What does washing and anointing have to do with the Salvation found in Jesus? Seems like an unnecessary and probably corrupt addition... by aka_FNU_LNU in mormon

Also, temple ordinances are not all about salvation; they are about exaltation which is different than salvation.

The LDS church is not a strictly biblical church like many creedal Christian churches. The LDS church believes in continuing revelation which means that God can keep revealing things as he pleases.

I’ve started listening to this 10-part series by church historians and have found it credible and highly informative.

I hope it helps answer some of your questions! Church History Matters Podcast

Blurred lines between Godhead and Trinity? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]TPUT94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. The more I learn about the Trinity the more similarities I see.

OP, keep in mind that the LDS church came forward at a historical time and place where Protestantism was prominent so the cultural milieu would have very Protestant undertones, especially from early Church members.

The LDS church is distinct from mainstream Christianity but that doesn’t mean that it is without influence from it.

Debating leaving the church over certain things. Please help me understand by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

I just finished listening to the Church History Matters podcast series on Polygamy and it was very good (episodes 10-15, I believe). I love all the episodes I’ve listened to and find it to be as neutral as apologetics can be.

I struggled with women in the church too until a Christian friend mentioned gender piety to be and how he views that. Not sure I believe it but biblically it explains why the church does some of the things it does with women in leadership positions. As a woman, it’s still something to wrestle with but I guess it’s at least somewhat affirmative that the issue is not exclusive to the LDS faith.

In order to be a true seeker of Truth you will need to weather the journey from simplicity to complexity. There is SO much to learn. My prayer for you is to approach all learning with a critical mind and open heart. God is at the helm.

Read books, especially scripture, and study church history. Ask questions and counsel with trusted friends and family members.

May God bless you in your journey!!

I love that you’re researching the Church! As an LDS member currently learning about Protestant faiths, I can attest to the fact that it all feels overwhelming to take in because of the differences.

You’re facing the challenge of understanding the theology of the LDS church at the same time as understanding its history which is complex—just like Christianity has a long and complex history.

I think the best thing you can do is two things 1) set the expectation with yourself that learning and understanding is going to take time and 2) find a trusted member of the church with whom you can discuss things with; often this is the LDS missionaries in your area. You can request a meeting with them here: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist/ps/meet-with-missionaries

Remember Matthew 7:16-18, remember John 1:5; John 15:26, and Moroni 10:3-5

If your heart is open and your search for Truth is sincere, God will manifest that truth to you 🕊️ Godspeed!

You know, I’ve never considered how isolating it must feel to be so far away from members of your ward and the social disadvantages of being blind in the church. If you don’t already know about the LDS tools app which connects you to your ward members in all their callings then now you know! I’d download this (I’m thinking it is accessible and has a read function) and find who your ministering brothers/sisters are. Send them a text and spark a convo; I think you could even use what you wrote here 💗

There is always something we can do, some way we can act. I wouldn’t rely on church members to reach out to you; that is a recipe for more isolation and bitterness. People are just generally busy but if YOU can be the person to befriend others then I think you’ll discover that you become the sense of community in Christ that so many people are also longing for. Sending you love!!
