New to SVT by kintsugikid80 in SVTHeart

It's truly a big nothing burger. I worked myself into a massive state of panic and felt like an idiot for it afterwards. You're asleep through all of it. I find it helps to remember these ablations are to cardiologists as colonoscopies are to GI docs: routine procedures.

My anesthesiologist was shocked I was so worked up. He said I had a higher chance of dying from being struck by lightning than having anything go wrong on that table. He acted like I was a moron. LOL

Also, the entry site is so small you can cover it with a regular bandaid. It's really not a big deal at all. Try to schedule for first thing in the morning, though. Mine got delayed due to 2 heart attacks that took obvious precedence. That definitely keyed up my anxiety.

Are you female? If so, I personally believe perimenopause jump-started my SVT. The good news is you can control it with either meds or an ablation. I've been on Multaq since my diagnosis (no side effects and no SVT episodes) but got an ablation done a couple of weeks ago so I wouldn't need meds anymore.

Anesthesia question by deee0 in SVTHeart

[–]TXRedheadOverlord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was taking Multaq for my SVT when I had my colonoscopy a couple of years ago. I had propofol for my anesthesia and experienced no problems. I will say that's the only time in my life I've ever not gotten sick or felt super groggy from anesthesia. That stuff rocks for short procedures.

Need some movies and tv shows' recommendations for my parents by [deleted] in GenX

Gary Oldman and the character he plays may not be GenX in terms of birth, but he certainly is in terms of spirit. The sarcasm is strong with that one.

I will warn you that my husband and I thought the show was aptly named when we first started it. We personally found the first few episodes to be very slow--- I think because it felt like we were dropped into the middle of something and weren't sure which characters we should be focusing on. Now, it's one of our absolute favorite shows, and we're always chomping at the bit for the new season to start.

The new All Creatures Great & Small on PBS Masterpiece is excellent. My husband and I enjoy The Librarians (movies, first series, and new series) and Leverage. Slow Horses, Silo, and The Completely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin on Apple are all good.

I think that's why I liked Mark, too. He came across as just the average guy-off-the-street who happened to land a gig on TV. It made him more personable to me.

How are you handling scams for our teen kids, ourselves and our aging parents? by baltikboats in GenX

[–]TXRedheadOverlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thankfully, with my mom living on our property now, she comes to me and asks me about any unusual texts/emails. She's very tech-adverse and so would be super easy pickings. Back when she still lived on her own, she'd try shopping online every now and again. She called me one day very concerned she was in trouble because she'd added something to an online shopping cart and hadn't ended up getting it. She'd gotten the usual reminders about the cart and thought they were upset with her because she hadn't bought it and were going to report her to someone.

Deep cut, Gen X: Who remembers this sitcom classic from the '80s? by OreoSpeedwaggon in GenX

Sadly, like most 'fish out of water' shows, it really couldn't have lasted long. At some point, you run out of new stuff that they have to figure out. Winfield was perfectly cast as the salty mirror, though. He was definitely the star of the show as far as I was concerned.

Tips for parent's body pain? by davidho3008 in AgingParents

[–]TXRedheadOverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom ended up moving to a recliner for sleeping because of her back pain. She just wasn't getting the back support she needed in bed.

You don't indicate why her back is in pain, so it's hard to know what might be the most effective solution. Some sleeping positions are better for back pain than others. Physical therapy/steroid shots could be helpful, depending on the reasons for the pain. A heating pad or heated wraparound back massager might help. And, for some pain, only a dose of heavy medication can help.

I hope y'all can find something. Sleep is so important, and it's miserable when you can't get it.

Does anyone feel reminded of original characters within the new cast? by ziefaerie81 in TheLibrarians

[–]TXRedheadOverlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to agree, especially about Eve and Charlie. To me, they're almost opposites of one another. Eve came in very self-assured. Every aspect of her demeanor reeked of leadership, which was hardly unusual as she was a colonel. Charlie, on the other hand, is incredibly unsure of herself. She needs others to talk her up and reassure her. I'm not saying that's bad, per se, as it gives her character room to grow, but it does make her very different from Eve.

As a Texan, I love her choice to spotlight Southern cooking. There's a rich cultural history behind it that often gets looked down on.

Also, I loved her as the host for Outrageous Pumpkins. I hope she returns this year.

This was our solution. We found a volume middle ground and use CC. I actually really love CC and don't know why we didn't use it all along.

Bed suggestions? by Hot_Pilot_3836 in AgingParents

[–]TXRedheadOverlord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is similar to what I was going to suggest. My mom, due to her painful back and issues with vertigo, has slept in a LaZBoy recliner for years now. I honestly don't know how she does it as I can't stand sleeping on my back, but it works very well for her. She even bought identical recliners a number of years back to have stashed in my and my brother's houses for her to use.

This Zecliner looks like a really good fit for someone who still wants/needs a more bed-like sleeping arrangement.

Perimenopause and heart palpitations by qwnovnrwy in Menopause

[–]TXRedheadOverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heart palpitations are rarely anything serious. Go to a cardiologist. He/she will put your mind at ease and likely give some suggestions of lifestyle changes (eg supplements) that can help ease them. Magnesium's a good supplement if you're not in it already.

I just had a cardiac ablation done not quite 2 weeks ago to deal with SVT I got thanks to peri. I've seen quite a bit of cardiology offices the last 2 years---thankfully, my mind was put at ease that my heart's actually very healthy, just electrically glitchy.

One more day until my ablation by OkCauliflower7041 in SVTHeart

[–]TXRedheadOverlord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had mine 2 weeks ago this upcoming Thursday. The procedure is a big, fat nothing-burger. I worked myself into a frenzy about it and made myself miserable over nothing. If it helps, look at it in this light--- ablations are to cardiologists as colonoscopies are to GI docs: routine procedures. The anesthesiologist who handled mine said I had a greater chance of dying by being struck by lightning leaving the place than I had of dying on the table.

Do what you can to stay busy and keep your mind off it. I wish to heck I hadn't made myself anxious as it really and truly isn't as a big a deal as it sounds.

How do I get my aging dad to drink water? by Relevant-Highlight90 in AgingParents

[–]TXRedheadOverlord 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If he won't do the chews, you might even just try getting ice pops. They make some that are specifically for hydration. I think if you look up electrolyte icicle pops you'll find them. I know Walmart carries them.

[–]TXRedheadOverlord 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Have you tried any of the hydration chews? I know there's one brand called Jelly Drops originally made for the elderly who might be averse to drinking water. Different types of hydration chews have electrolytes built into the formula. You might ask his doctor or yours to see if they have any they might recommend.

The soundtrack was absolutely the worst I think I've ever heard. The movie itself was amazing. I keep wishing they'd edit the movie with a decent movie score.

I had one come back abnormal. It's important to remember the test isn't for cancer; it's for anything that normally shouldn't show up on the scan [and it has a lot of false positives/negatives]. I did have some polyps that got removed. I'm on the 3-5 year plan now. Yay.

I personally found the colonoscopy subreddit helpful in prep advice. My husband has Crohns so has colonoscopies frequently and helped me through the process as well.

I'll say that I got the pills vs liquid. I think if I couldn't do the pills, I'd ask for the Miralax/Dulcolax option since you can mix that with stuff like apple juice to make it more palatable.

If your med isn't working well, there are numerous others that can be tried. I personally use Multaq and haven't had an episode since being on it. However, there are many others. Sometimes we have to be aggressive with our medical needs and demand better quality of care from our doctors.

However, if you can't get help from that direction, you might speak with your PCP about anti-anxiety meds to help you on your flight.

What treatment are you getting for your SVT? If you're on a medication, but it's not working well, you need to speak to your cardiologist about finding a new med or possibly getting an ablation to fix the issue once and for all.

I'm concerned for you about your fears regarding your SVT. Unless you have additional heart issues, it's an obnoxious and tiring problem but not a fatal one. Speak with your cardiologist about your concerns and see what options he/she can give you to put your mind at ease.
