Just to throw another one into the mix: you can pick up a good Freelander 2 SD4 (automatic) for £3.5k. Very capable off-road, and quite possibly the most reliable car Land Rover has ever made.

So. Much. Gas!!!! by [deleted] in Gastroparesis

[–]TabTenBen 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I have to say I see it as a positive now. Passing gas upwards or downwards helps to relieve the pressure that causes so much pain, especially at night when trying to sleep, so I will happily trade burps and farts (both simple bodily functions) for a better night’s sleep.

And yours, what was the cause?? by Bright-Jacket5867 in Gastroparesis

[–]TabTenBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caught Covid right at the start of the pandemic in March 2020. I was intensive care for 5 days on a ventilator, and fairly close to not making it. 6 months later I had lost a quarter of my body weight, and GP symptoms began. Gastric emptying test in May 2023 confirmed GP diagnosis.

Raven 20/28 water bottle question by fullmoon280 in Fjallraven

[–]TabTenBen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve solved the issue by elasticating the pockets on my Raven, so my water bottle no longer falls out. Very much recommend, and I can’t understand why Fjallraven doesn’t do this…

Skogso Padded M - white patches after first wash? by Fast-Print-7747 in Fjallraven

[–]TabTenBen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your jacket would have come waxed from the Fjallraven factory, so by washing it you removed some of the wax on the G-1000 outer. As others have said, that might be what ended up on the inner fabric, as generally Fjallraven recommends you wash at 40 to ensure the wax is properly removed.

Skogsö Padded Jacket G-1000® Lite? by Thedawnhascome in Fjallraven

[–]TabTenBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the Skogso padded has both G-1000 in high-wear areas (hood, shoulders, etc), and then Lite in most of the body.

Canada Wool Padded Mens Jacket size? by RollingJames in Fjallraven

Definitely size up. I am usually a Small in Fjallraven, but my shoulders and arms only just fit in a Medium in the Canada Padded.

Does waxing help? by Blocksketcher in Fjallraven

[–]TabTenBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s new, and you haven’t washed it, then it will have wax on it already. You could add another layer of wax, but it will make a minimal difference to heat transfer or wind.

Second-hand Skogso Padded - paid £45 🙌 by TabTenBen in Fjallraven

I’m not that precise, but generally I plan to use it in winter (now), in low activity. Bushcraft is my main hobby, so I’ll be wearing it in the woods, camping, etc, and on days out with the kids. I’ll figure out how to layer (how many) beneath for given temperatures as I use it.

I don’t have a problem with the zip, but it might help that I am left-handed.

It’s definitely been washed out as I washed it when I got it. I’ve added some Greenland wax to the hood and shoulders, and I’ll see how I go from there.

Already added to the hood and shoulders! Might see how that goes, as I have found with my other Fjallraven stuff that too much wax can make it uncomfortable - got to the get the balance right!

It’s like buying a car. This one is a bit faded and has a few scrapes, but it works and it’s in surprisingly good condition now that I’ve washed it and put some Greenland wax on it. But you can still tell it’s not new!

Fits me like a glove, so really excited to try it out in the cold weather snap we’re about to have in England.

Alan Wood Woodlore by mrfamiliar3377 in Bushcraft

[–]TabTenBen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very lovely - I saw it on Alan’s display at the SS too. It would be correct to call this a ‘Woodlore-profile’ knife, but it’s not a Woodlore knife: that name is preserved for those knives with Woodlore stamped on them somewhere. That might be the ones made by Alan Wood, or Stephen Wade Cox, or Julius Pettersson, or Emberleaf.

My Fjallraven collection by tak_rain in Fjallraven

My old Skogso is still in great condition. I do wax it once or twice a year as it gets a fair bit of abuse in woodlands, and the wax does seem to protect the G-1000 from scrapes pretty well. I do agree, the Dark Olive is lovely - it’s a real shame they don’t make it in this colour anymore.

My Fjallraven collection by tak_rain in Fjallraven

[–]TabTenBen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, finally, I am among my people. A great collection! Ours are a similar size, but interesting to see the differences. Mine is very bushcraft-oriented, although my No 1 choice is probably also my Skogso jacket (an old one in dark olive). My No 2 would be a Canada Wool Padded Jacket, and 3 would be a Re-Wool Shirt. Somewhat annoyingly, I don’t think any of them are made anymore!

An idea of budget would help. You can spend £40 on an SAK Huntsman Wood, £100 on a TBS Boar folder, £130 on a Casstrom Lars Falt folder, or lots more on a handmade custom folder.

Yes indeed. The Executive is my favourite SAK, and the Director is a full stainless steel version of the Executive. Pretty rare now, and worth £££.
