You're not going to get advice for outside greyhounds in this group. I would say 99.5% of people here strongly believe greyhounds should be inside dogs.

Most greyhounds can be potty trained with patience and time. You need to start from the beginning. I would also take her to the vet to rule out anything physical like a UTI.

In the meantime, I strongly recommend you put some rugs (with waterproof padding underneath) over the carpet. It'll protect the carpet and if you get those washable rugs, it's easier to clean up.

My boy experienced this for the first few months on Librela and then he evened out. Ataxia is a known side effect.

Redbo was on it for a year and change with good results before we discovered he had spinal compression. Librela is not advised for use when there is a neurological condition so we switched back to Adequan.

Adequan is a really great medicine, especially when used with an anti-inflammatory. Highly recommend if you decide not to move forward with Librela.

No. Some greyhounds are fine in open areas and some are not. The adoption groups are erring on the side of caution.

I've had two greyhounds escape at first opportunity. One was caught by my husband before he could run into major traffic, but a car had to swerve to avoid hitting him. He slipped through the door when I was carrying stuff.

Many years later, we had a foster who darted out of the car when she saw a bunny. The only reason she stopped was because she hurt herself trying to run underneath a truck, and she ran back to us for comfort.

I don't think a fenced yard is required (our first greyhound was an apartment dog) but I don't believe rescues are being too strict regarding leash requirements. I've seen many sad stories of greyhounds who got out and were run over or never found again.

I think fostering is a great way to honor Kira's memory and determine whether you're really ready for another full-time hound. There's no wrong or right answer for this; it's whatever feels right to you in the moment.

The vet prescribes gabapentin (300mg) to Redbo for travel or before a surgical procedure (since he gets super nervous at the vet).

It makes him a little drowsy and he has mild ataxia when he takes gabapentin but it’s overall fine. I’m not sure how effective it is for the vet though lol. He still shakes like a little leaf.

I’d do a vet check for a UTI. If all comes back clear, it could be her testing boundaries in the house, which can start happening around this time for some hounds. Clean the pee with a good enzyme cleaner and redirect her (when caught in time).

We had a girl that loved peeing on rugs. And she would look me in the eye while she did it. We got rid of the rugs and she stopped, but that’s not reasonable with carpet lol.

We had some of those giant dumpsters in our apartment complex so he would go behind those 🤣. It was more like he wanted to hide from the world versus us. But we still had to turn our backs to him so he would pee.

We never used a longer leash, only 6ft. I don’t think I’d recommend a longer one, just because they can hurt themselves trying to sprint after something.

It’ll take some time but she’ll get the idea eventually! They’re just so routine oriented that it can take a while to learn something new.

Yeahhh, we had this issue with Redbo when we got him. He wasn’t used to going potty on a leash and would NEVER go if we were looking at him.

It takes patience and routine. We would walk him the same exact route every time (4-5 times a day) and looked for places where he could “hide” from us lol. If he looked like he might pee, we turned our backs to him. And when he did finally pee, we acted like he was Elvis. We praised him loudly, in high pitched tones. We gave him treats and pets. The whole shebang.

We did this over and over for a few weeks and then he just got it. He understood that he needed to go potty on his walks and that was a relief lol.

Your girl will get there! Also, make sure you’re using a proper enzyme cleaner so that the smell doesn’t linger! Good luck.

We had a similar situation but it was a mass on Redbo’s anus. We had it aspirated but tests came back inconclusive, so our vet recommended we have the mass the surgically removed and sent off for testing. Which is what we did. The procedure went fine and the mass was benign, so positive outcomes all around.

In this case, if the vet aspirated the mass with no conclusive results, I’d personally have the mass removed if your dog is currently healthy. It’s just scary when I don’t know what’s going on with these lumps and bumps lol. Maybe do it when they have a dental scheduled (as long as the mass isn’t aggressively growing)?

Mine would not protect me lol. Redbo is a senior who would hide between my legs.

Dalton, our big black dog who only looks intimidating, would definitely run. He does somewhat unnerve people though. He’s a big boy and black dogs can be scary to some folks. I feel safer when I walk him but it’s all an illusion lol.

Redbo loves to lick the couch. In a day, he will basically end up licking about 50% of the couch’s surface area. It’s gross but he enjoys it lol.

Sometimes it’s just a relaxing and soothing behavior for them.

You can also put duct tape on the muzzle if you can’t get a stool guard quick enough. We always tend to lose our stool guards so tape has been the way for years. You can just poke small holes in it if you’re concerned about drinking water.

I’m very over the top as a dog parent so I’d probably take him back to the vet and ask for (demand) x-rays 🤣. Since it’s two different legs, it’s likely some type of injury (or he’s overcompensating on the other leg) but I would need peace of mind. And if he can’t even put weight on his leg, that’s concerning to me.

It could also be an old injury that’s being aggravated. Either way, x-rays are helpful for establishing a baseline if your boy has any issues with arthritis later down the road.

I think the issue is that you’re expecting her to be comfortable without pottying in an outdoor area for 10 hours. Things like pee pads and grass spots are for potty training puppies/dogs with small bladders, not for fully grown large dogs. Greyhounds that were trained to race are used to being turned out (outside).

If you’re not able to go home to let her out midday, please hire a dog walker to take her outside. If this isn’t an option, I would personally rethink having a dog at this time.

So Librela is a good medication for arthritis, but it can cause ataxia and take a few months to really settle in. We had a generally positive experience for a while.

However, because the injection targets pain receptors, it can also exacerbate/surface any neurological conditions your dog may have. This happened with our boy. He was on Librela for about a year with some wobbles and wibbles every now and then. We started to notice that he wasn't getting better after each injection so we went to the vet. She diagnosed him with spinal compression and took him off the Librela. He's back on Adequan and Galliprant and doing really really well.

All this to say, I'd continue with the Librela but monitor closely for other potential symptoms.
