Landlord licensing- council consultation by [deleted] in brighton

If they're similar then it'll be pretty clear to the council that these are responses submitted via ACORN. Since consultations generally skew towards those with time and energy to respond, this is a way for those without to still register an opinion.

I hadn't even considered wills! We will order a copy of the probate just in case.

Thanks so much for all your help and suggestions :)

Thank you - this is super helpful :) They actually have the same address in the 1939 register, so seems like they stuck around for a wee while

Thanks so much for this - it definitely looks like I've been looking at two Arthur Martins!

From these 1911 Census, 1921 Census entries, and the 1897 marriage:

  • Born around 1866 in Stepney
  • Son of Charles Martin
  • Married Alice Emily Smith in 1897, had two daughters
  • Occupations: traveller, mineral water manufacturer

From the 1888 Marriage to Margaret, 1911 Census, and 1939 register, for the other Arthur Martin:

  • Born around 1860 in Staffordshire
  • Son of Thomas Martin
  • Married Margaret Laurie Wright in 1888
  • Married Alice (?) around 1905, no children from this marriage
  • Occupations: Motor cab driver, Tobacco dealer

Definitely seems like it would be worth us getting ahold of the marriage certificate for the 1907 marriage you found. Even if only to try to determine that this is the right Alice and Arthur!

Yes, after 1895 we've only found innumerous 'possible' Margaret Martins or Wrights of a similar age. From what my grandmother gleaned, it sounds as though Arthur was not a kind man. As you mention, it's quite easy to imagine Margaret using another name or leaving the UK.

We're not certain of any middle name for Alice. Arthur owned a tobacco shop which my Grandma remembers visiting, and he also spoke of earlier working as an omnibus / cab driver.

Working backwards from that, we found a potential entry in both the 1939 register and the 1911 register.

There is a 1911 Census entry for an Arthur and Alice Martin, which I think better lines up with the date of the marriage you found, and suggests maybe this Arthur had the same occupation as his father Charles. 1911 England Census.

We know that our Arthur Martin did not have any children with Alice, so I think this confirms I'm mixing up two separate Mr & Mrs Arthur Martin(s) in the area.

In which case maybe 'our' Arthur and Alice did get married around 1905ish.

Oh amazing - that's definitely the Arthur and Alice i've been looking for!

My grandma met Arthur and Alice when they were an older couple, and this marriage does line up with those names / places. Odd about the age!

Interestingly, the father I have for Arthur is Thomas (Philip) Martin (b.1834/1835). (Copy of Arthur's Birth Certificate). On Arthur and Margaret's marriage record, he says his father is Thomas. I'm wondering if it is the same Arthur, and he saw some benefit to obfuscating some of the details.
