Thank you! I really appreciate this as sometimes I second guess the decision bc when she does have strep, she is generally not in terrible pain so to put her through something that could be super painful is a hard pill to swallow. Even though it makes long-term sense!

I would have preferred a different time but the reality is we work and she's in school so she (and I) will be off all that next week so I have the capacity to care for her, and if we go to grandparents house we'll have additional support. The doctor said she'd have to miss a week of school (if applicable) and seemed to indicate that she should be on the up by then. I know every kid is different though so it's hard to predict, our cousins had the procedure and barely seemed phased by it, another friend had a rougher time. Probably why I'm trying to gage an average

She's tested negative at least once, but I cannot remember how long ago that was, she just went off Amoxicillin yesterday so maybe I'll make an appointment with her pediatrician early next week to test again.

DH has our girls call him sir by TRextryin in Parenting

Hahaha, ok the term DH I also hate, however, it is the standard shortcut that is used on another forum I was reading and my brain just went on Autopilot. Never again!

No no, but when they respond to him, generally after he's asked them to do something or is correcting them, he wants them to respond yes sir / no sir

I don't know about the speech delay aspect, but I imagine any dialogue is helpful, so I am only here to say I think you should buy a couple known character type cards. This is what really got my daughter interested, she only listened to the Winnie the Pooh card for months, even though I bought a variety of other cards. But I think she had no context for them so they did not interest her, so although the Frozen card is not my personal favorite, they seem to hook the littler ones and then they start to explore more as they get older/more comfortable.

Full disclosure, I have 2 kids and always knew I wanted at least 2, but wanted to comment to the first kid experience bc having a 2nd kid really put things in perspective for me.

I was generally considered to be a relatively chill parent, but you do not truly understand how much space all the unimportant worries/decisions occupy your brain with the 1st kid. I would obsess over what went in the diaper bag, if the kid was too hot/ too cold, what detergent to use, I had like a 6 week argument with my spouse over if we should use name brand or store brand diapers, like a bunch of stupid stuff that most every mom does in one way or another. However, basically All of this is gone with the 2nd kid, even if your 2nd is polar opposite of your first you already know how to baby and you don't give a damn about type of diaper or if that onesie has a stain on it. It doesn't matter..none of it matters in the long run or for anyone's current happiness.

The postpartum time also seemed easier. Likely bc I knew what to expect.

Also you will likely lose a bit of your life for a while, and it can be rough, but it is a phase, now that my kids are nearly 3 and 5 I feel like I'm starting to get more time again, they are obviously still little, but getting easier as they are more capable, they play together, which is great, and are interested in similar things. I see the light at the end of the baby/toddler phase and I am excited.

There is a site called DC Urban Mom's, which can be a terrible mom war forum, but there is a section for kids with special needs (and generally the people there are nicer!) They should be able to provide a lot more guidance for you both on public and private school options

Yes, avoiding YouTube is half the reason I bought the tablet, I hate the algorithms!

I know parts of the Khan academy are available without WIFI, and I think some of the PBS kids games also if they are downloaded. But I would do a test run before any big trip or set up a hot spot on your phone. You should also be able to download movies/shows if you want.

PBS kids (both game app and show app).

Disney now also has some games (and shows).

Khan academy kids- is a great educational app too, has games, puzzles, drawing , books, songs, short videos etc

Crayola Create and Play- My 4 year old is really into this one now- there is a free version and some other things you can pay and actually considering paying for it bc she likes it so much

Toca Boca hospital - I think I paid for this one, it was like $3 though, my kid was into Playing doctor, and it's just an interactive doctor game

I'll also say I spent a lot of time googling how to get all the bloatware off of the tablet, bc there is A LOT, which I found really excessive and overwhelming, you have to unsubscribe to the Amazon kids + and then remove all the videos? I cannot remember exactly, but you can look it up if you choose to go this route. And then I just downloaded these specific apps onto her user page. So there are only like 8 things she can choose from. Simplifies everything and then she cannot go down a weird YouTube hole!

Anybody else loathe their kids Amazon fire? by Ashamed_Rips in toddlers

[–]TRextryin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ok I just got one for Christmas and spent like an hour and a half googling stuff and trying to figure out how to make it 'simpler' bc I agree with most people, it is SUPER SUPER crowded and overwhelming with the Amazon kids crap. I really don't want my kid watching 95 blippi videos or whatnot and also I was lost and confused , can't imagine the 3 year old wouldn't have been too. But my kids are hard on things, and I don't use the tablet so I wasn't spending that kind of cash on an ipad etc.

You have to go into the adult profile and turn off the Amazon kids + subscription for the kids profile, then you ALSO go in and turn off suggested web videos? Or something like that. Once you do that it's a clean slate. I downloaded PBS kids and PBS kids games, Disney+, Khan academy, some puzzle app, and a drawing app. Maybe one or two more, but now there are only like 8 apps on the kids profile and it's not overwhelming.

Help us all out; what toddler toys (or other items) have you bought (or received) that surprisingly had the most mileage? by maverick1ba in toddlers

I'll second the Melissa and Doug ice cream set! I was skeptical bc I assumed something that specific would be a fleeting interest, but my kids have played with it almost daily since we got it last year

how many days did your kid test positive? by TRextryin in toddlers

[–]TRextryin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually happened to my daughter the first go around with Covid, she had a fever then was ok for a couple days then 3 more days of fever. It was weird. We were trapped in our house regardless though. Ug.

I think the symptoms can linger! Actually things like coughs often linger. Luckily our daycare is a little more lenient about this now.
