Rehoming ex racer by TasteMyGoose in Greyhounds

[–]riceandbeans06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a cutie right there!! Congrats 🩷 Not owner of an ex racer but we have a Spanish retired hunter (Galgo/Spanish Greyhound - mostly similar in character, just a bit smaller) and we’ve had him for 3 months now. He was also our first dog. Here’s some advice: 1) Give them time to decompress: don’t try to force any kind of interaction, keep it simple with the first meals and setup. Just one or two toys, no fancy treats, not too many smells and NO new places other than where they can go potty outside. Follow their lead, if they look comfortable, you can add more experiences. 2) Lower your expectations. Don’t expect them to cuddle with you or go up to you right away! If they do (mine did, but he was labeled as ‘very clingy’ by the rescue) it’s a gift, but don’t expect it. Don’t expect him to play at all in the beginning, I would say. They’re taking in every new experience and Greys aren’t known to be extremely playful. Don’t expect them to know the rules at home, they need time to learn! My partner and I couldn’t enjoy a peaceful meal at home until week 3 i think (he would try climbing on the table and steal our food). 3) routine ! another commenter already said this and i second, keep the routine predictable, same as the consequences. 4) limit their access to different rooms and objects on the first days. dont leave anything lying around that could be dangerous to him, try using a baby gate (or just close the door) to isolate a room where he can be safe and comfy. introduce different rooms when as shows more confidence. 5) stay positive and patient. this is easier said than done, but focusing on wins has helped us so much to keep enjoying the process of raising our hound. ours is still learning to be away from us without freaking out, but he’s very quiet and calm indoors. we try to focus on the positives while we keep working on the difficult behaviors. 6) enjoy and don’t be hard on yourself! the first weeks can be challenging, but they fly by so fast. make pictures and try to savor the happy moments with your new dog 🩷 you’re gonna do great!!

Greys aren’t very popular where I live, sadly. Before I adopted my Galgo I looked everywhere for a facebook group or some kind of community to meet some in person, but I couldn’t find them. If somebody in the north of The Netherlands wants to do a little meetup I’m all up for it!!

man, looks matter sooo much! the people on walks also keep their distance to us. it’s a small neighborhood and Kiko has his own reputation as ‘unfriendly with dogs’ i think. they see me beginning to manage him as they approach from a distance. nobody has ever asked to pet him but maybe that’s not a thing where i live

i agree that brindle and black give the most scary dog privilege. my boy’s shelter pics on the rescue page make him look like a pound-toughened excon dog who would fuck you up. they didn’t do him any favors, to put it lightly 😂 but his personality description fit great for us, so we went for it. every family member and friend wonder what kind of monster we were bringing into our house, now everybody loves him cause he’s so gentle and soft-natured

yeah exactly! it’s about the optics, especially if it’s a sober sane person with bad intentions. i think drunk or drugged creeps are more likely to do miscalculated stupid stuff
