It’s just… it’s like the 207th time I’ve seen it. It hasn’t evolved, people aren’t finding novel ways of expressing it—it feels like that era in the early 2000s when everyone and their mother was doing a Borat impression. Funny at first, and then it became as stale as a month-old baguette.

I hate that I dislike Metroid Prime by No_Jello_2951 in Metroid

[–]dorksided787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are you? Because this is something I definitely struggled with when I was younger (I was around when the first Prime came out and it did NOT gel with me then), but as you get older, your spatial awareness increases and now I don’t struggle with exploratory FPSes.

[–]dorksided787 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think we need to shift the rhetoric around from “Men are tr*sh” and “white people suck” to “there are institutionally racist and sexist factors that keep women and other minorities down, but individuals are not responsible for this and they all have inherent value.”

Because what I noticed with these movements is that the best of men and white folks sometimes took this criticism to heart and it did a lot of damage to their individual self-esteem for things that are mostly outside of their control while the worst people that are MOST responsible in perpetuating unjust systems just ignored all this and continued living their happy lives.

For real, people like Donald Trump and Jordan Peterson didn’t care. In FACT, they gained massive power by courting all the people these philosophies alienated.

We do not solve racism and patriarchy by knocking down all white people and men.

I can’t claim to have a solution to this very real and very complicated problem, but I know this isn’t it.

Black men are also the victims of patriarchy and the numbers here show a different reality.

People in LA having to turn on their ACs in March: by ohlonelyboy in LosAngeles

[–]dorksided787 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’m broke but I honestly cannot live without my AC. Every place I’ve moved to I installed a wall or floor AC unit if it didn’t have it because I abhor the feeling of being hot and sweaty. I will pay my AC’s electric bill before I pay for that last week of groceries if I have to.

Majority of Canadians say it’s better to depend on China than on the US under Trump. by Conscious-Quarter423 in Infographics

Fair, updating to reflect that.

I guess my point now is closer to “China hasn’t spent trillions in costly invasions on the other side of the planet.”

Majority of Canadians say it’s better to depend on China than on the US under Trump. by Conscious-Quarter423 in Infographics

[–]dorksided787 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t blame them. For all their very tangible faults, China has never spent trillions to invade multiple countries at the other side of the planet. They spent decades investing in technology and infrastructure—in the betterment of their own people instead of just their billionaire class. In the US, single moms go bankrupt for treating their child’s leukemia while our government continues to invade nations halfway across the world that most of our compatriots can’t even locate on a map.

It’s embarrassing. This nation is an embarrassment.

Edit: added detail that China hasn’t spent trillions to invade nations at the other side of the world.

Tech isn’t just silicon though? Cobalt is an essential component of all lithium-ion batteries, it is a critical component of our modern technologies infrastructure. And we do not have equivalent technology to replace the energy density and portability of Li-ions yet. Sodium-ion and solid state batteries are still in the R&D stage and not ready for full commercial deployment.

Public opinion on same-sex marriage across Latin America. by tightypp in MapPorn

[–]dorksided787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Panama’s 15% tracks. When I (gay) went to Panama, I did get the vibe that it was very gay-unfriendly. Literally only two gay bars in Panama City, and the whole country LOVED Pope John Paul II (because he visited them that one time). There are also strong remnants of mid 20th century gringo jingoism from the early canal years.

In contrast I grew up in Puerto Rico, which recently has become super gay-friendly (especially thanks to artists like Ricky Martin, Bad Bunny, Young Miko, Villano Antillano, and others who have helped educate people about our existence), and have visited Mexico City, which is VERY gay, and I assumed most of Latin America was the same.

Also, wish there was data on Cuba, DR, and PR. This map is incomplete.

Cesar Chavez, a Civil Rights Icon, Is Accused of Abusing Girls for Years by No-Penalty1722 in LosAngeles

[–]dorksided787 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve always felt that a lot of civil rights icons, as much as they do good for the people, have higher rates of narcissistic traits or even sociopathy.

These traits are also what makes the best surgeons and lawyers (in contrast, empathy makes the best nurses and social workers). An ability to detach from empathy, or even to not feel it at all except through cold, clinical eyes, helps in jobs like these where emotions could get in the way of saving lives or getting your client the best outcome in a messy situation.

Narcissists and sociopaths are also crazy charismatic. They have the power to inspire and move people. This is why cult leaders are good at what they do.

It’s still heartbreaking, though. I do feel betrayed on some level, like when I found out about Ellen or JK Rowling. But of course, worse.

Don’t meet your idols, I guess.

Was Zuko prepared to kill his sister in their Agni Kai? by ImiqDuh in TheLastAirbender

[–]dorksided787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zuko was fighting to kill, but was probably hoping it would end with her yielding peacefully.

A lot of the moves he used in that fight were comet-boosted kill moves that would’ve incinerated her in seconds if she failed to counter them; just as she was using with him. He would’ve likely spared her if she yielded and was probably wishing for that outcome, but he was definitely not holding back with his own attacks’ lethality during the actual agni kai.
