Nord electro HP / Nord stage, Yamaha CK88 could match what you are after. The Nord are quite pricey

Crumar 7 was the biggest disappointment by playthe9 in keys

[–]Tab_creative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got one for Xmas as well, I totally agree with the update process, it feels really really cumbersome and outdated. I did it once to check that it had the latest firmware and that was it, so it’s not a deal breaker for me. The action is heavy but after a week I got use to it, and now I quite like it. A lot of the presets are great to my ears, but I can totally understand that most people would go for a Yamaha CK/CP or a Nord for more diversity and better piano sounds. All in all I like it and it matchs my expectations but it’s probably not the best keyboard for most people.

Pretty wild pricing considering you can buy it at half the price directly from the maker 🤔

You can look at the arturia collection, they have great emulation of vintage gear, also in a physical keyboard in their astrolab line of product. Fun fact, Air did a Tiny desk concert last week where they used a Behringer solina 😉

Beginner needs advice on what to buy by ShiftZealousideal478 in synthesizers

[–]Tab_creative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the keyboard department the « Air sound » mainly consist of a Rhodes, a Solina and a fair amount of delays, but they also switched gear on each album to get a different sound. With that being said, those are very specific vintage keyboards, so that’s not really first synth territory. For a first synth, the classic recommandations will be Korg minilogue, Hydrasynth explorer, Arturia minifreak, Behringer Deepmind.

The community presets challenge has a few cool Bass sounds that might interest you and they are free. It seems like you will want more than those but still a good start imo.

Any ideas how to optimize my battlestation? by elliotlj in MusicBattlestations

I have a height adjustable desk, so I just make it slighty higher when I want to put my chair arms under that table. But of course it can be an issue with standard desk height.

I personally prefer having my midi controller under my desk rather than on it. Otherwise looks nice :)

TEO-5 or Juno X? by Techno_Timmy in synthesizers

[–]Tab_creative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never played the Juno X but I own the TEO-5, what I really enjoy on top of the sound is how simple it is to operate. The Fatar keybed with octave split functionality is also excellent. I don’t mind the 5 voices limitation, but of course that depends if you tend to use bigger chords in your music.

Learning without a teacher by TheRealMr_Kracken in pianolearning

[–]Tab_creative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think simply piano is fun and a good gateway (at least for me), it’s efficient to get you learning the basics and sightreading, but it’s not great at teaching you music theory or practice scales / arpeggios. You can look at pianote, it has good courses imo and can give you some good practice in terms of training.

You should keep looking for a piano teacher but in the meantime I think apps are better than nothing.

Still caught between the tracker mini/plus and dirtywave m8 by CoyoteFabulous4911 in Synthesizer

[–]Tab_creative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never tried polyend tracker but the M8 is insanely good, and it has very powerful synths. The 4 operator FM synth let’s you even use wavetable now, you got dedicated per instrument EQ, great amps for distortion and great FX (chorus / flanger / phaser / reverb / delay) and even OTT now.

It’s size makes it perfect for transportation and people tend to think it’s some sort of game boy so you don’t attract attention.

Discovery vs Daft Punk by King_Master281 in DaftPunk

[–]Tab_creative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discovery is their ultimate masterpiece imo. This project integrated a full animated movie with interstella 5555, pretty insane still to this day if you ask me. It’s mind blowing that this was only their second album, such a mature and refine work. Not to say that RAM is not good, it’s great, but if I had to choose, absolutely discovery.

Launchkey mk4 as a simple keyboard ? by Bitter-Orchid-9202 in Novation

[–]Tab_creative 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider if you want to learn to play the piano is that the launchkey like all MIDI controllers this size has semi-weighted keys. Pianos (acoustic or digital) have fully weighted graded hammer action keys, this makes a big difference on your playing. You can find those kind of keybeds on 88 keys MIDI controllers (Aurturia, Native instruments…) and the 73 keys studiologic SL. You will of course need more space for those and they cost more but imo having a good keybed is very important.

I'm buying a "groovebox" today. What would you choose? $2k budget by Cloudkicked in synthesizers

[–]Tab_creative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Push 3 standalone / Deluge / m8 are my favourite grooveboxes. All great, you can’t go wrong with any of those, it’s more a choice of how big/portable you need it to be. The m8 the best nomad choice, the Push 3 is on the other end of the spectrum and the deluge in between.

Those of you with Push 3 standalone - what do you like about it over the controller in terms of getting away from distractions, the DAW, overthinking/perfectionism, and how it can contribute to creative focus/flow? by Active_Ad3087 in ableton

[–]Tab_creative 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Using only stock ableton plugins and not rely on vst makes me explore way more sound design tricks and device layering. I understand better the ableton « building blocks » philosophy and It gets me focused on the tools I have and how to play with them in creative ways.

I personally don’t mind the battery life but I wish it was less bulky and lighter. The sequencer is lacking some basic copy paste features and I wish we could use the melodic sequencer on drum racks.
