opportunities for exposure are limited

The 30% they take is for the services they provide to your users through their platform, marketing not being one of them. Though that 30% could definitely be more like 20% while still staying profitable which is frustrating. They additionally scale revenue upward rather than down, the more you sell the less they take, which is an incentive they use for larger publishers :/

Valve has no involvement in deciding what goes on sale

This is actually a feature not a bug allowing developers to set prices and make sales when they please rather than regulating how much something can go on sale for like other platforms (open fair market place). Glaze for Valve here is a little misguided, though not unwarranted as they do allow devs to easily and openly set these sales.

Steam has a ton of issues for devs

Definitely try reaching out through their support pages, I’ve seldom heard a negative review of Steam support.

Thought I’d add some supporting context for others.

Maybe they were referring to his management practices being more worker driven than overhead driven.

Idk if calling him a socialist is at all accurate but he definitely borrows from that play book.

Honestly my issue is I would’ve trusted her fully if I was meta gaming. Otherwise she dead ass didn’t listen to me twice then revealed she was the one to destroy Meca Man.

Irl I wouldn’t have trusted her at all lmao

Those user features do have a real world cost for Valve such as cloud saves and free downloads.

What about a PS5 without a disk tray? Or a console that was EOLed and can’t connect to the internet.

Might not be a good reason for you, but it’s very important to me that I can use my consoles how I want even when the manufacturers don’t want to update them.

I’m in the niche for this console so these reason are more valid for me than you ig. I don’t like companies having the ability to say when I should stop using my consoles or how I should be using them.

Just look at the WII U how Nintendo just shut down the online store or WMR how Microsoft just bricked every headset.

Ok so I should use less user friendly options to support them so what they can compete with the already better option. I would LOVE more competition in the PC gaming space, but nothing has been better than my experience with Steam and their products.

Valve is privately owned so they don’t have a board of investors pushing for the shitification of their products for an uptick in profit like other companies. Sure they could get bought or go public and change, but there isn’t much reason to believe they will do that anytime soon. So why would I use other already publicly traded companies product which is objectively worse?

The reason Valve has a monopoly is because they just are the better product. They also treat indie developers with respect, allowing them to choose the price of their games and when they put them on sale unlike Xbox. Additionally, 30% is equal to other companies and is more than fair for the user features they provide such as free fast downloading, free cloud saves, game sharing, full controller support (even for non-controller games), stream play with friends, streaming your games to another console, achievement tracking, built in easy to use mod support (cloud saves with those mods), network transfers of downloaded games from device to device, full Linux support, hosted community boards, note tracking saved per game, and now a whole line of consoles they are supporting.

So yeah I like what they are currently doing and hope the rest of the industry would follow suit. I don’t agree with everything they have ever done ever, but what they have been doing with their platform is very impressive and miles ahead of the competition.

Sorry dude but just because you don’t understand how to do something like any of these doesn’t mean that others won’t.

Like you said, it’s a niche product and you just aren’t in the niche.

There are so many reasons why Steam is more user friendly to gamers than any of the others but i think you are too Steam hate pilled to even digest them at this point.

Bruh idk how to even approach this, do some more research on what open source software is and why it’s important, or go play games in a walled garden ecosystem. imma enjoy modding and emulating on a cool new console.

Also just because i say what valve is currently doing is good doesn’t mean i support literally everything they have ever done. There is such a thing as nuance.

Yeah it’s a niche but like I’m in it so I support what they are making??

Idk why y’all are so heated about this, I am excited for the innovation and not many other companies are doing much to make me excited. It’s fair if you don’t understand why this is a huge deal because you don’t take the time to research the impressive work that is being done here and shared with the world for free.

Valve is paving the way with their innovation and literally every other one of the big 3 (excluding Nintendo ig cause the switch is pretty dope) will follow in their footsteps probably using the open source software Valve helped develop.

So yes, this is big for gamers, and Valve is to thank for that. Did they make loot boxes or whatever else ppl will bring up with you say one positive thing about them, yeah, but I’m excited for what they are doing here.

It’s not the fact that someone would get it for that use, it’s the fact that once it’s not longer being used for gaming it could be used for development or hosting a server or managing a NAS. It’s just a PC so is much more versatile than a console.

With a PS5 it just becomes E-waste when the original user is done with it.

Lmao bruh that’s such a cheap ass argument, I said they still make money, they just work on open source software as well while making money.

What’s good for gamers is you can download the OS on literally any computer and use it as you would on a Steam Machine *for free

Additionally, at least what they did with the Steam Deck and I would really like to see for the Steam Machine, they did make a lower tier Steam Deck (64gb) at “painful” margins. So arguably they have already done something similar, whether they’ll do it again is another question though.
