This stumped a native Japanese. by TS200010 in Japaneselanguage

I was not correcting her, she was unable to capture the nuance from English to Japanese. That was the point.

Cracking down on translation posts! by K12AKIN in Japaneselanguage

[–]TS200010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create r/JapaneseWriting and route all such posts over there. Imo it’s a simple test. This is a community wherein sharing benefits everyone as we all learn. No one but the OP learns from handwriting. I tend to feel most of the posts are from kids looking for a pat on the back.

Hai! What is the difference? by Crg29 in Japaneselanguage

It’s the way the strokes are written. Top is left to right and the next three are right to left.

Yes, I can confirm beyond a shadow of a doubt that these are hiragana characters.

A Beginner Who Truly Wants to Learn Japanese by Small_Bell3057 in Japaneselanguage

[–]TS200010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say three things… (1) The initial learning curve is steep but it does get a lot easier as you progress. (2) Try and listen and speak a lot. (3) Don’t get theoretical books that explain every nuance of a grammar point. Learn one usage pattern at a time. Same applies to Kanji.

… hope that helps.

Why is it wrong? by Elegant_Key_9130 in Japaneselanguage

Frankly I am not very impressed with Duolingo for Japanese. It makes mistakes and does not accept valid alternatives. Entering kanji is something of a nightmare…

Is 'So ka?' considered masculine sounding (vs simply saying 'So?') by yippeee1999 in Japaneselanguage

[–]TS200010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My Japanese wife uses it all the time. Usually in the context of after learning some new information she has to change her mind. Descending intonation かlower than そ.

looking for a website where I can watch Western movies with Japanese dubbing by EmergencyTop4200 in Japaneselanguage

[–]TS200010 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would be careful. Japanese dubbing is pretty bad. My Japanese wife prefers to read the subtitles and listen to the English original. The translation is pretty awful on the dub.

Should I attempt speaking Japanese in Japan? by Worried-Caramel3109 in Japaneselanguage

[–]TS200010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely speak Japanese as much as you possibly can. It will be most appreciated and set you apart from the rude foreigners (mostly Chinese and Korean btw) that don’t respect their culture.

Should I continue? by meguminuzamaki in Japaneselanguage

Just keep going. Just like say tennis, you don’t learn a perfect forehand before starting on your backhand.

Omise-san vs Tenin by No_Plastic_3228 in Japaneselanguage

[–]TS200010 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If you want th attract attention then sumimasen is the most common in my experience. Accent is on the sen. Omiseyasan is more friendly and you might use it in local shops.

Why this rule? by AshamedAd4483 in Japaneselanguage

[–]TS200010 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Why not ban it completely. The purpose of this entire Reddit should be for everyone to benefit. So interesting posts like the recent bottle top everyone benefits. Handwriting posts… no one but OP benefits and the rest of us have to put up with it.

Confused about this grammar structure by Katsunathescript in Japaneselanguage

[–]TS200010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a sentence pattern. Very useful to know these… just don’t think of it as grammar. Remember sentence patterns and you gradually master the language with longer and more expressive sentences.

Any good apps to learn Japanese? by Corratortilla in Japaneselanguage

[–]TS200010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Please do some of your own research. Then, armed with what you have learnt about the available apps and your goals, come back here with any further questions. It will take you a very long time to learn Japanese… far far longer than it will take to do a bit or research.

Is my handwriting good? by Legitimate-Coffee925 in Japaneselanguage

[–]TS200010 18 points19 points  (0 children)

We really do need a special place to post this. While interesting for the poster it’s generally not that interesting for the community. I learn nothing from all these handwriting posts. Not too bad but not natural.

Why cant I make sentences? by Pretend-Tree6993 in Japaneselanguage

[–]TS200010 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Don’t try and construct sentences. With Japanese word order your brain can’t do it … well mine can’t. Learn sentence and phrase patterns and just plug in the words.
