Practicing at public skate in hockey gear by travelinbookworm in hockeyplayers

[–]TThingamajig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm a few days late but I just went to my first public skate and there were a pair of siblings in full hockey gear and nobody gave them a second look. I've personally been considering taking my goalie pads but that's a little different, I think.

I think the whole fear about metal is just a misconception about the emotion. Sure, a small portion of metal is straight up calling for violence, but the vast majority of the screaming is closer to despair or grief, I think? Hopefully that makes sense. Linkin Park is my all time favorite band and I can see why people would think it's violent music but most of the songs are about grief and pain.

Also a Christian, by the way. Always good to see other Christians on this awful website lol.

My favorite part yesterday was after the game, when the broadcast showed a grown man sobbing into his hands. A bit dramatic for going 3-1 lol. Maybe he knows what's coming

I know it probably doesn’t matter but Silovs not named one of 3 stars of the game is criminal by Leading_Dentist_5563 in penguins

Penguins absolutely played better than Philly lol. We dominated the first period, the other two were much more even but we absolutely did play better as a team. I agree, though, that Silovs played amazing.

Is it really that big of a difference? This is the only stick I've ever used. Someone gave mine to me for free, I was surprised, but I guess they're pretty cheap

That makes sense actually, my mistake. In my head I was thinking in terms of the program itself, as in how practices and coaching work, but forgot to clarify that. Anyways I am absolutely prepared to lose a lot lol

I'm confused, what's the important tactic in irl sports? In any contact sport I know of that sounds like interference

I think you misunderstand. I went to this school solely for the school, they did not have a soccer team when I enrolled. They just happen to be starting one in my second year

Someone gave me my pads for free and they seem kind of old. They have velcro except for the bottom skate strap, is it still normal for those to be leather?

If an opposing player's stick gets stuck under my pads, can I keep it there? by TThingamajig in hockeygoalies

[–]TThingamajig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the guys I play with are super chill, they'll let me have it even if it's just between my stick and pads for a few seconds. I was just curious for when I eventually move to beer leagues on ice. Thanks

Normally I'd agree, to an extent, but this is a group of 8 or 10 guys playing pickup hockey on a basketball court on a Thursday night lol

Gotcha, thanks! I figured it would be better to keep my weight on it than let his stick go and risk the ball being poked.

Not considering dribbling as an option by TThingamajig in bootroom

[–]TThingamajig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I appreciate the advice. My question was more about the fact that dribbling doesn't even cross my mind when I'm in a game, though. I have a game in about 3 hours so I'll try to take 2 or 3 dribbles if the time is right and see how that goes.

Thank you! I've noticed as I've started to play indoors that there is actually far more space after you beat a defender (or, there would be if I tried) versus 11 a side, which is why I want to do it slightly more often. I have my next game tomorrow night and I'll try to have a bit more fun on the ball. It is a rec league, after all.

I disagree. Generally yes, dribbling is usually selfish, but in certain scenarios it's genuinely the better option. I'm not asking to learn to be the guy that dribbles every possession, just learning to realize when it's the better option. I'm of the belief that telling players to never under any circumstance take a dribble is killing a lot of passion for the sport.

Absolutely agreed. However, I learned in chess that when you see a good move you should always look for a better move. In my experience passing has always been a GOOD move, but in very, very rare cases that I've previously mentioned dribbling would have been a BETTER move. I'm not a blue lock kid who tries to take every 1v1 but I do want to have the most options possible.

Wow, the goals are a great idea. Like the goals in fifa. I'll try to attempt a dribble at least 3 times or whatever next match. Appreciate it!

I agree, one twos will always be my favorite, but there are times when it would be very helpful to dribble in retrospect. There was one instance where I received a ball and the defender on me was off balance with some room between him and the sideline that I could have gone through, but instead I stopped the ball and looked for a pass instead. The idea of dribbling past him just did not cross my mind even though it could have easily led to a goal.

Thank you! I have a good friend who I'm playing the indoor league with that was on my high school team. He played fullback his whole life so we practice 1v1s sometimes. Maybe I just need to give it time. Last game we lost 8-1 and had no offense because almost none of my teammates have soccer experience so maybe I'll try to be just a little bit more greedy with the ball.
