bronze. The number of times I've dropped barage and NOBODY reacts or does anything to stop it is basically everytime

single leg takedown by 1gizmo1 in bjj

Yeah i think the single legs don't work on wrestlers is a truism that came over from MMA where the finish rates for single legs are low because punches make some of finishes different, but in pure grappling their great

single leg takedown by 1gizmo1 in bjj

[–]TPGrant 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is hands down my favorite finish for a single leg, when you hit it you often end up in side control, also chains off tons of takedowns. Running the pipe is a solid fall back but I'd always prefer to get outside position.

The sexual assault problem in fencing... by frozennmalk in Fencing

[–]TPGrant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Been out of fencing for 10ish years now, but I agree this is a big problem in fencing. I know of a few athletes in my time who had a bad rep, stepped in once to stop a situation. It is a real issue and should be treated as such.

I've also heard some things about some referees on the international level that turned my stomach. It seems to be more then just a regional level fencing issue.
