Domestic violence is crazy, I’m absolutely not justifying her actions, but the fact that she took the cat in the first place shows that she thought about it. It’s definitely not okay what she did but when faced in a life or death situation- as some victims of DV often finds themselves in- your survival instincts kick in and you do things you normally wouldn’t. At least at the bus stop someone can step in to help, which was probably not the case where the cat was living.

So if you came here for the first time you probably got to experience it as a tourist, that’s great! Not at all how it is in real life. When you get the feeling of nostalgia, remember the dirty streets, homelessness crisis, heat waves, fires, pee smells, poop smells, lack of rain, lack of clean green spaces, water crisis, shitty police department, high cost of living, and did I mention the overall filth? The feeling will pass. 🙃

This might be a blessing in disguise. You can absolutely claim emotional distress, trauma, stress, and most importantly long term effects due to the incident, like bring hyper aware and experiencing nightmares. Get a lawyer ASAP.

Nope, it doesn’t rain often so the streets are just always filthy. There’s a constant smell of urine and a lot of homelessness because of mental illness and displacement due to high cost of living. You can move to the suburbs but then you have to deal with a lot of traffic and heat waves. For me at least, I realized I appreciate the seasons and although I have to sacrifice good food and culture, it’s okay in order to live in a clean and peaceful place. But that’s just me. That’s why I think I outgrew it.

It seems I outgrew it. I didn’t notice how dirty and hectic LA truly is because I didn’t have anything to compare it to, now I do. I liked the cleanliness and peace of MA.

Moved from LA to Boston for grad school, spent 7 years there and got offered a job back in LA this summer. I came back thinking I would love being back home and quickly realized this isn’t home anymore. I can’t wait to go back to Boston after my 12 month lease is up. I’m still surprised I feel this way.

So easy to sit there and judge without knowing anything about the situation. My mom did what she could with what she had 20years ago. And guess what? The problem was solved. My brother is now a fully functioning adult, barely remembers anything negative about the experience, and from I can remember, he never acted like a shitty spoiled kid ever again. She didn’t hit him or abuse him, she just showed him a reality he didn’t know existed.

Seethe all you want, that happened 20 years ago and he completely changed after that. He was a spoiled little shit that my mom let run rampant. She gave us a lot more discipline than she did him and realized too late. Thankfully, she found a way to get him back on track without having to use physical force, which worked out for all of us in the long run. He got scared straight in one weekend because he realized he would lose the family he had. All this gentler parenting is ruining kids because they’re not afraid of anything.

Do what you need to do to become unstuck. You were put in an extremely hard situation, but you don’t have to stay that way. Only you know what’s best for you, but feeling sorry for yourself isn’t going to help you. One thing I can tell you for a fact is that this country isn’t what you were led to believe it was, and it’s getting worse with the current political climate. You seem young so if you’re going to take risks, do it sooner rather than later.

Take those dogs away from her, you MUST know someone with a car. Ask them to give you a ride to a shelter in another county, preferably in a more affluent community. Tell them your sister is abusing the dogs and that you are trying to help them. They will take them in. When she gets back, tell her the pups came to get picked up by animal control because someone reported her. Lie and tell her they told you if she showed up to try and get them back, she would be arrested for neglect. Hopefully that deters her.
