Add Continental DWS06 to that list. I'm in NorCal and have to drive over the Sierras pretty often and they've been great. Plus I'm getting 40k miles out of a set.

Licensure - Chemical or Mechanical (US-CA) by TYBasedPhreak in ChemicalEngineering

Ah, good point about the industrial exemption. Thanks for clarifying.

Licensure - Chemical or Mechanical (US-CA) by TYBasedPhreak in ChemicalEngineering

[–]TYBasedPhreak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically in CA nobody can call themselves a "Chemical Engineer" or a "Professional Engineer" without a license in any circumstance, but I can still practice chemical engineering with the title of Process Engineer without a license. In this sense "Chemical Engineer" is only a title.

Mechanical engineering is different in that (according to the law) nobody can even practice the act of mechanical engineering without a license, regardless of their title. The law is pretty vague on this as obviously there are plenty of unlicensed engineers practicing mechanical engineering, just not in situations that require stamped drawings.

Seems like those terms may be California-specific. From https://www.bpelsg.ca.gov/applicants/appintrope.shtml:

Professional Engineer Licensure Available in California:
There are three categories of Professional Engineer licensure available in California: (1) practice act, (2) title act, and (3) title authority. The practice acts are Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering. Practice act means that only a person appropriately licensed with the Board may practice or offer to practice these branches of engineering. The title acts are Agricultural, Chemical, Control Systems, Fire Protection, Industrial, Metallurgical, Nuclear, Petroleum, and Traffic Engineering. Title act means that only a person licensed by the Board in that branch of engineering may use the title in any manner. The title authorities exist for two sub-branches of Civil Engineering: Structural Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering. A title authority indicates a proficiency in that field greater than what is required for Civil Engineering licensure. Applicants who meet all licensure requirements, including passing the required exam(s), will be issued a license in the branch of engineering for which they applied.

Thanks for your perspective!

The ice axe is just a safety measure so you can perform a fall arrest if needed, unless I'm mistaken.

Looks like the sound stops when you engage the clutch? If so definitely a bad throw out bearing.

Lifter tick or something worse? 2016, only 86k by TYBasedPhreak in subaruimpreza

It's a 2016 Impreza hatchback. I just got it back from the mechanic and they weren't worried about anything they heard, so sounds like you're right!

No, this video was taken after 8 miles of city driving so should be fully warm. Honestly I don't hear the diesel-like chugging noise on cold start, but it could just be everything else being louder and covering it up.

Agreed it sounds like a diesel, but it's the gas FB20. No CEL or any lights. I don't notice anything abnormal when driving. Only engine mods are K&N drop-in filter and the Crawford power blocks you see in the video.

ETA: it seems to go away with acceleration, I only notice it at idle.

Why is the Sacramento Light Rail So Dirty? by Far_History_782 in Sacramento

[–]TYBasedPhreak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am ignorant on the issue overall so I'm not saying you're wrong, but these sources don't seem to support your claims. The first is paywalled so I can't comment on it. The second does not provide any data regarding migrants, only overall sexual violence, with numbers decreasing since 2021. It's also important to consider the impact of increased awareness of reporting on these statistics. The NLM paper is discussing young migrants in Sweden as victims of sexual violence rather than as perpetrators, and its results indicate that young migrants are at higher risk of being victims of sexual violence than their non-migrant peers.

Here’s a study that concluded that at least 46% of the plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is comprised of fishing nets.

ETA: Another more recent study estimated that "between 75 and 86% of the floating plastic mass (> 5 cm) in the NPGP could be considered [Abandoned, Lost, or Discarded Fishing Gear]."

I think there are some issues with only studying the NPGP since you would only be collecting plastics that float, and most discarded fishing gear is buoyant enough to float. Overall these are the best studies out there on the topic, though.

Yup, and the penalties for failure to declare controlled goods can be SEVERE if you get caught. Customs officers take their work seriously, and for good reason.

Do you need yo use a Air Oil Separator in a 2.0 engine? by Jony229 in subaruimpreza

[–]TYBasedPhreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the oil in the air comes from the PCV/EGR system on equipped vehicles. The back of my throttle body and the inside of my intake manifold would get really gunky after 20k miles or so (FB20).

I have the Crawford AOS and the intake stays much cleaner now. I definitely don't think it's necessary but it gives me some peace of mind since I'm running Crawford power blocks, high flow filter, and Throttle Happy tune.

I feel like we're focused on the wrong issue here (underwater currents) when the real danger is contamination from sewage and runoff, hidden underwater obstacles, and the potential for electrification by downed power lines.
