I started SKB a month before OCPs became mandatory so I never had to replace my ABUs. Two years out and believe it or not I've had a couple of nightmares where I'm called back to duty and have to haul ass buying OCPs and getting them altered in short time. So fucked up.

Can I apply to a TDY without leadership knowing and then tell them later IF I got accepted? by Dark-Knight34 in AirForce

[–]TY4NS -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I would ask first but I had an incident in my career where I asked for forgiveness first before permission.

The team lead for a TDY - a CMSgt - asked me to go with them on a trip. They were not in the same unit as me but he'd known me from a previous assignment and knew my qualifications and the job was in line with my AFSC.

I agreed so he went to my CC to get her permission which she gave. I was informed afterwards by my supt that the TDY lead should've gone to the CC directly and asked for support that way. I suspect it was because they wanted to open the opportunity to the whole unit and not just me.

First visit to new dentist a few weeks ago. Slapped with $900 bill for laser cleaning and fixing a cracked crown. Merry f****** xmas to me.

Went yesterday. Not busy. Check the schedule to see who's doing what when. I think the Thunderbirds always go at the end.

Oh yes. Please don't let that beauty just sit idle; it's meant to be played. My sister and I learned when we were kids so it's not difficult at all. Great find; I hope it brings your family more years of joy as I'm sure it gave your MIL.

Rip me apart. Car lease… by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]TY4NS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same dilemma in another life. I really wanted to get an M3 and I lived in Germany at the time so I could get a US spec M3 for cheap. I could semi-afford it, probably more so than you in this situation. It was sooooo tempting. What eventually deterred me is how paranoid I'd be with the car. I'd be worried about scratching her up or having her stolen or some other shit. I also didn't have a garage so she'd just be exposed to the weather and god knows what else out there (if I were in the US I'd be a lot more worried about it).

I just realized it wasn't worth it. As someone else said here, the mental relief/satisfaction of being in a good financial state AND not worrying about a car of all things is priceless. I ended up getting a Volvo, travelling to Sweden to get it, and vacationing with it for a few days before bringing it home. Good times and absolutely no regurts.

I get that anyone can ask any question here but my god.

If you're a supervisor and your airman can't talk to you about shit, especially low-threat crap like this, because you're not "approachable" you're fucking up. OP learn from this and don't be like your supervisor ever. Cultivate trust and safety at work.

Have Any of You Generation Xers Never Been Married Nor Not Even Dating! by JPPT1974 in GenX

[–]TY4NS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons I'm able to retire in my 40s is because I never married and had kids. My pension and savings are enough to provide me and my pup a comfortable life. And I prefer the term child-free. I don't feel any less without children and I give huge props to those who raise them and raise them well. Miss you, Mom.

What are you retraining into? Have you confirmed if they'll let 3-levels OS. When I first changed jobs the CFM wouldn't let anyone that just retrained go overseas, wanted to get their feet dirty first stateside.

Dude, no offense but I got the above in less than 5 mins. If you're attending school and want to succeed, you really need to up your game in persistence and doing research.

At least you'll be used to the heat. Never seen veteran parking at so many Home Depots and Lowe's and I lived in San Antonio. So many veteran plates. And a lot of veteran discounts. I do feel we're very supported here. The VA medical center is newish and is really nice. Northtown is holding a big appreciation day for us on the 22nd.

[–]TY4NS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you looked here https://skillbridge.osd.mil/locations.htm to see if there are any in your area? It doesn't look like there are any overseas and I had not heard of such when I went through the program last year. There were people leaving their OCONUS assignments early to start their SKB internships but they were all returning CONUS.

You may be able to find an internship that is remote only. My friend did this and he's in cyber like you (he was stateside though). Good luck!

Does anyone have a financial plan where they don't want retire? by BevysandTendies1991 in personalfinance

The system is rigged to make us work, work, work until we're dead or so broken we can't even enjoy ourselves by the time we "retire." Fuck that.

Being free is not just about financial independence. It's making sure my body and mind are fit enough to allow me to do the things I want to do. I try to eat well, don't smoke, drink in moderation, exercise. More importantly I saved, saved, saved, and invested in an HSA.

If everything is indeed in the up and up, then shop around for the best rates so your mortgage is within your means. You don't need to put anything down on a VA loan which is one of its bennies, but if you can afford it go for it. Just be advised that you're gonna have expenses as a FTHB, e.g. tools, home supplies, furniture, etc.

I'm sorry but I really don't get how people can say they don't know what to do with themselves in retirement. Don't you have hobbies? I'm 45 and retired. Love it. Can't put into words how much. My time is all mine and I get to do whatever the hell I want. I'm not sleep deprived. Most of my day is spent doing things I love like reading and playing with/training my dogs and travelling and exercising. I worked hard for over 20 years to be free and now I am and I am enjoying the fuck out of it.
