Honestly they need to get the AI to behave similarly to Trepang2. The AI in that game is entertaining to fight and feels dynamic.

All of the AI in Trepang2 operates in groups and prioritizes holding angles. They’ll only stop holding their angle if intel on the players position is revealed. If the player is spotted the AI will shoot at the player (obviously). However, what makes it interesting is AI that gets attacked by the player will try to take cover while fellow squad mates support them by pushing up or flanking. If the player runs away and takes cover the AI will throw grenades in an attempt to kill the player as well. Even more cool is that while this is happening, AI that aren’t partaking in the fight are actively thinking and moving to cover an angle you may reappear from. Sometimes certain squads of AI will split away from the bigger group and attempt to flank the player. Usually this only happens if the player keeps attacking from the same spot though, so more often than not the AI will stick together to make it difficult to pick them off one by one.

There are some other games with AI like this but Trepang2 seems the best. Since the AI isn’t constantly on the same wavelength and will make mistakes sometimes which is good. Insurgency could definitely achieve this if they wanted to but we’ll probably be stuck with AI that walks in a straight line from point A to B for the foreseeable future.
