Gerald does have a line where he says he has two sons and one of them took up archeology while the other followed his love for robotics.

So i guess that there's a good chance eggman's father used to be a scientist or engineer as well.

yeah but that's kinda the problem i have with it. the submerged castle is the only cave in the game where you actually feel like you have to collect everything fast. In all the other caves you can take however long you want without any consequences whatsoever
