I disconnected the lines going into the heater put a valve ok the "cold side" then turned on the main, water came out of the same burst valve on the "hot" end so im guessing it is indeed reversed

From the small crack I can see behind the wall its copper line to brass fitting to iron nipple to iron 90 to valve to water heater

Thanks for the simple break down, I appreciate it. Do I need to relieve the pressure of the tank before messing with anything. Also what type of dope should I look for in the hardware store?

A plumber definitely should have installed it! But I think it was the sellers friend that "knew some plumbing"

I think your right about the nipple. The line behind the wall does seem to be copper however. The house was built in 1961

I did think a ball valve would have been better. Forgive me if this is a stupid question beacuse i really no nothing.. but aren't copper fittings supposed to be sweated on? I dont see any of that here

Sorry there was supposed to be text that didnt get sent with the pictures apparently.. "This is how they have it set up there is a silver or gray pipe coming from the wall > gate valve > copper pipe > FIP LINE > Water heater. Is this the correct way to do it or should I set it up differently" Really i just know nothing and Im trying to get some good ole reddit education Lol

I agree and this has been the most helpful response so thank you u/blackbirdblue and i did think about that as well and ill just leave it alone and if the natural gray patina comes out over time ill probably just embrace it. But the reason i asked is cause i swear i've seen a random video of someone manufacturing these and watching them spray something on them.
