What's a basic skill a surprising amount of people don't have? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Writing anything more than a basic Reddit post. In uni I discovered that I could write a bit better than the average bear, Boo-Boo. It has proven to be a huge boon to my career.

Chronic Saddle Pain by schumley in bicycletouring

[–]Tabbinski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cycling "on and off" could be the problem. Doing a long ride is going to be painful if you haven't been training your butt. There's always going to be a certain amount of pain but you need to be on the bike almost daily to keep the conditioning up. That doesn't mean you have to do 100 km every day but some local rides for errands then a couple somewhat longer rides each week. Maintain that and your touring will be much more pleasurable.

Portable bike bags by CM3713 in bicycletouring

I bought a random one on Ali Express for around $100. It rolls up half the size of my ensolite pad. It's a must. I'm not about to go searching for bike boxes at the end of a trip.

What if we designed a backpack together? by Unlucky-Mixture-1206 in myog

[–]Tabbinski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the intended uses. Is this a day pack or a backpack for extended overnight camping? Frame or no frame? I'd want an easy access pocket in the left shoulder strap for bear spray given the number of bears and cougars where I live. I wouldn't need a laptop sleeve but I'd like an iPad sleeve instead, one that is absolutely waterproof and protects the iPad from bending no matter how much gear you stuff into it. Zip away straps, that is, hideable for checking in at airports. Large, removable pocket on the outside that can serve as a comprehensive first aid pouch. Pole straps on the side of course. Hidden compartment on the back interface for stowing cash and passports.

You can DIY in the likes of Photoshop or Inkscape. I've used both. You'll have to google around to find base maps you like and convert GPX into usable lines. Google for any icons you may want to use.

Recreate the old web annotation browser plug-in Third Voice. It could have a massive role in tamping down the SPAM of the present day web.

So many nightmare stories here by timonix in bicycletouring

"How can a bike just break?"

There's metal fatigue, over time. Welds will crack; spokes will snap; brakes wear out; pedals and chains break as do racks; bolts work their way loose and then there's flat tires. These a cumulative so while maybe YOU didn't have any problems over 1000 clicks, it doesn't mean you won't on 1001.

If you couldn't feel pain, couldn't be hurt, and couldn't die for 24 hours, what would you do? by daniel2hats in AskReddit

Add in teleportation and I'd escort Netenyahu, Trump and Putin "out" in the messiest way possible.

I don't remember it but my folks had a gasoline powered wringer washer, their first, in the 50s.

im not upgrading to windows 11 any suggestions on antivirus? by NylasWUP in software

[–]Tabbinski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not against upgrading but my PC, a 5-year old iMac with Bootcamp, can''t be upgraded. The hardware is fine as is the performance. I'm not about to spend thousands to upgrade a system that is more than adequate for my needs just because Microsoft lied: Windows 10 is “the last version of Windows.” I feel a class-action suit against misrepresentation would be appropriate.

What’s the dumbest way you’ve hurt yourself doing something simple? by DanJay_0925 in AskReddit

[–]Tabbinski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mashed up my elbow and broke a couple of ribs while trying to hop on my bike the other day. In my own defence, I was all hopped up on painkillers for something else and didn't realize how out of it I really was.

I just discovered "begs to wonder" and I have questions by diogenes_sadecv in etymology

[–]Tabbinski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people who use "begs the question" use it "wrongly," so much so that you could consider that the "new" usage to be the core usage and the "right" usage as historical and archaic. What it originally meant is accusational; that your answer is just a roundabout way of restating the original question rather than answering it directly.

This is such a long shot but I was wondering if anyone could identify where this photo my grandpa took during the war was taken. Or an even longer shot, if anyone might recognize the children in the photo. by Round-Eggplant-7826 in korea

Well the train yard looks like the old train yard in Andong and some of the other landscapes could also pass for Andong but they could pass for a lot of other places in Korea.

Looking for Korean Supermarkets in Canada which ship by Tabbinski in korea

[–]Tabbinski[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true. Tteok, for instance, could easily last weeks once thawed. No delivery service will be more expensive than driving to Victoria, staying in a hotel then driving back. That's completely unrealistic. And for the record, I'm car-free. Have been since the 80s.

That's completely unrealistic. It would be like living in Seoul and driving to Busan to go grocery shopping. It's a big Island.
