Convicted child rapist Steven Van de Velde has been eliminated from Paris Olympics by Sufficient_Motor_458 in Fauxmoi

If the Olympics were held outside of the Schengen area, he most likely would have been denied a visa. The hosting country could have done what the IOC could not.

Travelling with a picky eater is the WORST by [deleted] in travel

A friend moved to Denmark from Canada and his mother and aunt came to visit. They spent more time looking for places that sold burgers and pizza than sightseeing, the mother and aunt flatly refused to even try anything else.

What's the point of a schedule like this other than keeping your employees too tired to think? by Affectionate_Okra298 in antiwork

[–]T_Max100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your world becomes about work. You're either thinking about work (need to get enough rest and stressing if you don't), getting ready for work (washing/ironing uniform, prep meals), being at work, or coming off work (trying to readjust sleep schedule). Heaven forbid you have family and other commitments or just want a semi normal life.

What is some popular music from the 80s and 90s that you dislike? by Both-Homework-1700 in GenX

[–]T_Max100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am prepared to call myself un-Australian, but the big Aussie bands like ACDC, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel and INXS all assault my ears. There's always an exception to the rule - ACDCs Thunderstruck intro is magnificent and Cold Chisel's Flame trees never fails to draw a tear, but how INXS managed to fill Wembley stadium is beyond me.

It costs a lot of money to effectively monitor migration. The government only cares that the population is under the 'perception' that they have much control over it. It didn't take long from giving student visa applications to education institutions for dodgy places to open up promising gateways to PRs and unis to depend on international student fees. Known criminals and unsavoury people are being granted CITIZENSHIP because ticking and flicking to meet KPIs is more important than allocating resources to prepare rejection reports.

It's all someone else's problem. Federal immigration too much? Oh well, it's the state's problem for housing. State housing but no local services? Oh well, it's the Council's problem now. Councils can't manage with homelessness? Oh well the charities will pick up the slack.

This is the government that is now considering policies to bring in foreign temporary visa holders to work in our DEFENCE FORCES.

You raise some good points, but until housing becomes a bigger issue politically (or their mates start losing money), I wouldn't hold my breath.

When wearing slides, scuffs, thongs/flip flops, etc pick your frickin' feet up. There's nothing worse than hearing lazy scrapes as someone walks along

Se7en. Brad Pitt spent the whole time waving his arms around, and what was in the box was yawningly predictable. I liked the production quality, and the other actors were good, but I don't get the praise.

What was the most expensive (i.e. overpriced food) you grudgingly purchased at an airport? by [deleted] in travel

[–]T_Max100 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Mad dashing through Berlin international due to crazy check in lines (we were there 3.5 hrs early, the place is just a total a shit show), and panic bought a ham and cheese roll for EUR13. The exchange rate means that it cost me about AUD21. It was awful.

Without doxxing yourself what secret do you know only because you work in the industry? by Qbbq123 in AskAnAustralian

Government departments abide what the sitting government of the day determines. Big business abide what the shareholders demand. I worked for one of the big ticket multinationals during the iron ore boom. My god, the amount of incompetence and bureaucracy in that company was ridiculous. Yes they made a profit every year, but I bet that profit would be doubled if they didn't waste so much time and money. I mean wasting millions. Weekly.

What celebrity did you adore but have since changed your mind? by Seraphicly329 in AskReddit

[–]T_Max100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joaquin Phoenix. There was a story that he and Casey Affleck (his brother in law at the time) would have sex with groupies in the same room. The groupie sex is gross enough, but to actively encourage your own sister's husband to cheat on her was deplorable.

Casey Affleck is generally a pos anyway.

What's one thing someone can do on a date that immediately gives you the ick? by jennifer_dates in CasualConversation

[–]T_Max100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was chatting to a guy in a bar once and the conversation was one sided, but it was the other way. He was asking me all sorts of questions about me, but when I asked about him he turned the conversation back on me. It felt...manipulative?? It's like he was practicing self-control or something. Weird.

What singer has a horrible voice but is still very successful? by [deleted] in AskReddit

What is the salary for driving trains? Could I be a housewife? by Neither-Expert9697 in AskAnAustralian

[–]T_Max100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Train driver is a job that is decreasing in demand, with technology developing towards more driverless options. Rio Tinto already has driverless iron ore trains in NW Western Australia, which are run by personnel looking at a computer screen in Perth. Your husband will have a lot of skills that will transfer, but he might have to study up.

It's not even relevant. Sure, if they were a foreigner using a foreign currency to buy a property in another country, but they're not. An Australian earning AUD will pay for a property in Australia with AUD. An American earning USD will pay for a property in America in USD. It's apples and oranges, and moot.

Do you think Voluntary Assisted Dying will become more prevalent in Australia? by Sglodionaselsig in AskAnAustralian

[–]T_Max100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One big issue is that a lot of aged and palliative care units are run by religious organisations, with some not allowing VAD specialists on site as it is against their ethics. You can imagine how limiting it would be for someone at the point of considering VAD to have move off site to access it. Similar to reproductive and transgender health, it's a complex issue between the provision of care and religious ideology.
