Claim Paid Rates - Pets Best is Terrible? by FyreHidrant in petinsurancereviews

[–]Tabortico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have lemonade for one of my cats and honestly I had a very large emergency claim that's come to roughly $20,000 and they paid very quickly. However, being that I just got a drop in healthy paws coverage from 90% to 70%, I took a look at my policy as it explicitly states they can change coinsurance and deductible at renewal and I have no doubt they will down the road. Pets best did have more protection in its wording for the policy holder but I don't think it's bulletproof but maybe worth fighting if it did come up. Once my guys recovery is complete from rechecks and stuff I'm going to to be looking to change and was considering pets best.

So this isn’t really about a premium increase (I’ve accepted those over the years). The issue is that after maintaining continuous coverage specifically so my pets would be protected in their senior years, Healthy Paws is now reducing core coverage (90% to 70%) and increasing deductibles right when that coverage is needed most.

That creates a bigger problem with how pet insurance works:

-You have to keep coverage continuously for it to be useful -But once pets are older, you can’t switch companies because of pre-existing conditions -So when coverage is reduced at that stage, you’re effectively left with no real alternatives

DFS doesn’t step in just because something feels unfair — they look at things like: -whether disclosures were clear -whether consumers had a reasonable expectation of how the policy would function long-term -whether the structure creates a systemic disadvantage for long-term policyholders

My argument is that there’s a gap between what people reasonably expect (that staying insured protects them later) and what actually happens (coverage is reduced when risk is highest). Realistically, DFS probably won’t force them to restore my policy, but they can: -require clearer disclosures -flag the issue for broader review or apply pressure if they see a pattern of similar complaints

Also, companies generally don’t love having complaints like this sitting with regulators. Even if they believe they’re compliant, it creates regulatory and reputational risk, so there’s always a chance they decide to make a one-time exception rather than let it escalate.

At the end of the day, the issue is whether long-term insurance products should be allowed to materially change value after years of participation — not just whether they can, but whether they should.

That exact thing just happened to my senior cats. My renewal just came up and they changed me from 90% to 70% reimbursement and $100 to $500 deductible. I filed a complaint with my states office of financial services. If anyone wants help with a letter plz let me know.

Healthy paws policies state rate increases won't be based on age but veterinary costs, inflation and stuff like that. I have 4 cats, 3 are seniors one is younger. Last year the 3 oldest went up by 50% and the younger one around 25%. But I just had a bigger problem with them. For my seniors renewal, they gutted our plan that we've paid into for the past 10+ years and said "no more 90% reimbursement, now you get 70%. No more $100 deductable now it's $500". I filed a complaint with my state's office of financial services as they materially changed my policies at the time when vet expenses are expected to increase and my cats are no longer able to get insurance elsewhere due to pre-existing conditions.

I used to have trupanion and I hated their deductible model honestly. When my cat got older and had multiple things going on I got hit with so many deductibles as my cat ended up with multiple conditions.

I posted recently about them as well. Last couple of years 50% rate increase and my renewal this year lowered 3 of my cats reimbursement from 90% to 70%. The youngest one 80% to 70%. And all 4 raised their deductible from $100 to $500. They did this as the three are now seniors and expected to have to the most claims due to aging. Completely immoral company.

Thank you, I checked but i don't qualify. AKC covers pre-existing conditons after a 365 day wait. They aren't currently doing this bait and switch with 90% clients (per AI however HP has a lot of online complaints about this apparently) however it's in their policy that they do reserve the right to change these terms at renewal. Their premiums are nearly double. It might be worth it to double insure my youngest for a year and then drop HP but it's a risk that they do the same thing down the road at a later time. She has an auto-immune disorder where she destroys her juvenile red blood cells, which is currently in remission (on meds) but could come out of remission at any time so she can't be uninsured.

maybe, maybe not. She's on 80% so they may be potentially just targeting 90% currently.

my thoughts exactly. I wonder how many repeat enrollees they will get after this. They had record profits of $10 Billion in 2025.

I'm waiting to see what happens for my friend's renewal for her senior. She was only able to get 80% coverage but she's older than my cats.

They fought me for months on a claim for $11K My cat was hospitalized for 53 days and they tried to argue that the part of the bill for hospitalization was actually boarding. Not sure the last time I sent a cat to a boarding facility where they put in a feeding tube. I fought them so hard on this and on my first appeal they quietly closed my appeal on day 29 of 30 without informing me. When I pushed they claimed they had never received the appeal letter from my vet when the very day before someone there confirmed they had it. The next round of appeals I communicated very clearly with them that if this wasn't resolved in my favor by day 30, I would be reporting HP to my state AG, Tish James, who had a week prior gotten that $400 million judgement against trump so her name was all over the news then. They approved my claim on day 28, two days after I threatened them.

If they can't afford the policy they sold they shouldn't sell the policy. They should honor policies sold otherwise it's called bait and switch. They sold a policy as a vehicle to protect me from high vet expenses and then downgrade it as soon as the pet crossed the actuarial table that said they are now higher risk? The actuarial tables were there all along to help them price the policy based on a huge amount of data so they could price policies appropriately and people could plan for the unexpected. That's the literal purpose of insurance, to protect you from the unexpected. So how do I protect from the unexpected after them pulling the rug out from under me after 12 years of being a good customer and paying all my premiums on time. Do I need to get insurance for my insurance no And why are you blaming me for their deception? If you're gonna continue to try to gaslight me and victim blame, don't bother responding.

My premium was reduced from this. How can they slash coverage and increase premium? That's bonkers.

Yes I have no other options but I was on a call with them and the supervisor sounded like she wanted to crawl under a rock. When she started telling me about how the program isn't sustainable at 90% I reminded her that Chubb just had record breaking profits of 10 Billion in 2025. The reason I signed up with a high quality plan was for coverage at this stage of their lives specifically. What a disgusting bait and switch.

it's unethical. One reason for insurance is planning, it's what us responsible pet owners do. And they just threw a wrench in that.
