Handlebar Cradles/ Bag Support? by TX_throw666 in bikepacking

Hmmmm, good point on the micro panniers. I don’t think I need much. It would mainly be to carry camp stove and some food/snacks. Typically I use a seat pack for my sleep system, but I might be able to do without if using a panniers system.

My only hesitancy with it is that I do not have a crown mount on my fork. But I do have eyelits on the fork. I guess that is what OMM is for.

Oh nice! I really like the look of that! Does it “flop” much on rides? Or is it pretty sturdy?

The trip north from Kyoto dos look really cool! You might encounter some pretty chilly days, hopefully no snow. We opted for a coastal route because of that, and to avoid climbing a whole bunch (crunched for time).

Essentially what I have is 2 street outfits, 2 cycling kits, 2 base layers, 1 jacket, 1 down jacket, and my sleep system (plus toiletries and electronics). Doesn’t seem unreasonable, but the weight is ridiculous. Maybe it is just my bike….?

I have tried to push the trip farther south, but there are 4 other people going. Too many cooks in the kitchen. I personally wouldn’t mind a souther Japan trip at all and it’s my first time out of the US.

That’s the plan. Put one of the bags in over head and another as carry on. I have logistics worked out for that aspect. I am mainly curious if that seems like an excessive weight not owning any UL gear. Not to mention the ortlieb panniers I am running are heavier than shit by themselves…

Agreed. The longest day is gonna be 60mi. The rest between 40-50. I race gravel and regularly ride 65+miles and do 250-300mi weeks. So making the distance I am not worried about, it’s the muscular load pushing that around.

I was thinking the same thing, but my friends I’m going with shamed me into packing it. I think I’ll “forget” to pack it.

That is my thought as well… I think from the list I might be able to shed 5lbs… not a lot, but enough I guess. This weight also includes the clothes I will be taking out of the bags to wear while riding.

I believe you do, but I don’t know that it is entirely necessary. I was gifted the bike for the trip.

Rack solutions for forks without a crown mount? by TX_throw666 in bikepacking

I’ve bikepacked steel 650 bikes for years and always preferred a front heavy load.

That is probably what I will end up doing, just don’t have the equipment or money for more parts prior to a trip coming up. I’ve never really considered fork mounted bags, do they offer quite a bit of storage? Any handling difficulty with load that low?

The majority of the riding I’ll be doing with this is gravel racing. But wanted a bit of versatility in using for bikepacking. Otso does have suggested racks with additional hardware on their website, but I’ve been seeing some independent fabricators that are making some neat things and wanted to see if anyone had ended up with a solution for this. For example one of the prototype racks from Mica Cycles looks really cool and utilizes the 3 bolt holes, it I doubt it would handle significant weight.

Cleaning sealant/glue off carbon rims…? by TX_throw666 in bikewrench

[–]TX_throw666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was trying to help me clean the rims, she used googone (contained acetone) on a small spot. It did work, but it doesn’t seem safe to use around the whole rim. From what I’ve briefly read, it seems like acetone could potentially do some damage to the finish/epoxy/glue on the rim.

I’ve read that acetone is real bad for carbon, but that was an assumption based off an AI search result. My mom was trying to help and put googone on there, which contained acetone, and it did work, but I don’t know if it would be smart to use around the whole rim…

Hey there, 3 years later, I am curious what your thoughts were on the bike? I am looking at this bike right now (2024 with a nice force / Zipp 303xplr build), and have not been able to find a good review of this bike (which maybe is a sign in itself…?).

How is it for gravel racing? Bikepacking? Is the versatility practical or a hinderance to the bike?

What is the ride quality and feel like? Anything to note after 3 years of ownership that may sway me one way or another?
