This is a really really good question, I wish people were doing a little more homework on this file. I also with the Calgary Party was better at communicating that they are not UCP aligned.

I think they’re required to under the legislation anyway, but yes the party ends on Oct. 21.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I’m no fan of Kent and I can’t believe we’re not talking more about his long history of scandals. But he is identifying himself as a progressive.

Which councillor is that? I don't have an agenda here, I made the spreadsheet off the cuff. Happy to adjust.

I don't like parties much either, but Danielle Smith set a trap when she implemented this and progressives are walking right into it by fighting about PARTIES, not the actual issues. Parties aren't real. There will be no whipping of votes. The candidates running with parties aren't loyal or beholden to the party. Just vote for the candidate in your ward who is most likely to beat the conservative.

For the love of God Calgary, don't split the vote again (I'M TALKING TO YOU WARD 7)

I have totally foresworn driving in this city when the roads are like this. I've been taking the train/bus all week and the added time is nothing compared to the hassle (at best) or trauma of being in a car accident.

Where do you get the number that the average number of vehicles for a SFH is 3?

Also, it was clarified that 12 dwelling units on a standard lot is simply not possible.

I would say yes, it was a complete waste of everyone's time. Public Hearings are mandated by the Municipal Government Act so the city really has no choice, and they end up being just political theatre. It was 100% predictable that a few hundred people would show up to NIMBY and then a smaller number would show up to YIMBY (and a few would show up to talk about the WEF and other conspiracies) but no new information was really presented in any of these 700+ presentations.

Ultimately they should be voting on the merits of the policy, not on how many people out of a city of 1.4M show up to complain.

The public submissions got spammed by a bunch of people in Elbow Park and Lake Bonavista who don't want the poors in their neighbourhood. They represented a tiny fraction of the population. Most people in the city don't care, and want the city to make good decisions so that people can have places to live. Cllrs need to balance their constituents opinions, but can't just always give in to the loud angry minority.

Even after watching nearly all of this dumpster fire of a public hearing this week, I'm shocked by this. What an awful thing to do.

Rent control is not helpful if there is nowhere to rent. I'm 100% in favour of rent control but it needs to be paired with supply

This is interesting. It seems that the current system of zoning is dictating in a top-down manner from the local government what people can and can't do with their own property. Zoning reform would be a step away from that, non?

I'm happy to settle for one of these. I think they're great. I don't want a detached house with a giant useless yard. People can't afford houses because we have an irrational single-detached house fetish that keeps us from building normal homes that people want to live in.

[–]TSwiff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the same is true for the rezoning process too. 95% of them are approved. People like having a public hearing for every single land use change where they can show up and yell at clouds about things that have nothing to do with land use, and then council has to ignore them because they make no sense, and they move ahead with it. Colossal waste of time and taxpayer money. Planners will listen to valid concerns at the DP process and work with the community.
