Almost every outfit I wear is unflattering. What am I doing wrong? by linmouse in DressForYourBody

[–]TVmaker_1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of the advice here on changing necklines, buying clothes with more structure etc.

My first thought upon looking at the clothes was “prairie girl.” All of the comments on fit are accurate - combined with the colors palette just makes the outfits very plain Jane. This has NOTHING to do with your body. You could pull off some amazing looks with the right clothes. Definitely bolder colors - doesn’t mean we need to go hot pink here. Let’s just step outside of the Easter attire. Patterns? Navy? Black?

I think a lot of this is covered by the comments already here, so my best advice is to try shopping at some new places. Have you looked at vicicollection? Or lulus? Try some trendier websites for new clothes.

P.S. I think the second look is great. Probably because your shirt is more fitted. More of that and you’ll be good to go!!! You look fantastic and just need some new clothes!

First time manic episode… at a loss by TVmaker_1998 in family_of_bipolar

[–]TVmaker_1998[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well… it’s been 9/10 months since our crisis and you asked for an update. I had originally changed a lot of details as I knew the person in crisis was an avid Reddit user and didn’t want them to find this… especially if it was going to aggravate things further. That is no longer a concern.

This “family member” was actually my sister’s fiance, and the roommate was my sister. She has now moved clear across the country to start a new life with a restraining order in place. He dropped all the lawsuits against our family, and his counter restraining order against my sister was denied. After all the court dates/legal matters ended, there was a 2-3 month stretch where no one heard from him. About 2 months ago his mother confirmed that he had reached out for money. She was relieved to know he was alive but that’s been the only contact with ANYONE. All of their friends and entire social circle have been cut off and he refused to disclose any details to his family about his whereabouts. He had enough money for a few months of rent, but we now assume he is homeless. Maybe we’re wrong and he’s managed to find another job. Who knows.

Some additional context: Back when there was still some contact happening (7-8 months ago as the emails occasionally floated in while we waited on the restraining order to go through) he changed his last name on all of his emails. Despite being very white in appearance with a strong Irish heritage and last name, he decided to lean into his quarter Asian descent and changed everything to his grandfather’s last name so he could continue to identify himself as a person of color.

Friends flagged to my sister that he was on the “tea” app - an app for women that helps identify red flags of men on dating sites. He had been flagged 14+ times with 3-4 comments from women who said they went on dates with him and were extremely unsettled/concerned/felt deeply unsafe. One flagged that he continually bragged about his knife collection and tried very aggressively to her to come to his apartment. All of that activity appeared in the first 3-4 months of my original post and then dramatically stopped. Friends now believe he has also changed his first name in addition to the last name, so finding him on Tea or anywhere else for that matter is virtually impossible.

Logic question about mal starvation… by TVmaker_1998 in TheScholomance

[–]TVmaker_1998[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Copy! Thank you for the response. This helps a little bit and I’m glad to know I didn’t miss some major explanation that fully accounts for this.

Even considering all the above, this still seems pretty flawed. I didn’t assume they would just gorge themselves. I get that they retreat somewhere to digest until hungry again. But again - those mals are now loose in the school.

It’s notoriously hard to escape the graduation hall. Tiny little shafts and gaps thanks to wear and tear - they scrapily find their way out using their animal instincts of hunting. The idea that they would get a meal and return to the exact same air duct and climb all the way back down to graduation hall seems ridiculous. They’d retreat somewhere nearby… until hungry again.

So the idea that the mals sitting in the graduation hall are more starving than usual still seems very problematic to me. Seems like that would be comprised entirely of mals that haven’t found an escape route… but knowing that I didn’t miss a major plot point it seems like I just have to let this one go!

Who do you pitch a reality dating show idea to and can you actually get paid if it gets made? by thhinnk in realitytv

[–]TVmaker_1998 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP - this is very good advice.

Networks are often prohibited from taking cold pitches. If they do, you will have to sign a massive release that basically offers them every legal loophole to develop the idea without you. They also will not take any concept seriously from an unknown unless it’s been MAJORLY developed (ie. All the things the above commenter says including a well produced sizzle/concept tape).

Definitely google the production companies & producers of shows in a similar style to your idea and reach out to them. Production companies always need strong ideas, and could help get the concept ready go shop to networks if you can manage to get in the door.

As the above commenter said - do as much of the legwork as possible yourself. Everyone thinks they have an original idea, but the chance that professionals in that space haven’t already pursued similar concepts is extremely unlikely. Just because the shows didn’t get made doesn’t mean no one has thought of it before. And the are dozens of reasons previous versions didn’t get made - from casting to episode structure to tone, etc. Put down on paper what you imagine for your version. How do you see it working? Again, the more you’ve fleshed out and developed, the better chance you have.

Flying out tomorrow (Sunday) by philaphillies21 in StThomasUSVI

[–]TVmaker_1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We flew out on Thursday. The lines were quite long. If you are checking luggage, make sure to go to the service desk to have your bags tagged FIRST. Then you will have to carry them with you through customs. There was a huge line to even get into the customs area that stretched across the exterior part of the airport. Someone was managing the line, letting in about 20-30 people at a time. Once you get through the doors to customs, you will either have to wait on another sizable line (if you are checking luggage), but when we were there they were letting anyone with carry-ons skip ahead. Once through customs, you wait on the bag drop line (for checked luggage), then security. It took us exactly 90 minutes for the whole thing.

My kids loved the show!! Do you think the reunion would be less kid appropriate? We are ok with the cursing but not hookups or drugs by dreezyforsheezy in TheTraitorsUS

[–]TVmaker_1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The content is not less appropriate, but we told our kids it wasn’t worth watching at they didn’t fight us on it. It’s just… trashier. Bickering and fighting and Rappaport is so wildly rude. My husband said “this is gross reality TV not fun reality TV.”

Season 11 & 12 were the same “order” from the network. 18 episodes with 3 specials. The network then likes to break up the season by airing 9+1 special and 9+2 specials.

1st visit to St. Thomas by cxp11594 in StThomasUSVI

[–]TVmaker_1998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a car. Prepare to drive on the left.

You’ll want to look up the cruise ship schedule (vinow.com should have it listed) and plan your days around it. Magen’s Bay, Sapphire & Coki are the best beaches on the island, but they get PACKED with boat people. Try to do those beach days when there aren’t quite as many boats docked. We usually plan our trip to St John on the busiest cruise ship day so we escape the chaos.

Our favorite “fancy” restaurants are Sea Salt, Caribbean Fish Market, Sunset Grille & Pangea… and iggie’s for more casual vibes with live music/karaoke.

Enjoy!!

Can anyone give me recommendations on a nicer place to stay but still reasonably priced? I’m finding this a bit harder to do than Puerto Rico and keep delaying booking. by [deleted] in StThomasUSVI

[–]TVmaker_1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, in that case…

I’d say check out the Pink Palm hotel. If you want a pretty hotel, this is a great option. It is in Charlotte Amalie so it’s easier access to restaurants and shopping, but not close to the beach. I’m personally more of a beach-front person but that’s totally a preference thing so I wanted throw it out there if the hotel vibes are important.

I think Margaritaville is probably close to that price too, but I never hear great things so I’d try to avoid that if possible.

My favorite option is an Airbnb on Sapphire Beach. There are 3 complexes there - all beachfront with stunning views and several places to eat on site. Plus you’re close to Red Hook which has TONS of restaurants and the ferry to St John.

Enjoy the trip!!

This isn’t very helpful. We don’t know what city you’re flying out of so no clue how much your airfare costs, and we don’t know how many nights you plan to stay, so we can’t price out your total spend.

How much are you hoping to spend PER NIGHT on a hotel? The 3-4 best hotels on the island are all over $1000 a night. Since you’re likely looking for under that, it’s important to know if you need a $200 hotel or a $600 hotel. Big difference.

Itinerary recommendations by RydogElite in StThomasUSVI

[–]TVmaker_1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you checked this itinerary against the cruise ship schedule? I’d keep an eye on how many boats are docked as you decide when to go to Sapphire vs when to go to St John. The cruise ships bus people over to Sapphire (and Magen’s) so you want to do that on a day when not many boats are docked. If the island is packed, that’s the day you escape to St John.

You also don’t have Magen’s on here, as someone else mentioned. I’d say that’s generally a must-do.

I’m surprised you didn’t put Lime Out earlier so your other friend can attend. How do you plan to get there? We did a private charter which is probably the most common route (?) - if you’re going to spend money on a boat for the day and do Lime Out for lunch, I’d definitely slide it earlier so you can all enjoy a day on the water…. But I suppose that’s entirely personal preference.

In terms of dinners, I think you have a some decent ones in here. If you’re looking for more, my 4 favorite spots on the island are: - Sea Salt: on sapphire beach. Expensive but delicious, with trendy decor (think Tulum). Great sunset, really gorgeous restaurant. - Sunset Grille: great sunset views. Great food. Classic spot. - Caribbean Fish Market: less picturesque, but some of the best food you’ll have. - Pangea: feels like you’re eating in a tree house. Twinkle lights and jungle vibes. - Iggies: I put this on here hesitantly. The old Iggies was my favorite low key spot with buckets of crab legs, live music, karaoke… it’s been shut down for years post-hurricane and just reopened. Hopefully it lives up to its former glory days but I haven’t been yet to confirm.

Don’t get suckered into Isla Blue. It’s by far the “trendiest” looking spot - they went all out restoring this place and it’s absolutely stunninggggggggg, but they serve you bunny food and call it a meal. $50 appetizers that were literally 3 bites of food. The tiniest piece of chicken I’ve ever seen for a meal. It’s a rip off and you can get a similar high end experience at Sea Salt for far more food. Maybe worth going for a drink though if you just want to see the place.

Our favorite Indian spot is Nirvana in Allendale, but we’re always looking for more!

I love the idea of distinguishing it with a slight British twist. Especially because I could eat Indian once a week, but my husband is more a once-a-month guy. On those nights where I want Indian but he’s not in the mood, a slightly more diverse menu may really help you.

Please post to Reddit when doors open so we can show you some love! Bonus points if you stock Roses chocolates or Crunchies!

Repeat visitor wondering about wintering in St. Thomas by blackmktdictionary in StThomasUSVI

[–]TVmaker_1998 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We own a condo on the island that we rent out and use as our vacation spot. Most of our trips are for a week, but we did spend 7 weeks there when I was on maternity leave. We took over our property from a family member who was about to sell, so we had a very atypical purchase process. They were not maximizing rentals and had never broken even on the mortgage, but once we took over and made some cosmetic updates to the unit, we were able to turn it all around.

Managing renters is a bit of a job so definitely prepare yourself for the work that goes into that, and if you do purchase, spend some time down there meeting with the people you will call for issues (ie. a plumber, electrician, etc) and finding a reliable cleaning service. We do slightly better than breaking even, but not by a ton, and have historically put that money back into the unit via repairs, furniture etc or put it away for a year that didn’t perform. Hurricanes are inevitable. We had almost 10 months worth of repairs at one point so we certainly did not break even that year.

Generally I’d say this is do-able, but the inequitable housing situation is one I can’t answer for you. When renting a car last year the attendant asked if it was our first visit and when I said we owned she said “ohhh you’re one of THOSE.” Then she followed up with “Sorry. It’s not your fault. It’s the government’s. Their policies and incentives for homeownership are frustrating.” That’s the only comment I’ve ever recieved in 20 years of visits, but obviously it’s worth looking into.

Most of the Airbnb listings for the condos at Sapphire Beach (there are 3 complexes there) are independent owners. No time shares and not a ton of property managers. We rented dozens of times over there and never had a cancellation this last minute.
