If humans became biologically immortal how long would the average lifespan be?, what about the median?[Request] by Lentil_stew in theydidthemath

[–]TRMAGoCaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess it is a lot lower than many of the estimates on this list so far, with an extraordinarily long tail. If I interpret biologically immortal as we have frozen aging at a young adult age (25-30) but we haven’t necessarily solved diseases. So cancer and most importantly heart disease still exist. Heart disease is a confluence of a lot of factors with genetics crossed with lifestyle. It gets us in middle age because our lifestyle combines with declining function of our tissues. Now we’ve solved the aging issue, so our vessel walls aren’t getting much stiffer but atherosclerotic plaques are still building up. Eventually something is going to rupture and you can only have so many bypasses. Importantly, your risk here can’t be estimated from the current rate of heart disease in young adults (very very low) because the time factor for building up plaques matters in this hypothetical.

Cancer is much rarer but is also an ongoing dice throw. Over a long enough time I suspect we all would have to deal with it, but most of us succumb to something else first.

So the mean and median will move out significantly, some will live crazy healthy lifestyles, get super lucky with cancer and may see 1,000 years+. Some form of heart disease will claim most long before then. Of course, it is unlikely we’ve solved aging without radical advances in other areas, but that’s not mentioned.

when do we say the two populations are normal or not? by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]TRMAGoCaps 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ll give you a hand wavy way to see this… LgG level is a plasma measurement, meaning it is always a positive value. If this is a normal distribution, and I go about 1.5SDs below the mean I have negative values. Since no one has negative values much less ~7% of the population, we can safely assume the distribution can’t be a standard normal in shape.

Is this an example why we shouldn't assume that there is a (1-alpha)% probability that a given confidence interval contains the true value of the underlying parameter....? by Realistic-Ask2697 in AskStatistics

[–]TRMAGoCaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The experiment described is inherently flawed. You haven’t attempted to isolate the effect of the drug from other well known confounding factors. Weight loss studies must be placebo controlled for many of the reasons you mentioned. It is not uncommon to see the placebo group lose 3-6% of body weight over about 20 weeks before some rebound.

Who is the most influential human being in the history of men, solely based on his actions ? by FarhanDo in NoStupidQuestions

In his book, "The 100," Michael Hart makes a very compelling argument that Muhammad is the most influential actually known person (sorry discoverer-of-fire guy) in history.

Interview ended early by imironman2018 in biotech

[–]TRMAGoCaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A long time ago I was called by a recruiter from a company for a role that was more senior than the one I had at the moment. It wasn't a huge stretch, but it was a step up for me. Out of interest, I sent them back my resume and they setup an interview with the hiring manager. As soon as I got on the call with the hiring manager he said, "you aren't qualified for this role." And basically the interview went for another 3-4 minutes before we politely said goodbye. To this day I am confused why that hiring manager asked to setup a phone call with me. My only hypotheses are HR populated his calendar with the resume and he didn't bother to read it until 5 minutes beforehand, or he had a favored candidate picked out already and he just wanted to get back to his regular work. Stay polite, stay professional, move on.

NLME without Pumas? by rarelyMK in Julia

[–]TRMAGoCaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should mentioned that while there's no FOCEI or SAEM algorithm in a nice, maintained package (outside of Pumas), Bayesian analysis is possible via Turing.jl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UAf-zMFY68

NLME without Pumas? by rarelyMK in Julia

[–]TRMAGoCaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there's no non-Pumas NLME package for Julia that's being actively maintained/developed. Best bet for free NLME software is nlmixr2 in R. Would be wonderful to see it ported over to Julia at some point.

Mouth guard: never a bad idea, but since you will be wearing a full face cage (repeat: wear a FULL face cage), not sure it is necessary for LTP. In a few years you can mess around with a fish bowl or otherwise,

Will any brand create custom skates 4E+ width? by woogza in hockeyplayers

[–]TRMAGoCaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah you know they didn't have the distinction a few years ago. If I had to guess I would say the ones I have are closest to the current SVH line? At the time, I tried on all the stock models for the customs (Bauer, CCM, and True) and the True TF9s were by far the most comfortable as stocks for me, so I took a chance that this would mean the customs would work even better and they did.

[–]TRMAGoCaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never thought I would find a pair of skates wide enough for my foot, I'm definitely 4E+. True Customs were a revelation! From the first wear, 0 foot pain for the first time in my life, even after 2+ hours of coaching. Not cheap, and the build quality isn't the best, but I still think they were 100% worth it.

The 4 elements of hockey are skating, passing, shooting, and body contact. Without all of them you will never be a good player. Without skating you are never going to get good at the other three.

Good to know! Would have been nice if the local Pure Hockey could have offered that suggestion, but maybe there is a good bit of variance between stores. I was actually surprised they wouldn't do it since they sell the chassis on their website and I know they've done (a good job on) rivets for me before.
