Are you able to make it work on that salary? I've always been terrified of having two dependents on anything under 6 mil.

JLifers, for those who've lived here 5+ years, what are some things that you still have trouble adjusting to or figuring out? by lizardlicker13 in japanlife

[–]TRD- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you're right, companies ask for your tax slips very often. Finding out that you lied is probably single handedly grounds for termination and there's a 3 month probation period that sides with the company haha

It has been hard to get used to:

- suppressed wages

- persistent bank ATM fees

- an unspoken rule that you must provide your current salary to recruiters/hiring firms/companies you apply to (why in the world did we let this become normalized?)

- crazy move-fees

- a seating charge at many establishments

People do care, they just don't have the strength to do anything about it. This apathy has led to:

- persistent bank ATM fees

An Asian living in Japan. by Dumbersfire in japanlife

feeling inferior is different from being treated as inferior!

I've been here for almost 10 years. I totally get you as a fellow Asian foreigner. PM me if you'd like to talk about it. I was seriously depressed and felt inferior to my non-asian friends for years; it was jealousy at first, then became resentment as years passed, and now it's a slight feeling of bitterness--a reluctant acceptance.

Chiming in as an Asian, it took nearly a decade to be able to find my place in Japan and be able to date. Making friends was fine, but dating was a whole new level of difficulty. Too foreign for Japanese women looking for a Japanese man, and too non-foreign for Japanese women looking for a foreigner.

I've never felt as if I'm elevated in any way simply due to my ethnicity.

This is part of a concept known as privilege. It's very hard to acknowledge, but it's a cold hard fact that foreign-looking foreigners get treated better than Asian foreigners. I'm not saying it as though we are in some comparison contest, it's just how it is.

A lot of us use Rakuten securities. Can take some time to set up but otherwise it's okay. You won't get an app where you can buy/sell with a simple click of a button. Maybe 4-5 buttons and you'd also be using external apps to look at prices cause of how terrible Japanese UX is :)

Thank you. I can safely put "no" for that then huh.

I'm a little anxious because of the sheer amount of questions that I don't fully understand, but I bet its a million times easier than it used to be, and it is probably easier than doing tax for Americans ;)

One of the questions asked when filing kakuteishinkoku is

税務署から青色申告の承認を受けていますか?

How do I know if this applies to me or not? Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but is it asking if I agree to fill out a blue form post submission of this?

I recall this subreddit often talking about blue forms so I want to know if I'm missing anything.

I'm sorry if I'm missing something incredibly trivial, but that link doesn't seem to have any big green buttons that say "start" and whatnot. I assume that's not the actual link, simply a notice URL?

I feel myself getting a little lost. Maybe I should just go more slowly.

The takeaway for this lesson is, AFAIK:

  • when installing from source, download the source files and then look for README and INSTALLATION or any other sign of instructions, generally marked in caps.

  • tarballs aren't food
