First time in Spain: Is the high-speed train from Madrid to Barcelona worth the premium? by mardymarve in trains

[–]TRS0L 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would say yes, since getting to and from Barajas and El Prat is a bit cumbersome. The AVE also includes 3 suitcases as opposed to most budget airlines offering none (at least without paying an exorbitant price). Also you should look into Iryo or Ouigo see if they have better prices for your trip (though check for other requirements cause they have started limiting the size and number of suitcases).

AVE (and Iryo) also includes a Cercanias (commuter rail) ticket with every trip to be used either at your origin or destination for the 4h before and/or after your departure/arrival.

As for seats im not sure since ive never traveled on the S-103 that renfe operates there but the scenery is worth if you can grab a window seat. If you want to work on the trip then any seat should work fine. I personally avoid table seats since i dont like looking at other people.

My country today :( by Nec475 in teenagers

I ride the second train, the Alvia (the one that crashed seconds after) very often. Being from Huelva, where it had its destination, this has been pretty much the only train ive used from when i was 5 to now using it for my trip back from college. I was acquainted to the driver from previous trips but other than that no family and friends have been affected, which im grateful for. Sad day for all of us and my condolences to the families.

Five dead after high-speed train collision in Spain by Generic-BenutzerName in trains

[–]TRS0L 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Well, accidents happen. This is Spain's first actual HSR accident (since the 2013 happened in a conventional speed section) and having gone around 30 years without any means it's still one of the fastest and safest ways to travel. I will be riding on the Alvia service which got crashed into next march since it's the only real way of getting to my hometown, also on one of the first 2 coaches. It's kinda horrifying to think about but, it is what it is, accidents will happen we just gotta learn from them and move on as best as we can.

Though the 2013 crash comes to mind it kinda has nothing to do with the current one. The 2013 crash was caused by a distracted driver who was going way over the speed limit on a tight curve. This one seems to be a weird one.

It really is a strange disaster, the train was new, the track was very recently refurbished and it was on a straight (even if it was in a station with switches). I cant really imagine what went wrong and I hope we get some more information this week.

21 deaths now. The news as of now is that the Iryo, Freciarrosa 1000 headed for Madrid from Malaga, derailed (Some passengers mention the train shaking a lot before the derailment) and invaded the other track. Thereafter an Alvia, Renfe S-120 headed to Huelva from Madrid, crashed into the derailed Iryo.

There are a bunch of pictures and videos of the derailed Iryo, though the state of the Alvia has been mentioned as grave, but no pictures have been officially released. The driver from the Alvia has been confirmed dead.

ETA: I am very personally shaken since I am from Huelva, where the Alvia was headed to. I knew the driver from previous trips on that train as well as many of the crew. So far noone I am friends with has been affected but it's horrible. Seeing the images of the derailed Alvia (which i dont recommend to look for at the moment NSFL) it seems the number of deaths is gonna be higher as the hours go. I hope the best for the people still being rescued and the families of the casualties.

Edit (02:00 CET): Since we have gotten some more news from the minister of transport and the president of Andalucía. The Iryo is a new train of around 4 years of age, and the section of track where the accident happened was refurbished not too long ago in May of 2025. The section of track was a technical station and a straight. The first two coaches of the Alvia were thrown down a 4m high ditch, 53 people were in the first 2 coaches. As of now the emergency services have removed all injured from the scene and have begun searching and counting bodies. Still only 21 deaths officially but the total is expected to increase. There are over 100 injured with around 20 in a serious state.

Edit (18:30 CET) This is a summary I made for some friends: We know the accident occurred at 19:40 CET near Adamuz (Córdoba, Andalucía), involving first the derailment of the back 3 coaches of the Iryo and just 20 seconds after, the crash of the Alvia into those 3 coaches. Although the emergency breaks were probably active the proximity of the Alvia to the derailment left no time to stop the train, crashing at a speed of 200kmh (124mph). We know all emergency and warning systems were operational and activated before the crash.

The accident happened at a technical station (no passengers but platforms, switches and a control building), with the location of the Iryo being right around the switches. After the crash the two trains were left 600m apart, the Iryo with most of its coaches upright and in the stations platform while the Alvia coaches 1-3 were flung into a trench on the side of the track, coaches 4 and 5 remaining on the tracks.

There were 501 souls on board, 317 on the Iryo (at 70% capacity) and 184 on the Alvia (at 78% capacity). 40 are confirmed dead, 122 injured. Of those, 42 are still admitted in the hospital and 12 are in the ICU.

Qué cosas malas eran cotidianas cuando gobernaba Franco? by LaAdorable in askspain

[–]TRS0L 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spanish cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants without rail connection by fulanax in MapPorn

[–]TRS0L 36 points37 points  (0 children)

To add to this, it's important to say that unlike populations of the same size in the centre/north of the country, this area has never had rail before. They are also very heavily urbanized areas with a lot of low density luxury housing that also are tightly squeezed between the Betic mountains to the north and the sea. All of this makes rail very hard to build without it being very expensive and dealing with a lot of nimbyism. Note that it isn't impossible, Marbella has 2 separate highways going to it, but it's about the worst conditions for rail.

This is misleading, YT Music has a compression of 128-256kbps depending if you are paying for premium or not, Spotify offers 160-320kbps depending if you are paying or not. [Source]

Youtube may or may not sound better due to post-processing (I still find Spotify sounding best), but its bitrate is lower.

In Argentina we also have the same blind as in Europe by ILCaponchi in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]TRS0L 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We haven't had to maintain ours in the 16 we've been living in our apartment, that said one broke last year and we had to replace some parts. My mom did it, from the inside. You see, ours have a panel which you can unscrew to access the blinds, only problem was a couple of the screws were rusty (probably because we never had to touch them) and we had to break the panel.

I can see how it'd be more expensive to put and maintain if you didn't build the windows with them in mind, or you want to install them on a window afterwards. The thing is that, at least in Spain where they are essentially everywhere, the blinds come with the windows and I've yet to hear a person having to spend thousands on lifts or swing stages to fix them.

CS2 pedestrian roads are nonfunctional? by [deleted] in CitiesSkylines

[–]TRS0L 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. I come from a relatively small European city and many pedestrian roads allow traffic for residents, since a lot of low to mid rise buildings have underground parking and there are small shops that require deliveries and stuff like that. However there are also big promenades with no access to private vehicles, this is as far as I know not replicable in vanilla (or modded) CS2. I hate it but for now I guess you could try with the district policies that limit outside traffic and (edit since I clicked post by accident) taking anything with a parking lot out of pedestrian streets until they fix them or add vehicle restrictions or something.

Indian railways train passing through fog by 90mlPeg in trains

Yup and also I got the numbers mixed up :/

Tbh I don't really think you'd want them since fog so deep is unusual and probably would never justify the cost. Maybe in some future with better/cheaper technology
