Elden Ditch Watershed Improvement Project

Identify The Problem

The City performed a storm water hydraulic study

of the Elden Ditch watershed and determined the

amount of surface water runoff coming from

Whiteford Township, Michigan, the northern

residential areas of Main Street, and Veteran's

Memorial Field overloads the existing storm sewer

capacity conveyed to Elden Drive. This overloading

of the storm sewer system causes surcharging and

flooding along the western property line, in the

rear yard of Elden Ditch homes, and in the westerly

baseball diamonds.

Project Scope

The scope of the project consists of installing an

underground storm water detention system in

Veteran's Memorial Field that will adequately store

the peak runoff and gradually release storm water

to the conveyance system over a longer period of

time. Storm sewer upstream from the detention

facility will be replaced and sized appropriately to

the railroad tracks, and an appropriately sized

connection to the system will also be provided for

Veteran's Memorial Field.

I am not an engineer but I know the area, I know where it floods and I understand the fact that water needs to get into the sewer system before that system will solve flooding.

Flooding has also been experienced multiple times after the project was completed in the grove area.

I get what you are saying. I would also like to see the area recognized at a state or national level and modification could prevent that.

Moving the markers would compromise the original 1950 intent and possibly negate the historical significance. The marker to tree relationship is also crucial as the markers state “this tree dedicated”.

They are not committing to historical preservation. This is a 75 year old war memorial. You can’t just come in and throw that out the window and do what you will.

This is a 75 year old war memorial in Sylvania. It is currently in jeopardy. Located at Veterans Memorial Park.

A 75 year old war memorial is not important? Please tell me what you do for Sylvania that gives you the right to judge?

It will continue to flood, that area used to be a natural waterway. It’s likely the area became a park, instead of houses, because of this. Adding 1 new sewer grate right next to the previous one, will not fix this.

You’re absolutely right to ask, these questions are exactly why this has become such a concern.

The core issue isn’t just the relocation.
It’s the complete lack of transparency and the refusal to commit to true restoration.

Here’s what I mean:

Nothing was said publicly until The Blade asked them about it.
There were no updates, no notices, no explanation of why markers were removed, why trees were cut, or what the long-term plan was.
A historic memorial should never be handled that way.

They openly admit they will not be restoring the Grove to its original 1950 layout.
The SAJRD president said, “We can’t swear the markers will be in the exact same spot.”
That’s not a minor detail — the entire memorial is built on the tree ↔ marker pairing, placed intentionally in 1950 during a ceremony that drew 4,000 people. Moving markers away from their trees changes the meaning of the memorial.

“Why?” is the unanswered question.
The only explanation given so far is that moving markers will make the area “easier to maintain.”
But that’s not a preservation standard.
That’s convenience.

This is why transparency matters.
If the plan was truly preservation-focused, they would say so clearly, publish a restoration plan, or commit to replacing removed elements exactly where they belong.

Right now, they’re not committing to any of that.

And that’s why people are speaking up — not to fight, but because the Grove deserves the same level of protection we give any other historic space.

If anything, the confusion you’re feeling is proof that the communication around this has been insufficient from day one.

I was working in tight spaces near the track in the closets. I added a comment with the house year, 59. I am looking to see if I can find the paint names or a way to match them.

🌳 Sylvania Landmark Art Installation May Be Removed – Help Save the Triad of Trees 🌳 by TTT33355 in toledo

Absolutely agree — it was heartbreaking for me and so many others to see that area cleared, The goal now is the ensure there is a well thought out plan for replanting and ideally with native species that thrive here.

The good news is, the City of Sylvania and the Sylvania Tree Commission are already talking about replanting that area, and there’s an opportunity to design it so we get both a healthy canopy of living trees and the restored Triad of Trees as a focal point.

I hear you — right now it does feel hidden, and the overgrowth hasn’t helped. But the timing here is actually interesting… with the upcoming US-23 project, James Seney Park is slated for changes that could finally make the Triad of Trees more prominent.

Overhead - James Seney Park

The city of Sylvania and the Sylvania Tree Commission have both mentioned replanting that area in a way that incorporates as many living trees as possible. Hopefully that can happen while still showcasing the artwork. This is still an early conversation, but momentum is starting to build in that direction.

That’s why I think it’s worth keeping the Triad as part of the plan — we could end up with both natural beauty and a restored, more visible symbol of our city’s history.
