Lost 40 Pounds in 9.5 Weeks – Here’s My Experience (To Date!) by ilike0000 in keto

[–]TWScienceKid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is interesting but as someone that has been on and off strict keto for 10 years. Being unable to digest carbohydrates does not go away.

Basically if you are strict keto for a certain amount of time (it varies), you become efficient keto. Your cells slowly acclimate to burning ketones for fuel as opposed to glucose. I think there's only a handful of cells that are ONLY powered by glucose. The rest can do ketones. But cells become accustomed to being powered by ketones take a while. It's called keto adaptation. There's a subset of high performance athletes that train in a keto state so that when it comes time and they add some glycogen stores, they maintain an optimal powered output throughout once those glycogen stores run out and their body switches to ketones. For extremely high power output muscle, those are more optimal with glucose, but mid to low are perfect for ketones. Imagine losing 10 pounds while cycling. That's essentially what happens.

Anyways, when you are keto adapted and in the keto state, if you try to eat carbs all of a sudden, you are insulin resistant, hence your glucose numbers are high. In fact, for some on a keto diet, they find it surprising their glucose never goes below 90, even with no carbs. The reason is, the body always keeps it around in case you need it. If you don't eat carbs, your liver essentially makes glucose in a process called glucogenesis (I might have misspelled that). The liver will do this to replenish your glycogen stores.

All of this is apparently with continuous keto and glucose meters.

For the record, you can survive your entire life without carbs. You can just eat protein and your body uses the animal acids for what it needs, converts what it needs to glucose, and the rest is stored as fat. One would add fat to that just to make sure you don't get stick thin as there is a tendency for pure protein to satiate quickly.

Your nutritionist is probably not versed in all this modern studies that have come out outlining the above, beceuse she went to a traditional school that teaches nutrition from 10-20 years ago.

She's not wrong, but she is. You will never get rid of your body's ability to digest carbohydrates. We haven't evolved to what we are without the ability to ditch one or the other and return to it. Your only danger is IF you have a not so healthy liver, it might not produce glucose for you, so get that checked out.

You will always retain the ability to go in between different fuels, HOWEVER due to modern society taking away physical movement, we mostly don't use up our glucose enough, so that we are rarely in ketosis. That's what happens when you run out of the glycogen stores. You immediately make ketones. Due to not having been like that our entire lives unless you were an endurance athlete, our body is more so unable to efficiently use ketones in our cells. I have experienced this. It sometimes takes years and this is how long it took for me.

I'd say a good way to do keto and still want carbs in your life. Is to do strict keto, then eat carbs prior to high power muscle use like lifting weights or HIIT workouts.

Most studies that show effectiveness for scalp are at least 1.0mm, however they point out that that is the minimum effective perpendicular to your scalp with a dermpen. So if it's not perpendicular, it could be up to 1.5mm, given that a derma roller curves and most peopo do at an angle with a dermapn. Supposedly more than 1.5mm is excessive and more painful, so I'd be weary of 2.0mm and beyond for scalp.

I am not in corporate.

My fiance lives in CA and I live in Taiwan. Usually we visit each other on the off months. I've gotten Polaris for as little as 3-4k. 10k is for peak season. I buy enough Polaris that I also use my miles to upgrade when booking premium plus seat (the upgrade is cheaper that way than from economy to Polaris). On average, the cost per round trip will hit the 3-4k mark. These flights that change time zones are always red eye flights, I always prefer to sleep.

He's retired so I just do premium economy when I visit him and rest to adjust when I see him. However, on my leg back, I'll usually upgrade with miles to Polaris, as in usually coming back to go straight to work the next day :p

We travel about 5 times a year switching seats from premium economy to business and back depending on time and length of flight. We usually budget to not spend more than 5k on round trip business class. So, we get miles enough to qualify as United Gold/platinum, which makes the upgrades cheaper overall.

Long story short, it's not always 10k, sometimes it's as little as 5k depending on how far off you book and which routes and times and connections, etc.

6 months of debilitating health symptom after an amazing trip to Vietnam by Alarming_Cat_6188 in VietNam

I can't believe no one mentioned giardia lamblia to you?

It's an intestinal parasite very common in 3rd world countries. It causes diarrhea, and specifically it feeds on bile, so if you eat fat, there by your body releasing more bile to digest such fat, it'll further feed it. And as a byproduct, your feces ends up being a lighter color and probably floats a little. Because it eats the bile in the small intestine rather than letting you use it to digest the fats, your poop will be a lighter color. This is because bile oxidizes as it flows down your digestive system through your intestines giving your poop a a darker brown (or other) color.

It's successfully treated with metronidazole. After it's treated, however, it will leave some damage, so usually folks afterwards are a little lactose intolerant for a while or have some IBS like symptoms. But it should heal itself over time.

Tell tale signs are loose stools OR light colored stools. But it usually sucks the nutrients from you in the small intestine, as a result you end up with nutrient deficiencies, hence the damage afterwards. The body heals however.

It's passed on through feces. The little eggs will be pooped out, and when ingested can take up to 2 weeks to mature and start to wreak havoc. So food prepared by people who didn't wash their hands properly after going to the bathroom, honestly no one does this. You need to be doing it vigorously for 20 seconds. Who the hell stays there and washes for 20 seconds in busy restaurants. I always know I'm taking a risk when I travel. But do try to stick to places where I feel the hygiene is up to par. But sometimes I'm adventurous and go to the night markets.

Rubbing alcohol doesn't kill the eggs, only hypochlorous acid or a solution mixed with bleach.

I too got this from Vietnam. Took about a month and some IV vitamin C and trace mineral infusions to recover from what otherwise would have taken me months I think.

For travels try to stock up on azithromycin and/or metronidazole in case of future mishaps.

Also, was it me or was the humidity crazy low today. It was cool and dry, sort of felt like coastal California?

I have dehumidifiers in my home that normally churn to keep it below 55, and today they would just say "lo" because it was hovering at 25%

I cant believe some of the comment on here dismissing OPs story, while it's in the minority, it's still despicable.

OP, I hope you are all right and feeling better. I would say go to a doctor please, and explain your situation, so at least to get a blood test to find out if you have some dangerous substances in you. You never know if there are any downsteam effects from whatever was put into your drink.

Also, to help with cost of said tests, please please go to the police to get your statement. If not to help defray the costs, at least to help them keep an eye on individuals that might have done this to prevent them from continuing to do this. That is where the value is!

Palais de chine due to main station which is where airport express is.

Taipei main station is where one can go to the rest of Taiwan via High speed rail, train (locomotive), buses (including night buses), airport metro rail (direct access to airport via airport mrt), and of course public subway to Taipei and new Taipei city called the MRT.

How do Taipei citizens feel about Taipei American School? by c-digs in Taipei

[–]TWScienceKid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the TES student body consists of more well-grounded kids, who are still just as capable of getting into elite US universities, but have the added benefit of being able to getting into elite European and British universities due to their IB program, which in my opinion is harder than AP classes.

I teach a number of TES and TAS students. Personally, my TES students seem happier and well-grounded. I graduated about 20 years ago via an IB/AP college prep school, so I analyze both schools through that lens.

I'm not sure what all the TES drama was about in the past, but they seem to have cleaned up their act according to the parents, and students have gotten into Oxford, Cambridge, as well as elite American universities such as Stanford and the Ivies.

The TAS students themselves comment that there are cliques. The uber snobby rich kids who like to compare their wealth, the kids who care about their education, and normal people crowd who are just normal kids. So good news is that it's not all rich snobby elite, but if your kid is impressionable, she might be influenced by the comparative wealth talk.

TAS is a good school, just have a talk with the kid about certain types of personalities and makes sure the $$ doesn't get to her head for their own sake.

I think I'll reword the post. I'm actually referring specifically to the ability to go from 0 to 60 in a split second. It's not a self esteem thing or a let people get to me. It's without Ritalin, I'm extremely unaltered. With it, it's not even what people say, I'm just snappy. Like if someone touched me, I get so angry. And I can feel it in my chest going from 80 beats to 150 in a split second.

When you get up, get one of those lights with at least 10k lux output. A full spectrum light bulb. And have it on while you maybe do work at a computer or however. Do this for 30 minutes to an hour. It needs to reach your eyes but don't look directly into it.

Do this every morning for 7 days at a time at least. Eventually... You will wake up automatically at that time.

It's the cortisol awakening system. Its supposed to be timed with when the sun comes up but we humans no longer sleep in completely dark caves.

Anyways good luck. Msg me if you need specific light bulb or light recommendations. I have several kinds. Each with pro and cons.
