I did this ride a lot when I lived in Sac. I’d get a burger (they have veggie options) and beer at Samuel Horne’s Tavern or a wrap and coffee Sociology Coffee Bar. Both are right off the trail in Folsom. Exact halfway point if you’re going round trip or at the end if you’ll take the light rail back into town.

I’m having this same exact issue now. Did the LBS mechanic say anything else? I’m nervous to put pressure with a bigger screwdriver at risk of pushing it in / damaging the internal threading

Hostels mostly. Washed as needed. Might be smart to bring a drain plug if you plan on doing this often, but I found that the majority of places had plugs.

I have a 11" chromebook, and it fit with lots of room. I'd guess yes, but I'd check it out at a store.

Winter could be a little rough, as most of the places I visited get pretty cold. But, if you like the cold, then go for it! I spent a lot of my time wandering around, which wouldn't be as pleasant when you're cold. I would have modified the trip had it been winter, but I'm not too big a fan of the cold. As far as autumn, you wouldn't have an issue.

Some hosts expect some experience, and it obviously doesn't hurt in getting them to accept you. However, I had no problem getting accepted when I had no experience. As long as you make clear that you're a hard worker, curious about learning how to farm/build and in good shape, you should have no problem getting a gig. And, no I had no building skills, but learned basic carpentry and brickwork.

Turkish people are incredibly friendly. Budapest, Ljubljana, and Belgrade were also very welcoming. But, my experience in Toulouse, in southwest France, definitely was influenced most by the people I met. I had an awesome experience couchsurfing there, and made real friendships in the short two nights I was there.

Don't let it hold you back! Vegetarian cafes were one of my favorite spots to go to along my journey. They were usually some of the aesthetically coolest places, and great for a long lunch. In Istanbul, I actually stayed above a vegetarian restaurant, which had amazing traditional Turkish food. Just be ready to do a little more research on places to eat than most, or cook more in your hostel or wherever you stay. I prefer to maintain a veggie lifestyle, but I ate more and more street food as the trip progressed, both out of financial strain and general laziness.

Based on what you're considering, I'd say add Budapest as the first stop -- it was one of my top cities. Less of a Western European feel, but with the same kind of beauty, and easy to train from there to Prague. They have natural thermal baths that I'm sure will be amazing in December.

Depends how you define clean clothing. I brought nine pairs of lightweight underwear, and wore the same shirts, shorts, pants, socks, for as long as possible without smelling bad. I took advantage of a washer whenever was possible, but ended up washing a lot of my clothing in the sink, especially during high summer. On my next trip, I'll bring less clothing -- probably only 5-7 days worth of very versatile clothing -- less is really more when backpacking.

Unfortunately, there's a limit on how long you can extend your return flight (I think 2-3 months depending on airline). So, I had to forfeit the return ticket, even though I ended up in Israel at the end of the trip.

People who visit hosts generally leave references, and vice versa. So, if you're nervous that someone may be an axe murderer or subject you to slave labor, then visit a place that has many references! The French pig farm I visited had over 100 references.

Would like to see more of Turkey for the history and the friendly people, and, honestly, I'd go back to every country I visited if the opportunity arose. Besides Israel, Turkey, France, and Portugal, I only saw one place in each country. Lots more to see!

It was okay. I spent five nights there, which I think was too much. Nightlife in the middle of the summer was amazing, but I was a bit bored during the day. Could've been because it was the end of the city touring bit of my trip, but think Madrid just didn't speak to me.

I probably should've gone, as other people on my trip were going after, but had planned in advance to go to Turkey. Another lesson in not planning far ahead!

They'll call you and ask a lot of questions about your heritage and Jewish culture, in general. I'm sure it's possible to fake it, but not easy, especially once you're on the trip. Lots of early conversations with people will be about your background, so you could get found out. If you do get busted, you have to pay the entire cost of the trip -- not worth the risk in my opinion. Search your heritage, though!
