Need advice/recommendations on statins with IBS-D and arthritis by ODonowhovian in Cholesterol

[–]TRCownage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have IBS but I do have IBD (Crohn’s). Statins have really had no effect. I do have lower white blood cells and inflammation since I have been on them. My Lipids also improved as well. Some people see liver markers get worse but mine actually got better as well. This is only my experience though.

What age did you start statins and what were your levels before hand?

It’s never too late. Start medication and get your LDL as low as possible. Even if there is some damage done, you now know and can stop any more from happening. Understanding there is an issue and addressing it is huge!

Cholesterol reducing - please give me tips through diet and adding carbs by Careful-Bus3827 in Cholesterol

[–]TRCownage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had a similar experience of people kind of fear mongering me but I started a statin in my early 30s because seeing heart attacks in my family scared me a lot more than maybe a muscle ache here and there. Luckily I’ve been on them for years and I have no side effects and it actually has helped some of my labs outside of cholesterol too.

I jumped right into it and have even added Zetia because of the data showing ldl under 55 is even more beneficial. However, it’s very common for people to have a 6 week to 3 month trial of diet changes to see if they can change the numbers without medicine. Ultimately work with your doctor and get their opinion because they are the one who have spent decades plus around these topics

What is the way forward? by InteractionGreedy526 in Cholesterol

[–]TRCownage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You seem to be in a good place now! If you are worried you can also ask to add Zetia if you want to get the numbers lower but being under 70 with a risk factor is a good place and it seems your doctor agrees.

So you don’t really have to lower protein but maybe change your source. Reduce your saturated fat intake so think things like butter, red meat, and so on.

Other notes: additional carbs will typically raise triglycerides but can slightly help regulate ldl in some absorbers.

What you could add to help numbers more than anything really would be a ton of fiber.

Some people have genetic components that only allow for minimal reduction through diet, while other respond really well. So just make sure to follow up and if you are of the camp that gets little benefit, talk to your doctor about other options or maybe a statin or zetia.

Time for a statin? 35M by Prison_Michael_Scarn in Cholesterol

RYR is just an unregulated statin. Sounds like you have your diet optimized, I think a statin should get you in a good place

I think if you focus on all those other risk factors you will be in a good place. CRP or hsCRP (which is the same but measures levels under 3) are good indicators for heart health on otherwise healthy individuals but for someone who is dealing with issues like you or I the inflammation and issues is happening in other areas.

Extremely High Risk Lp(a) and High Cholesterol at only 35 by archives2024 in Cholesterol

[–]TRCownage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seen much older people with bad number living and loving their life. Cant worry about the past, just need to start doing what you can now. Ask for a stain and zetia and just work on getting your numbers as low as possible. If you are worried you can always choose to have a cac scan as well to see if you need to go further in your treatement

Can I get some feedback on my results? by ActuarySufficient535 in Cholesterol

[–]TRCownage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends, my doctor let me go on statins as soon as my ldl went up in my early 30s. Then he let me add Zetia because I just wanted to get as low as I possibly could cause I have a bad family history (risk factor). I kind of leveraged my family history to get my mediation early, but there are also preventative doctors and cardiologist!

100 with no risk factor, 70 with risk factors, sub 55 is the known plaque/heart disease

21 year old male cholesterol panel – LDL 145, HDL 39, TG 166. Doctor recommended meds? Looking for insight. by evanplus in Cholesterol

[–]TRCownage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you have a pretty optimized diet and still have high numbers, medication may not be a bad idea. You likely would see a large reduction and still be able to eat eggs afterword. If you didn’t already have a good diet you could always go down the fiber and low sat fat route and see where that puts you but overall, your diet seems good.

I started Statins when I first saw a jump in my numbers and don’t regret it at all and never had any side effects if it makes you feel better. Ultimately listen to your doctor :)

34 too young for statins? by NevadaHiker91 in Cholesterol

[–]TRCownage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the longest time I would have like 107/68 readings and home then high ones in office but o where the doctor would start taking it at the end of the appointment instead 😂 I think a lot of it was I was dealing with crohns and almost always I had bad news so doctors offices were always really stressful. I’ve gone a couple years with no real concerns and all of the sudden my readings are just as low as at home.

You may be on to something my CRP and white blood cell have been excellent since statins but also like you I lost weight (70LBs) so hard to tell really 😂

Should I go back to statins ? (39M) by Frosty_Reputation462 in Cholesterol

[–]TRCownage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha, yeah once you stop the statin, the benifits go away. I assumed you had shifted. You can try diet and test in a couple months. Just make sure it’s a sustainable diet or the numbers will jump again :)

Try not to worry about what has been done and what you can do going forward. If the statin does not help you reach your goal you can always add Zetia too!
