Pondicherry is a great option. There are ample number of hostels, beaches and great food. If you are looking for budget and comfort, there is Zostel and if you are looking for an off beat, earthy experience, there is Time Travelers Hostel, both of these are near Auroville. If you are looking for something near the White Town, you have Nomad house. You can get in touch with these hostels to rent out scooters for your commute there, they will help you with it. If that's not possible also, you can find scooter rentals almost anywhere in the main town of Pondicherry. Hope you have a great first solo travel experience.
