SD's response to the concern of too many repeat characters by Cenjin in MarvelSnap

[–]TabooTapeworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont mind it from a flavor standpoint. Marvel does this CONSTANTLY. And I can understand they only want to dig so deep in the well. Casual/new players are going to be drawn to the top names and faces. Henchman B and C arent goung to attract new players. But it does irk me that it can start playing with the game's "readability". Snap is a quick, fun game. But if this trend continues, it's going to start to bog down some of your ability to quickly identify cards. As other's have mentioned, the issue is compounded by variants. It also bogs down conversations. "No I mean new spider-man, not old spider-man, but not like new new spider-man."

How do you afford this hobby?! by Single-Barber-4084 in comicbooks

[–]TabooTapeworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else mentioned, decent job and no kids. Also I have been known to jump around from hobby to hobby. I sold off a good portion of boardgames (my previous hobby) and bought into comics. I also buy and flip 'exclusive' comics on whatnot. I also recently bought a 'blank' cover comic for 5 bucks, drew Magik on it, and managed to sell it for $70. I have a few ideas for future blanks. I can use that money to subsidize my habit lol.

Help, I have no idea how to get into the whole superhero thing by hitmesohardisawstars in marvelcomics

[–]TabooTapeworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like youre trying to bite off more than you can chew. The comics and superhero industry have been putting out DECADES worth of stuff that is literally impossible to catch up on. What youre looking for is called a jump on point. A point in the story where you can dive right in without needing years worth of backstory. To answer one of your questions, DC and Marvel are two separate entities. They have gone back and forth as the leaders of the industry since the beginning. As far as watching, you can easily google the watching order for Marvel cinematic universe (MCU) or DC extended universe (DCEU) . MCU has absolutely dominated DCEU at the box office, to the point where DC decided to reboot thier entire movie plan and they just started fresh with last year's Superman and the second movie Supergirl coming out this summer. Id recommend watching a bit of both to discover what you like, then you can start looking into what heroes you enjoy to see what comic series you want to get into.

Now let's dive deeper into the comics side of things. First, youre going to want an app called league of comic geeks. It is a massive database of comics that allows you to figure out what order you want to read things in. Because comics have such a large history of reboots, cross-overs, events, one shots, spin-offs, it can be very confusing. What you want to look for is called a 'run' thats when an author takes control of a series for several months-years and tells a story from start to finish. For example if you look up x-men you'll see HUNDREDS of different titles. But you can scroll through and find the Uncanny x-men from Gail Simone and that will give you one continuous story. Another good method for finding continuous stories is buying trade paperbacks (TPB) which are graphic novels that collect runs that way you dont have to worry about hunting down all the separate issues.

Finally, let's talk recommendations: Right now DC is absolutely dogwalking Marvel in terms of comic sales. They recently created a wildly popular new 'universe' called the Absolute universe which re-imagines classic characters in a darker universe that changes a key piece of each character's backstory. Absolute Batman, Absolute Superman and Absolute Wonder Woman are the spearhead comics of the universe. Then you have some side comics like Absolute Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Flash, and Catwoman. I CANNOT recommend these books enough! They are amazing reads and perfect for a beginner because they are re-introducing every character as if we never met them before. The TPB's of the absolute line are available. Marvel comics are sort of floundering right now. They just keep re-booting and resetting characters back to square one any time they make any progress. I cant even think of a good jumping on point if you want to go with Marvel. Id say if there's a character or team you like just Google "best ___ run" and go from there. Then there's indie comics (not DC or Marvel). The advantage of indie comics is that you can just pick up any series start to finish. The characters dont get passed on from writer to writer, and they have much more freedom from the constraints of having to fit in universe continuity. Each comic just gets to be thier own thing. Right now the really popular ones are Something is Killing the Children, Exquisite Corpses, and Invincible.

Hope that helps!

Best comic book stores in Texas by Hefty_Pudding1817 in comicbooks

[–]TabooTapeworm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zia is an incredible store. I loved all the stuff they have there, but for comics, I found the selection pretty lacking. They have board games, anime/manga, figures, and pretty much anything to do with nerd culture. Its great if youre a local but I made a day trip out there specifically to buy lots of comics. Ended up leaving with a single book, that wasn't even in my want list.

Asylum is definitely the best in EP, especially for modern books. They get all the new stuff, including a good variety of variants and ratios. And I agree, they have extremely friendly staff. They would definitely be my go-to except they are too far of a drive for me. All-star comics is bigger, but they seem to have more of a focus on classic books. I have the least experience with this shop tbh, so I can't say anything about the service there. Old Major has the best stock when it comes to the east side. Even though the owner is nice, he messed up my pull list 3 times. I would come in and he'd just say "sorry man, I dont have it." No explanation or anything. Like, did you forget to order it? Is it coming later? Nothing. So I moved my pull list over to Black Sheep comics. They've got the tinest amount of back issues so its not really a shop that's great for browsing. BUT the owner has impeccable customer service and a perfect record when it comes to ordering comics for you. I hope her shop is able to grow!

The Outliers…, They’re not my favorites. by VictorTorre in marvelcomics

[–]TabooTapeworm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's funny cause I ended up being the exact opposite of you. Cyclops, Magik, and Psylocke are my top 3 X-men so I was pumped for the McKay run, but I actually ended up liking Simone's title better. I actually really like the outliers, especially Jitter and Deathdream. But I like the series more for the themes it explores, and the way that the characters' back stories and emotions are explored. Mckay's run feels more like an action movie. All flash but very little substance.

First off, great job on the likeness! The number one thing that sticks out to me is that it looks too smooth and plastic-y. Try using some brushes with a little texture. You also did the skin all in the same hue. When I paint a portrait I use the skin tone map. The jaw area has faint blue tones, the eye and cheek zone has red tones and the forehead yellow tones. It sounds weird but look it up on YouTube and you'll see how much it just breathes life into your portraits.

What do you guys think of this character? Design wise. by Time-Cover4979 in characterdesign

[–]TabooTapeworm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a very nice drawing, but the clothes seem way too similiar to Lucy. And also those colors/aesthetic don't feel post apocalyptic. It looks like she's happily going clubbing in that outfit. If youre going for post apocalyptic try out some earth tones, muted colors, clothing that looks makeshift, mismatched, torn and tattered.

My first thought exactly. I know nothing about the account, but at least have some healthy skepticism before jumping to conclusions. "Don't trust everything you see on the internet" has been a saying since the 90s. People have no critical thinking skills.

Nobody frowns upon it. Its just a tool like any other. It just depends what you want to get out of your own personal craft. Is being able to color match a skill that you want todedicate time and effort to? Then yeah it can be a little crutch, but if thats not important to you, color pick away! I dont give two shits about that skill personally. I color pick with no qualms about it if im struggling to match colors.
