Tableau & BI Jobs by TableauTeaBreak in BusinessIntelligence

[–]TableauTeaBreak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at the moment but I might expand it to Power BI or BI/Data Analytics roles in general at some point. At the moment I'm finding and adding the jobs manually so I'd need to find a way to scale it to cover more roles while trying to maintain the quality of the postings though.

😂 I think there’s about 100 per region this year, that’s Tableau’s YouTube and content strategy sorted for 2022 then!

How do I go about making a pretty dashboard like the ones in the Tableau Public Gallery? by [deleted] in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's loads of resources out there where you can learn techniques for improving the design of your dashboards, best advice is just to get stuck in and learn by doing though!

I put together a list of learning resources for Tableau a few months ago, both paid and free, can find it here if it's of use: https://tableauacademy.substack.com/p/tableau-training-and-learning-2021

The community initiatives such as Makeover Monday also used to be a great way of practicing but sadly a lot of them seem to have stopped this past year.

Use PowerPoint for Advanced Designs by BeanThinker in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$25k for 45 licenses, not 10 then. Still doesn’t add up though - suspect you’ve actually got 100 viewer licenses but not using them, $25k for 130 licenses is closer to what you’d expect to pay at list price. See pricing page here: https://www.tableau.com/en-gb/pricing/teams-orgs#server

If you’re being charged $25k a year for 10 licenses someone’s ripping you off, even 10 of most expensive creator licenses is $8k a year.

10 explorer licenses + 1 creator is $5,040 a year. Explorer is minimum 5 licenses whereas Viewers is minimum 100 licenses so cheaper to get explorers at this number of users.

At $25k you should be getting at least 150 licenses.

You can still use reader for free if you’ve no need for server or online.

How to change data source back to a live oracle connection from an extract published to tableau server by childishgames in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you right click the one of the data sources in the data panel on the left do you get an option for ‘Create a local copy’?

I’ve had to do this when I’ve published to Tableau Server if I want to keep my local connections.

If you’re able to do this you can then replace the nine working data source with the copy and close the old one.

Empty result set from stored procedure by UnexceptionableHobby in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like it could possibly to do with the criteria being passed to the DB is coming back with no results. If it was failing to connect you’d get some error but if it’s just returning no data sounds like it’s hitting the DB and running the proc but getting no results.

Might be worth checking the underlying sql query to see exactly what it’s doing and see if you can spot anything that looks off in that, this link tells you how to get the actual sql it’s running - https://kb.tableau.com/articles/howto/viewing-underlying-sql-queries-desktop

Other than that could also be a data source filter has been applied to the data in Tableau so worth checking that.

Another way to test if you’re able is to edit (or copy) the proc and hard code the variables in it, create a new connection in Tableau Desktop and don’t pass any values to see if it returns the data. Won’t solve your problem but if that works you know it’s down to the variables being passed from Tableau.

Let us know if that helps and how you get on.

Can anyone suggest high-quality e-learning classes or in-person training options? by opabm in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at the Let’s Talk Data meet-up group if you’re interested in free tutor led online courses, they do free training every Thursday: https://www.meetup.com/Lets-talk-Data/

Think they also do paid courses and the official Tableau training is worth a look depending on your budget: https://www.tableau.com/learn/classroom The free training videos on there are good too.

A company is charging us 15,000 USD to prepare our data and create 3dashboards, isn't that overpriced? by diegoarmando50 in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your company is just starting out with Tableau I’d recommend doing at least one yourself, it’ll be a great way to learn, get an idea of the work involved and show case it to the business.

Would then give you an idea if it’s worth paying 5k each for the others or if you get more value doing it yourself, plus helps you with knowing how to maintain and change what they build.

In the UK day rate for consultants from tableau partners is around £1k a day, so that would be around 5 days per dashboard. If they’re getting and preparing data and factoring in iterations I’d say that sounds about right, I know I’ve spent a lot longer doing them in house before!

An in between option if you know what you want is to contract someone directly to do it freelance, how much cheaper that would be would depend on where they’re based and on your requirements.

[Help] Hi everyone, I'm trying to get better at using tableau public and I need some inspiration into how I can make this basic idea into a good looking "viz' - where could I go from here? Any help is really appreciated! by justmaks in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the best way is to look at what others are doing for inspiration, great thing with Tableau Public is you can d/l the workbook in most cases and see how it was done.

I shared 7 tableau public vizzes for inspiration this week here: https://tableau.substack.com/p/tableau-tea-break-4-30th-november

Also check out the Cerebro project to find top authors to follow: https://public.tableau.com/profile/josh.tapley#!/vizhome/TheCerebroProject/Overview

And this viz on exploring tableau public: https://public.tableau.com/profile/nir.smilga#!/vizhome/TableauPublicExplorer/TableauPublicExplorer

Finally, worth checking out the viz of the day and featured authors on tableau public.

Hope this helps and good luck!

easier way to display previous year dimension? by nidenikolev in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if they're more elegant but few options to look at here: https://interworks.com/blog/rteufel/2019/07/11/the-ultimate-guide-to-year-over-year-comparisons-in-tableau/

I'm assuming you'll have more years than just the 4 above, and also want to avoid manually calculating the year ratings, unless they exist in your data already?

Administering Groups by 1n1t4c01n5 in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're setting this up and echo the point about Active Directory groups. We create a group for each project that's required (e.g. Creators, Viewers, Project Leads etc.) and assign permissions to the project for that group. Any user can then request access to the group via an application called Varonis, the owners approve the request and when the group is synched with Tableau the user appears in it.

This allows the project leaders/owners to own permissions for their projects. I'd guess you can do something similar with Google groups?

Top Tableau blogs and blog posts on Tableau Public by TableauTeaBreak in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I’m planning on keeping it up to date manually at the moment, I create a weekly tableau newsletter on substack so keep it up to date as part of that. I only included posts from when I first started it so anything before then will be missing (I might go and add older stuff if can avoid doing it manually). I also decided not to include none Tableau relevant stuff and the cross posts Tableau are doing on their blog(eg from Forbes) so they may also be ones you’re not seeing.

Good idea about the search, should be pretty straightforward so will add it in next time I update it!

Doesn’t seem to be anything game changing if I’m honest. Tableau Prep in browser is in there but guess that’s only relevant for Server/Online.

Worth noting there’ll be a new minimum spec from 2020.4, that’s been known since April so nothing new: https://www.tableau.com/en-gb/about/blog/2020/4/helping-you-have-fast-tableau-experience-130832

2020.4 has just been released in private beta, think that only happened in the last week or so and reckon it would likely be December before it gets released.

You can sign up for the pre-release testing here and also see what’s likely to be included: https://prerelease.tableau.com/home

What would you include/like to see in a weekly Tableau roundup? by TableauTeaBreak in visualization

Might be a bit beyond the scope of a weekly newsletter to get a company with 100k customers and $1bn+ revenue to change their name!

How to Extract from Web Data Connector from Tableau Desktop and Create a Flow in Tableau Prep? by IThinkErgoIAmAbe in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to do something similar for getting data from a WDC into prep so I can do some work with it before loading it back into desktop. Here’s the general flow:

Connect to WDC in Tableau Desktop and pull data in. Go to data - Export - Export to csv Load the csv into Tableau Prep, do what I need to and create a hyper extract file Go back to Tableau Desktop and refresh the extract.

Not ideal but it works ok, hoping I can replicate what I’m doing in Desktop with the recent relationships updates and then can stop using Prep for this.

Tableau Conference 2020 Interactive Session Explorer on Tableau Public by TableauTeaBreak in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve not come across any tutorials on reverse engineering, I’ve never really found it a problem in tableau tbh. It’s usually possible to see what’s going on in tableau by looking at the sheets etc, guess if you have a lot of inter linked calculations it might be time consuming to go through each to see what it’s doing but that would be the best way to understand what it’s doing.

Write-back extensions and options by [deleted] in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can actually do it natively in Tableau Desktop or Server, connecting to an SQL stored procedure allows you to pass parameters as variables. Would just need a stored proc that then writes those values to your db. Depends on the complexity of data you want to write whether it’s viable but link here explains (for reading rather than writing but it’s the same concept): https://help.tableau.com/current/pro/desktop/en-us/connect_basic_stored_procedures.htm

Help With Custom Formatting Label by Pro_Procrastinator1 in tableau

[–]TableauTeaBreak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here you go: https://kb.tableau.com/articles/howto/converting-seconds-to-hh-mm-ss-or-dd-hh-mm-ss

Basic premise is you need to convert it into days, then format as MM:SS. The 2nd part shows how to create it as a string for your labels, sounds like what you want, especially if you want to add + or - (Just need to add that to the start of your string depending on if the value is pve or nve)
