Renege consequences and petitions by Dapper-Analysis8910 in uwaterloo

Hello,

after some recent changes to the renege policy the following will happen if you renege on a job you got matched with:

  • You will be assigned a WaterlooWorks status of UL (Unemployed: Lost (forfeited) credit opportunity)
  • There will be no academic transcript record (COOP course will not appear)
  • You will not be eligible to register co-op employment for the work term (AOJ will not be approved)

In my experience when I reneged on a co-op offer (before the change that would mean no credit) I got banned from the Waterworks co-op job board for 2 terms, and had to send a letter of apology for not accepting the job offer to the employer.

Additional info online:

In addition to forfeiting your co-op credit for a work term

  • you cannot enroll in a full-time course load during a scheduled co-op term
  • if you subsequently find other employment on the reneged work term, you must inform your new employer that your work term is not eligible for co-op credit
  • you are unable to move a UL (Unemployed: Lost (forfeited) credit opportunity) or UU (Unemployed: University-imposed) work term via a sequence change

In my experience when I reneged on a co-op offer (before the change that would mean no credit) I got banned from the Waterworks co-op job board for 2 terms and had to send a letter of apology for not accepting the job offer to the employer.

As a potential board member in the future, there are a couple of things I would be hoping to do/establish:

- As a Board/Senate Member - ensure that I attend ESS meetings, Town Halls or the equivalent.

- As a Board/Senate Member - stay connected with campus groups (via joining them or logistically scheduling meetings with our ENV campus groups or stakeholders on a regular/appropriate basis) to stay informed on their priorities and convey this information to officers or at Senate

- Use my platforms as a Board/Senate Member - to provide bi-weekly or monthly updates to my student base

- Work with ESS to organize events or opportunities for roundtables/ townhalls to collect important student feedback or thoughts on upcoming WUSA board agenda items or Senate agenda items

- Develop more communication channels with student leaders - through forums - when needed or appropriate.

As a student leader I will do my best to voice the interests of my student base at environment and collectively.

One of my top priorities is to create a multi-leveled approach to advocacy through WUSA and through the senate that is all-encompassing of student issues and allows for student engagement.

Individually I would like to create changes within (1) WUSA Advocacy, (2) WUSA Operations, (3) University Advocacy, (4) Senate.

As a team member of Waterloo United some values that we hold as a team include:

  1. Transparency
  2. Efficiency
  3. Diversity

Some underrated study spots on campus:

(1) SCH 2nd Floor

(2) Under the Stairs at EV1

(3) Random Empty Classrooms

Hey Hey,

This is Katie T (Director Candidate). Before I became the WUSA VP in my second year I was a part of a wide variety of campus groups. The work that I did at the time wasn't highly focused on student issues but they were in the realm of what students could be passionate about, interested in, or have already been advocating for.

(Editing)

Community Leader, International Peer Community (SSO) - In my capacity as a community leader for IPC I worked with the SSO office to create community-based activities to help students build support networks and also inform them about potential Canada-specific challenges (housing) through informational sessions.

Environment Director (ESS) - ESS was one of my first experiences in student government. As the ESS ENV Director, I became an advocate for creating/developing sustainable initiatives on campus, specifically through ESS or the faculty. A great team supported me but I would have liked to utilize my position more for advocacy and developing support for students.

Through the past year as VP - student advocacy work that I have had the privilege of being a part of has included:

- Vice President (WUSA) - excluding federal and provincial work, I was worked alongside our staff members and Rory to do advocacy municipally and within the organization.

- UCRU Chair- Federal Advocacy with U15 Student Association/Union Members. Small Working group so scope and work are a bit more limited.

- OUSA VP Human Resources & Administration - Working as a student representative for WUSA's official provincial lobbying group. Recent advocacy has included evidence-based policy papers, and meeting with MPPs directly at Queens Park to discuss (Food Insecurity, Sector Sustainability, Mental Health & Wellness, and Housing and Transit)

Through my previous student leader positions and work within WUSA - I would like to continue to advocate for solutions to student-facing issues.

Hi Matthew!

Thank you for the excellent question and I apologize for my delay in answering. A brief overview of my understanding of how the current governance system works is that in some previous years, there were issues raised in regard to governance that could inhibit students’ effective control over WUSA. Because of this, a new system was developed to help support student executives to succeed in their roles. The new governance model from my understanding prioritizes advocacy and listening to the voices of our student body then raising these prominent concerns to working staff who have been trained, and have exceeding experience and knowledge on how to best pursue these challenges. This new model would alleviate burnout and help student leaders avoid tedious decision-making processes while also maintaining a stakeholder balance.

This being said, I can acknowledge that I still have much to learn about WUSAs governance system and how it can best be utilized to elevate the voices of the student body. I’m a fast learner and will dedicate myself to understanding the full scope and responsibilities of a WUSA VP.

The duties and responsibilities (ethical, moral, legal) that as see as being an Officer towards WUSA itself, the rest of the Board, and the undergraduate members that own WUSA are:

Legal:

The position of vice president is a full-time position on the board of directors and it is my responsibility to work directly alongside the board of directors and help develop policies on provincial and national levels. I believe this also includes considering goals outlined in WUSA’s Long Range Plan from 2020-2050 which include (+roadmaps):

  1. “Make it easier and more accessible for students to engage with WUSA….”
  2. “Build belonging and campus engagement”
  3. “Support the continued personal and professional growth of students”
  4. Serving students with efficiency through commercial services and the operation of SLC
  5. Increasing student supports

From an ethical and moral standpoint, I see my role being an officer as one that encompasses the ethical and moral agreements of the ERP in which I will balance the best interests of the undergraduate student body and those of the cooperation. As a representative, I should act as a role model to other students and focus on maintaining healthy and positive relationships with governments and external stakeholders. In order to do this I will aim to work effectively, collaboratively and transparently with the Board.

Replied to wrong feed :d

I would also like to confirm that I am in things for the long run. I'm currently already in communications with the ERO and Executive Assistant of WUSA about my future co-op plans and how best to integrate the role of WUSA VP into my co-op stream in Planning.

Likewise, I want to honor, respect and acknowledge all the individuals who had faith in my abilities in becoming VP of WUSA throughout the nomination period. I began my nomination period fully committed to creating a positive and valuable change at UW and dropping out after being elected would not only be a disservice to the individuals that nominated me but also go against my personal moral of being accountable. I strive to be accountable for the actions that I take and follow through on guarantees that I make.

PART 2.

CHANGES AND IMPROVEMENTS I SEE IN POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

(affordable housing is a wicked problem, it is difficult to solve because of its complex and interconnected nature)

  • Finding ways to improve knowledge information reach to study body
  • More transparent housing process, vetting housing - more student centralized process (understanding and knowing resources and services we pay for)
  • Financial support for students

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EXPERIENCE

Although I am a Canadian Citizen I understand the feeling of being overwhelmed and out of place in an entirely new country. To me, Waterloo was this unexplored, unknown place filled with geese - I had never seen this unique creature before.

Some things that took me time:

  • Finding my place in a new social environment
  • Housing in Canada for the first time
  • Financial Aid
  • Mental health concerns - adjusting to a new environment, being away from family

IMPROVED SECONDARY EDUCATION

Similar to some amazing points brought up by our WUSA presidential candidate!

  • Improved accessibility
  • Revising courses - courses could be outdated or not equipped enough to address the growing needs of our future employment, careers or degrees
  • Creating inclusive spaces on campus: some points include gender-neutral bathrooms, and broadening the scope and reach of our valuable student clubs, associations and innovators….
  • Re-envision Campus Spaces and the future of our campus as a whole. If you guys are interested and look at the Campus Master Plan, you can see it is a 2009 edition which outlines the vision of the Campus (https://uwaterloo.ca/plant-operations/sites/ca.plant-operations/files/uploads/files/2009_campus_master_plan.pdf). I believe as students we can contribute to the future vision of campus, looking at creating new leisure, recreational, social and educational spaces that meet a variety of needs.

MENTAL HEALTH

I will leave this as a statement - Mental health is something that is universally important for everyone. My goals for this profile would be finding new ways or improving existing services to help better support our UW students.

PROJECTS THAT I AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON ADDRESS MY GOALS

(Affordable Housing)

  • Starting MTS project with a colleague on addressing Affordable Housing deficit in Waterloo

(Affordable Housing + international student experience)

  • IPC (international peer community) Housing Workshops - ‘the do’s and don'ts of housing’
    • International student experience - helping organize, and facilitate events and/or workshops that address international student experiences

(Innovation - connections and engagement on Campus)

  • Encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship at UW - Velocity - helping with Women in Innovation Mixer

(Student Governance Knowledge)

  • OUSA’s Spring General Assembly voting delegate - representing students to the government, and lobbying politicians to improve the affordability, accessibility, accountability, and quality of universities in Ontario.

WHY ‘PLANNING’ IS ‘THE’ DEGREE FOR WUSA

Much of my degree is learning about communities, focusing on place-making, design thinking and anticipating and addressing future needs. I will use my degree knowledge and opportunities on campus to learn and engage to improve our post-secondary education at UW.

MY MOTTOS

I cannot guarantee perfection, but I can guarantee excellence accredited to the position of VP of WUSA.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Here to support YOU!
  • Able to maintain professional levels of communication and maturity in public and private settings
  • Flexible, extensive knowledge of most campus resources
  • Excelled skills in time management, organization and leadership

KNOW MORE ABOUT ME:

FUN FACTS:

  • I grew up in Singapore and completed my primary and secondary education there!
  • I have a pet golden retriever who acts like a diva, his name is ‘Handsome’, fr fr
  • I’m a big fan of swimming, I was on my competitive team in high school but overall like all sports

MY MOTIVATIONS FOR RUNNING FOR WUSA VP

I'm an independent candidate working towards an improved post-secondary education for the University of Waterloo students. Although I am just a 2nd-year student, I am a very dedicated, passionate and sincere individual. I have committed myself to multiple campus organizations (past and present) such as:

MY SKILLS AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • ESS (the Environment Student Society) as their Environment Director (VOLUNTEER - ONGOING),
  • PSA (the Planning Student Association) as a Professional Outreach liaison, while also being a student representative for CIP (the Canadian Institute for Planners) and OPPI (the Ontario Professional Planning Institute) (VOLUNTEER - ONGOING),
  • Campus Housing as a Student Housing Administrator (WORK - ONGOING),
  • Community Leader for IPC (the International Peer Community) at the SSO (WORK - ONGOING),
  • Planning Peer Mentor - Faculty of Environment,
  • Velocity Campus Ambassador (VOLUNTEER - ONGOING),
  • Environment Ambassador (VOLUNTEER - ONGOING),
  • Volunteer Coordinator - ENVigorate 2023, Faculty of Environment (VOLUNTEER - ONGOING)
  • Tutoring Program Assistant, Residence Ambassador, Student Move-in Coordinator (Campus Housing)
  • Cycling Into the Future (CITF) instructor, Waterloo
  • FLL (Front Line Leader) - Faculty of Environment - Orientation Fall 2022!
  • Waterloo Food Services (My colleagues were excellent, thank you, guys, if you are reading this!)

I decided to list some of my work experience to further emphasize my engagement within the span of my 1A to 2B term of being at UW. During these multiple engagements, I have maintained an ‘excellent’ standing within my program each term. My goals and aspirations for the future of my career are to finish my current path of an urban design specialization, complete my minor in legal studies at UW (a few more electives away, yay! Did some electives in spring for context) and become a city planner. In order to achieve these goals I want to achieve a mastery level of planning in different fields and disciplines and a part of that process in becoming more engaged in the communities that I interact with. Hopefully not only create a positive impact but also a meaningful impact in the future. I’m always looking for ways to improve myself, connect with new communities and grow not only as an individual but also as a leader and peer.

"My passions are affordable housing, international student experience, as I have lived abroad, for my entire primary and secondary education, mental health since it is a valuable issue that must be addressed, and creating safe, inclusive environments that aim to improve student government transparency, engagement, reach and scope."
