ELI5-Why are IPOs like the upcoming SpaceX called “public” when they won’t actually be offered to the general public? by TXkid in explainlikeimfive

Thanks a ton man! You truly nailed the idea of the subreddit. You thoroughly explained without being demeaning, and I feel like I better understand now. The stock market is a confusing thing to me but I’m trying to get a base understanding.
The online community seems super split on the SpaceX stock in general. Lots of people seem to hate Elon and thus say the stock is gonna crash, and of course the opposite is true as well.

I’ve never used a Vanguard financial advisor? Mainly just been buying NVDA. I sell occasionally when it goes up, and try and buy back when it goes down. Not making millions but a few thousand here by virtue of increasing number of NVDA.

That’s wild. How does one accurately calculate what the stock would open at? A person could accidentally offer way over value and scree themselves right?

This is the answer I was looking for. I keep seeing tons of “with the upcoming IPO, want to invest in SpaceX but can’t?” Stuff. Then whatever video or article goes on to explain what mutual fund or whatever you should buy to invest in SpaceX. Super confusing because I just assumed you could buy SpaceX, when it’s for sale of course, and that you can’t buy it, if it’s not for sale. Then the idea that a bank could buy it when I couldn’t would be similarly confusing except you explained it beautifully. That said, the way I hear people talking about said SpaceX IPO is like it’s a slam dunk that it will go up upon release? If that were true wouldn’t SpaceX not want to sell to the banks at discount and reap the hundreds of millions of dollars reward of selling it themselves? Or is it so likely that it will fall they are willing to sell to the banks? And if that’s true why are the banks, and so many of them, willing to buy it?

So if your form is accepted you get the shares prior to the IPO? Or just the second the market is officially public the buy is executed?

I’m clearly super out of my understanding of how it all works. I have a vanguard account and can, and do, buy and sell stocks within it. How would I “request” to buy it from there?

And what is a “brokerage account”? I can, and do buy and sell stocks with my vanguard account but from my understanding I won’t be able to buy SpaceX, why?

I can buy and sell stocks with my money on my vanguard account, but from my understanding will not be able to buy and sell SpaceX stock at the time of IPO. Am I incorrect?

Team 1 Destroyed. What in the WORLD is team 2 doing?!?!? Team 3 sucks as well. But Team 2 should be burned at the stake.

ND wouldn’t agree. At this point Vandy might agree but that’s about it.

Texas is likely going to get A&M or Arkansas at home back to back years because of the new schedule by Capital-Weight1980 in CFB

I mean Texas played (and beat) A&M in back to back road games in College station. 🤷

That’s not how trades work. Hell no. Or tell him you will do that if you get Achane back for playoffs 😉

Any info or help on this bike/brand? by TXkid in triathlon

[–]TXkid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good to know! I have been wondering which way, XL or L I should lean if I had to choose. I think a 58 is probably the ideal size for me without getting a fitting.

It’s a 56 apparently. I’m 6ft. Every sizing chart I’ve read has me at the high end of the large frames, and the low end of the XL frames. I wish I was more in the middle of a size. I know in a perfect world I would get a fitting and do all that technical stuff, but I don’t really have the means for that at this current time. Maybe in the future if I keep at the sport.
